13S Foreign Language Conversation Partner Application

This application will be filed in the Tutor Clearinghouse's database, along with your professor recommendation. If you meet our requirements, we will notify you when we find someone who needs a conversation partner (CP) in the language(s) for which you filed an application. Please file a new application each term for our records. Further information: • CPs must be fluent on a near-native level and must have a language professor fill out a professor recommendation form to verify that they are fluent enough to be a CP. (Form found in separate link.) • Payment Information: Time sheets must be submitted in a timely manner during the appropriate payroll period. Time sheets not submitted in accordance with the protocol on the website will become problematic and may be delayed in processing.

*Proficient: Student has a high level of skill in the language and can speak/read/write without difficulty. Student can communicate effectively in the written and spoken language, and can read and comprehend without major difficulty. Student is proficient but can still be identified as a foreign speaker. *Near-native: Student is a fluent conversationalist, has the vocabulary of a native speaker, and can read and write at the same level as a native speaker, but is not a native speaker of the language. *Native: Student is from a country in which the language is spoken and/or speaks the language at home.

Conversation Partner Hiring Agreement

All CPs are expected to accommodate up to two hours per week of conversation per tutee assigned. The rate of pay will be $8 / hour. It is the expectation of the Tutor Clearinghouse that you will: • By virtue of signing this agreement, acknowledge the importance of the confidential relationship into which you have entered. * [For those who will be paid by the College:] Complete a timesheet every two weeks and turn it in on time so that my earned wages are paid in a manner consistent with New Hampshire state law. * I understand that I am responsible for accurately recording all time provided to tutoring each tutee on a timesheet if I am being paid by Dartmouth College. I am aware that any fraudulent claims of time worked will be investigated and may be result in termination, referral to the Office of Undergraduate Judicial Affairs as a violation of the Dartmouth Community Standards of Conduct, or both. • Clearly communicate with the Tutor Clearinghouse Coordinator of any concerns that you may have regarding the match (i.e. conflicting schedules, inappropriate match due to differences in learning or teaching styles, etc.) • Notify the Tutor Clearinghouse (either by blitz or in person) of any changes in your availability within 7 days of receiving notification of the match or two weeks following a session that results in no follow-up. This will include advising us of tutees who do not appear to need the services. • Notify the Tutor Clearinghouse immediately when you have experienced a change in your schedule which will adversely affect your CP responsibilities. Changes to your CP arrangement can be made only by the Clearinghouse staff. • Be responsive to the needs of your tutee by scheduling sessions promptly and arriving on time and prepared to work. • Clearly communicate with your tutee about your availability and resolve any differences immediately. • Uphold your agreement to provide services throughout the term. By signing below, you also acknowledge that UNLESS OTHERWISE STIPULATED BY THE TUTOR CLEARINGHOUSE COORDINATOR, all work is to be done on a 1:1 basis. Students and the College pay for this work with the understanding that students will receive 1:1 attention. I have read and understood the responsibilities and expectations of this position and accept employment as a conversation partner through the Tutor Clearinghouse at a rate of $8 per hour (or, if I checked the "volunteer" box above, without pay). I understand that this job requires a time commitment of up to two hours per week per tutee and that any hours in excess of the two hours will be compensated by the tutee or considered as community service hours.
