ORIENTATION PEER ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION New Student and Family Programs Brief Position Description: The New Student and Family Programs employs undergraduate students who are committed to assisting new and transfer students with their transition to Minnesota State University, Mankato. Orientation reinforces the University’s mission to educate students for a global community by facilitating both personal and academic successes of new students at MSU, Mankato. The Orientation staff members serve as positive role models and mentors, discussion leaders, tour guides, and educators. The Orientation Peer Assistants are a key component for a successful transition to college for students new to MSU, Mankato. Supervisors: Graduate Assistant and Assistant Director for Orientation Programs

Orientation Peer Assistant (OPA) Application

Resume Requirement

Please complete a resume for your Orientation Peer Assistant Application that includes any work experience (paid or volunteer), leadership experience, campus involvements, and any other information you feel is relevant to this position. You are highly encouraged to have your resume reviewed at the Career Development Center before turning in your completed application. Your resume must include your full name, Tech ID, address, and contact information. Application Question Requirement

All applications must complete the following questions for the Orientation Peer Assistant Application. This document should be typed, double-spaced, and no more than three pages in length. •Why are you interested in the Orientation Peer Assistant (OPA) position? •What contributions and skills do you possess and how would you utilize them as an OPA? •What has been your most significant experience (positive or negative) as a student at Minnesota State Mankato? What did you learn from this experience? •What are three of the biggest challenges facing first year students? How would you assist first year students to overcome these challenges? Reference Form Requirement

Three reference forms must be submitted by the application due date. Of these three forms, at least one reference form must be from a faculty member, professor, or (non-student) staff member at MSU Mankato. Please do not use relatives, family friends, or friends as references. Applicants must first fill out the box in the right hand corner of the form before giving to his/her reference(s). It is the applicant’s responsibility to make sure all three reference forms are submitted by the application deadline. It is preferred that your reference return the form directly to New Student and Family Programs as indicated on the Reference Form. Interview Availability Form

Students must complete an Interview Availability form to complete their application. On this form indicate all the times that you are available for a 30 minute interview during the provided dates. If offered an interview, this form will be used to schedule your interview so please be as accurate as possible. If you availability changes between the time that you submit your application and February 5, 2013 please turn in another availability form to reflect the changes. Orientation Peer Assistant Applicant Agreement

Please read the following statements. *I have read the “OPA Job Description” and I agree to perform these duties if I am appointed to the position. I understand that this appointment is for one term (April 2013-April 2014) and that I must perform my duties in a satisfactory manner or my appointment may be terminated, and that future reappointment is subject to reapplication. * I am aware that I am required to be available for all program sessions and times. Summer Orientation programs do not offer flexibility and it is recommended that I do not seek outside employment or take a class during this time. * I understand that by checking the box below, I grant permission to release my University Grade Point Average to the New Student and Family Programs, Assistant Director for Orientation and Transitions Programs, for the purpose of verifying my cumulative Grade Point Average. * I understand that by checking the box below, I grant permission to release my University Judicial Record History to the Office of New Student and Family Programs, Assistant Director for Orientation and Transitions Programs for the purpose of verifying my current judicial standing. * I understand that by checking the box below, I grant permission to release my MSU Employment History to the Office of New Student and Family Programs, Assistant Director for Orientation and Transitions Programs for the purpose of verifying my current employment standing. *I understand that turning in an application does not guarantee an interview for the position of Orientation Peer Assistant. * I understand that by checking the box below, I verify that all of the information I have provided in this application is truthful.
