Democrats Speak Out on Voting Rights
Mr. President and Honorable Leaders of our Party -
On June 25th, the conservative wing of the United States Supreme Court struck down Section IV of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The provisions of Section IV were necessary to empower Section V and prevent states and municipalities from restricting the rights of Americans to make their voices heard in our democracy.
As you know, the Young Democrats of America is our Party's oldest youth organization. As it's leaders, we the undersigned, ask you to take the necessary steps to ensure Congress quickly passes new legislation that returns the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to full force.
Any new legislation will need to include provisions that prevent discriminatory voting practices or redistricting to suppress voters based on: race, sex, geographic location, disability or socio-economic status.
While the legislative process takes place, we call on you to work with state and local Parties and affiliated caucuses to ensure that the voice of every American is heard. It will be necessary to fight discriminatory legislation in state legislatures as well as provide greater resources for outreach to register and educate voters while maintaining a strong GOTV effort for supporters.
We look forward to your assistance and leadership on this issues.
Sincerely,
