Nicotine Research Lab: Fenofibrate Study

This research study investigates the short-term effects of a lipid lowering oral medication, fenofibrate, on smoking behavior, craving for cigarettes, and mood. We are looking for smokers who are already interested in quitting. Although this study is examining the effects of fenofibrate, this is not a treatment trial. However, everyone who completes the study will have the option of free Zyban (Bupropion) medication and brief counseling to help them quit permanently. Zyban is an FDA approved medication to help smokers quit smoking. You would not be required to return for these visits if you decide after the end of the study that you wanted to quit on your own. The research study is composed of 2 study phases that are each 2 weeks long, for a total study length of 4 weeks. Each phase would require that you come in for 2 days during the first week and then every day, Monday through Friday, during the second week. Most visits will take about 10-15 minutes, with one visit each phase lasting about 45 minutes. Please note that sessions are only scheduled between 11AM and 4 PM, Monday through Friday. During each phase, you would also be asked to try as hard as you can to quit smoking for 4 days. Study medication that may or may not contain fenofibrate would be provided for you to use on a daily basis during the study. There would also be an introductory session as well as a mandatory physical examination that includes blood tests to check liver and kidney function. Compensation will be provided for each visit and an extra $160 can be earned for completing the entire 4-week study. We want to emphasize that this study is only for smokers who are already interested in quitting. Please fill out the following questions to determine your eligibility for this smoking study.
