Rutgers Cooperative Extension and the City of Rahway are offering free rain gardens to Rahway homes that meet certain criteria (must be in Robinson's Branch Watershed).
You might be asking yourself, what is a rain garden!?
Rain gardens are specifically designed to manage stormwater runoff, mainly from rooftops, but also from driveways, lawns, roads, and parking lots. Rain gardens look like regular perennial gardens, but they are much more. During a storm, a rain garden fills with water, and the water slowly filters into the ground rather than running into storm sewers. Compared to a patch of lawn, a rain garden allows about 30% more water to soak into the ground.
Rain gardens are meant to be beautiful additions to your landscape, while at the same time performing important environmental functions: reducing flooding and pollution to the Robinson's Branch stream and Rahway River. Rutgers Cooperative Extension and the City of Rahway have limited grant funding to design and install rain gardens on properties in Rahway that meet certain criteria. If you are interested, Rutgers staff will meet with you at your home and assess your property to see if it is an appropriate site for a rain garden. The assessment will include determining rain garden location, size, suitability, environmental impact, and working with you to design an aesthetically pleasing rain garden for your home.
-Not all homes are appropriate for a rain garden. Rutgers staff will determine site suitability as well as make final decisions on which Rahway homes will get free rain gardens.
- Rain gardens will be installed between July and September of 2013. Rutgers will work with you to determine a convenient installation schedule.
- Rain garden installation will be dependent on the weather.
- Most rain gardens will be installed in the front yard of the property, not in the backyard.
Fill out the form below to sign up to be part of the Rahway Rain Garden Project. If your property qualifies, we will schedule a mutually convenient time to visit your property and determine if it is a suitable location for a rain garden.
