Hand Up Student Advisory Board Application

This nationally recognized leadership development and service learning program brings together 40 high school students from across San Diego to develop leadership skills and tackle the issue of hunger in our community. We are currently accepting applications from exceptional student leaders for the Hand Up Student Advisory Board. Twenty new leaders will be invited to join our advisory board for the 2012-2013 school year. Applications for the 2012-2013 Hand Up Student Advisory Board are due Thursday, June 8, 2012. About Hand Up Youth Food Pantry

The Hand Up Youth Food Pantry provides supplemental food to military families, the homeless, older adults, pregnant and parenting teens, and low income families at 9 locations across 40 miles of San Diego County. In the last year, the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry provided more than 104 tons of food to over 9000 people. Hand Up teen leaders tackle the issue of hunger by coordinating food drives and fundraisers, managing volunteers at Hand Up food distribution sites and in our food pantry, and engaging in hunger advocacy. In the last year Hand Up teens volunteered for more than 1800 hours, coordinated 35 food drives, secured 9,000+ pounds of donated food, and raised more than $3,500 to support Hand Up Youth Food Pantry.

Application Process

1. Please complete and submit this applicaiton online by June 8 2. Make sure to have reference form submitted by June 8 3. Applications and reference forms will be scored. Top scoring applicants will be notified on July 16th, and invited to a Prospective Member Open House on August 10 4. At the Open House, second round applicants will have a chance to learn more about the Hand Up Teen Leadership Program, meet returning Hand Up teen leaders, and participate in a brief one-on-one interview 5. Following the Open House, Hand Up staff and Executive Committee leaders will meet to make final decisions about the 2012-13 Advisory Board 6. New Advisory Board leaders will be notified on September 4

Hand Up Student Advisory Board Requirements

1. Attend a 2-day teen leadership retreat on September 30 and October 14 2. Attend Student Advisory Board meetings on one Sunday per month between October and May 3. Volunteer at two Hand Up military food distributions during the school year (lifting is required) 4. Volunteer two times in the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry during the school year (lifting is required) 5. Coordinate one food drive –OR– coordinate one fundraiser during the school year 6. Must have reliable transportation for leadership retreat, monthly meetings, and service projects 7. Meet with assigned Student Executive Committee Leadership Mentor (in person or over the phone) each month 8. Promote Hand Up volunteer opportunities on your high school campus and support Hand Up Club at your school 9. Assist in event planning and promotion of Rock Out for Hunger fundraising event 10. Participate in advocacy work to alleviate hunger in San Diego County and attend Hunger Action Day in Sacramento, if interested 11. Attend Year-end Awards Ceremony and Celebration in June

The Hand Up Youth Food Pantry Teen Leadership Program is nationally recognized for innovative teen programming. Our teens have recieved the following recognition for their community service: -Certificates of recognition from State Legislators and members of the US House of Representatives -President’s Gold Volunteer Service Award -California Hunger Fighter Award -Sodexo Youth Grant Award -STOP Hunger Scholarship The Hand Up Youth Food Pantry also provides service-based awards, including Emerging Leader, Senior Service, and Excellence in Leadership awards. Leaders may receive letter of recommendation (per teen’s request) for college and other program applications.

Program Fee

There is a $300 program fee for the Hand Up Student Advisory Board. This fee covers program expenses, including: Program supplies for the 2-day Teen Leadership Retreat and monthly Student Advisory Board meetings; Food and drinks for all program events; T-shirts; Student Advisory Board Handbooks; and Staff Time. Financial assistance is available for anyone in need. A financial aid form will be provided to all students selected for the Student Advisory Board in September.
