The History of Keyboard Movement Controls

A recent question on Reddit asked how and why the WASD control configuration became dominant for moving the main character (http://www.reddit.com/ocguo). WASD refers to the keys commonly used to govern a player character's movement either up-left-down-right or forward-left-backward-right (depending on perspective). Since there's very little solid material on the subject, I thought it would be interesting to at least catalogue the use of WADS and WADS-like control systems in games.
