Purpose
The Undergraduate Research Assistantship Support (URAS) program, administered by the Office of Research Administration, provides funding for faculty members to support an undergraduate research assistant. The goals of the program are to support faculty research (including scholarly and creative activities) and to provide undergraduates with a rewarding research experience early in their academic careers.
Eligibility
All UMBC tenure-track faculty members (Assistant, Associate, Full) and UMBC research faculty are eligible for URAS. Faculty may submit only one URAS proposal for the academic year.
Funding Period
Fall 2013 and Spring 2014
Amount
The maximum URAS award is $750 per semester. Faculty may apply for funding for up to two consecutive semesters.
Funding Conditions
Funds may be used solely to support undergraduate research assistants in their first four semesters at UMBC. Only one student may be supported by a URAS award at a time. Students must be paid on an hourly basis. Short final reports from the faculty awardee and the student will be required at the end of each semester.
Review Process
The Office of Research Administration will review proposals and make awards. Awards will be contingent on faculty identifying and hiring a qualified undergraduate research assistant.
Evaluation Criteria
Proposals will be evaluated based on the following:
➤ Degree to which the proposed activity will advance the faculty member's research, including scholarly and creative activity;
➤ Level of educational opportunity for the student; and
➤ Amount of training that will be provided to the student by the faculty member.
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted online by Friday, September 20, 2013, 11:59pm. Award notifications will be sent out by Friday, September 27, 2013. Faculty receiving an award must identify an eligible student and forward a copy of a URAS Offer & Acceptance Letter signed by the student to donengel@umbc.edu before any URAS funds are used.
