2012 Conference Theme: Changing the Game: Expanding Discourses in Research The BSN and Institute for Urban and Minority Education (IUME) at Teachers College, Columbia University invite proposals for sessions that will present community-based work with youth or adults, effective teaching ideas, empirical and theoretical research, and/or an analysis of various topics in education (including, but not limited to, teaching and learning, urban youth studies, higher education, and social justice initiatives) surrounding the theme of this year's conference: "Changing the Game" Presentation Formats Panel: A panel/symposium is designed to explore a specific topic through lively and active discussion. This type of session may showcase a panel discussion among participants and discussants. Panel/symposium sessions are 50 minutes in length and should include a chair or discussant. [Groups of researchers, teachers or students with school-based or research projects who would like to discuss the work they are doing are encouraged to choose this option] Roundtable Discussion: Roundtables are 50-minute oral presentations and discussion with attendees seated around a table. Roundtables typically include 20 minutes of presentation, followed by 30 minutes of discussion and feedback. Roundtable presenters should bring targeted questions to pose to others at the table in order to learn from and with those attending. [Community organizations, teachers, and researchers are encouraged to choose this option] General Paper Presentation: General presentations may be submitted individually or in group format. Submitted presentation proposals will be grouped with two (2) other presenters on a common theme and each presenter will be allocated 15 minutes as part of a 60-minute session. Presentation proposals submitted with multiple presenters may be allotted 25 minutes as part of a 60 minute session. [Faculty, teachers, and graduate students interested in presenting their completed or in-progress research should choose this option] Professional Development / Workshop: Professional development sessions and workshops precede and follow the core sessions of the conference and focus on helping attendees to learn or refine their ideas and skills related to the 2012 conference theme. Each professional development session or workshop is 50 minutes in length and should provide an opportunity for all conference attendees (especially parents and community members) to learn about various practices and discuss their ideas in large or small group format.
