PROGRAM OVERVIEW: Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a "refundable" tax credit that essentially works by reducing tax burdens and supplementing wages for low-income working families. It was established in 1975 and its success has led to over 18 states enacting the program. Individuals and working families with children who have earned incomes below $50,000[ (depending on marital status and the number of qualifying children) are generally eligible for this credit. Last year, Bryn Mawr College VITA student volunteers helped to stimulate Norristown’s economy by generating more than $1 million in tax refunds for Norristown residents. The EITC program has been found to produce substantial increases in employment and reductions in welfare receipt among single parents, as well as large decreases in poverty. Research indicates that eligible families will use the EITC to heat their homes. In addition, they will pay for necessities, to repair homes and vehicles that are needed to commute to work, and in some cases, to help boost their employability and earning power by obtaining additional education or training. VOLUNTEER RESPONSIBILITIES: Volunteers will first undergo basic training about the VITA program and take field trips to learn about the culture and history of Norristown. During winter break, you will complete an internet based tax law training program. This interactive computer based program, Link&Learn,* allows you to work at your own pace, complete necessary modules, and receive your tax law certification, online. Online training must be completed prior to January 20th. At the beginning of Spring semester, there will be a mandatory classroom training held on the Bryn Mawr College Campus, focusing on applying your tax law knowledge to the software program, Tax Wise. After completing all trainings and becoming certified by the IRS, volunteers will travel once per week to the Community Action Development Coalition of Montgomery County (CADCOM) in Norristown. Volunteers will provide tax preparation assistance once a week for the entire duration of the tax season, beginning after the January training until April 15, 2013. Transportation will be either by BMC van or via the R100/Norristown High-Speed Rail. Travel related expenses to and from volunteer sites will be covered by the CEO. QUALIFICATIONS: Have a willingness to complete Link&Learn and an additional training session. Have good interpersonal skills with a desire to work in the community Have good organization and time management skills Be responsible and dependable Spanish speakers are especially encouraged to apply, due to the high percentage of Spanish speaking individuals in the Norristown Area.
