Survey of Latin American and Caribbean Art and Visual Culture in Canada

The aim of the proposed research is twofold. It seeks to explore the place that Latin American and Caribbean art and visual culture occupy in the research and teaching agendas of researchers working in the Social Sciences and the Humanities in Canadian institutions and to delve into the Canadian general public’s knowledge of Latin American and Caribbean art and visual culture. The research will be performed through an online survey.

You are invited to participate in this study either as a researcher or as part of the general public.  The purpose of this letter is to provide you with information to help you make an informed decision regarding participation in this research.

<ul><li>The purpose of this study is to start mapping out the different ways in which art and visual culture from Latin America and the Caribbean is featured in Canada. It aims to provide insights into the wide array of audiences for these works and into the challenges facing those who study or wish to access to them. </li>
<li>It also seeks to explore strategies to better support the work scholars do in this field across Canada.</li>
<li>Individuals who are involved in researching, teaching and promoting Latin American and Caribbean art and visual culture in Canada (universities, museums, embassies, movie industry, printing press, etc.) are invited to answer the scholarly audience survey. </li>
<li>Anyone 18 or older and residing in Canada is invited to answer the general public survey.</li>
<li>Since the goal of the study is to map trends in Canada, <b>individuals who are not residing in Canada are not eligible to participate in this study.</b></li>
<li>If you agree to participate, you will be asked to answer 12 or 18 questions, depending which survey you answer. It is anticipated that the entire task will take 20 minutes in total. As a participant you do not need to provide your name on the survey. The only personal information required (gender, age, etc.) will be used for statistical purposes. </li>
<li>There are no known or anticipated risks or discomforts associated with participating in this study. </li>
<li>There is no direct benefit for the participants, nor compensation. However, one indirect benefit will be a publication of the results in an article. This will provide possible opportunities to organize events and to promote networking, partnerships, and knowledge mobilization among the wider population.</li>
<li>You will not be compensated for your participation in this research.</li>
<li>Participation in this study is voluntary. You may refuse to participate, refuse to answer any questions or withdraw from the study at any time.</li>
<li>All data collected will remain confidential and accessible only to the investigators of this study. When the results are published, your name will not be used. </li></ul>

A co-authored article analyzing the results of the survey will be published in a Canadian open access scholarly journal. The survey will be mentioned as source material. Your name will not be used. The survey will also be mentioned at events or public presentations that may follow. The data will be processed during the winter 2013. The first manuscript of the article will be ready for review by June 2013.
