NQAPIA National Conference Request for Proposals: Conference Sessions and Arts/ Cultural Programming
THE DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED!  Submit your Proposal by December 31 for priority consideration!

The National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA) is pleased to announce its Request for Proposals (RFP) for workshops and cultural activities for the NQAPIA 2012 Conference which will be held July 17-22, 2012 in Washington, DC, at Crystal Gateway Marriott. The theme for the 2012 conference is "Presence, Power, Progress."

As human and social injustice issues become more complex and global, community empowerment calls for ever-growing capacity building and ongoing awareness of issues demoralizing our community and its values. Our strengths need to continually transcend our communities in order to significantly create influential visibility and achieve progress. The ongoing multifaceted issues facing our community present us opportunities to take leadership by bringing our dedication to societal balance and our collective efforts in addressing issues (i.e. homophobia, racial and ethnic prejudice, queer-oriented domestic and non-domestic violence, youth health and wellness, economic and human rights inequality, employment and immigration biasness, and many others).

As we address these issues and shape our communities and its leaders, this year’s conference committee looks forward to providing the opportunity for everyone to help promote individual and organizational team-building, break barriers and establish grounds for progress and (re)strengthen our movements as a unified community. This RFP will allow participants to help develop the conference programming from issue-based workshop sessions to arts and cultural performances and programming.

ABOUT NQAPIA AND CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES The National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance was formed as a federation of lesbian/ gay/ bisexual/ transgender/ queer (LGBTQ ) Asian American, South Asian, Southeast Asian and Pacific Islander (AAPI) organizations to build the organizational capacity of local LGBTQ AAPI groups, develop leadership, invigorate local organizing, and challenge homophobia and racism.

The conference seeks to network, organize, agitate, educate, and build capacity of the nation’s LGBTQ AAPI community, and are committed to principles of inclusion in every phase of conference planning, outreach, execution and evaluation.

ACTIVITIES/ PROGRAMMING There will be workshops, panel discussions, presentations, open forums, caucuses, speakers, and performance art. This Request for Proposals (RFP) for workshops and cultural activities is to maximize community involvement. We hope for a wide array of topics on politics, organizing, skills, arts and culture, health and wellness, and others. We hope for presenters to be balanced in terms of gender/gender- identity, geography, and ethnicity. Caucuses will provide attendees with opportunities to network. Some will be regional meetings based on geography, others peer-support based on identity, such as women, transgender, students/youth, bisexuals, South Asians, polyamorous, etc. Social and cultural activities are also planned to recharge ourselves, connect with each other and recognize our cultures.

There will be a NQAPIA General Membership Meeting to discuss next steps and organizational business. There will also be time to give feedback and evaluate the conference.

Funding and Support: Funding for the conference is particularly tight, but we are focused on making this space accessible, particularly for sectors of our community with limited resources. Your partnership and flexibility are greatly appreciated.
There will be no reduced conference fees for presenters (with our apologies) but all participants (speakers and performers), will be able to apply for scholarships for reduced registration fees. At this time there is no support for travel or hotel. In addition, A/V is a particularly expensive commodity at the conference venue, and we will have limited ability to provide this for presenters.

Submission: Please submit proposals by SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31 for priority consideration.  Proposals submitted after that date will be considered on a space-available basis. Decisions to be announced in January 2012. We recommend that you save a copy of the RFP so that you can fill out the form separately before entering it online.
