Survey - SCUBA Diver/Snorkeler Perceptions of Reefs in the Florida Keys

Georgia Aquarium, in partnership with Georgia State University’s Department of Economics at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, is conducting a survey about scuba divers’ and snorkelers’ perceptions of reefs in the Florida Keys. We would appreciate it if you would please take a few minutes to share your thoughts by filling out the survey.

Georgia State University Department of Economics Georgia Aquarium Informed Consent Title: SCUBA Divers’ and Snorkelers’ Perceptions of Reefs in the Florida Keys Principal Investigator: Brett Howell (Georgia Aquarium) and Kurt Schnier (Georgia State University) I. Purpose: You are invited to participate in a research study. The purpose of the study is to identify visitor awareness of and participation in existing reef conservation programs. You are invited to participate because you have recently taken a dive trip in the Florida Keys. A total of 1000 participants will be recruited for this study. Participation will require approximately 30 minutes of your time. II. Procedures: If you decide to participate, you will be asked to conduct an electronic survey to facilitate our identification of dive site quality and divers’ preferences within the Florida Keys. The survey will consist of a series of short questions and will require no more than 30 minutes of your time. III. Risks: In this study, you will not have any more risks than you would in a normal day of life. IV. Benefits: Participation in this study may not benefit you personally. Overall, we hope to gain information about divers’ and snorkelers’ preferences within the Florida Keys. V. Voluntary Participation and Withdrawal: Participation in research is voluntary. You do not have to be in this study. If you decide to be in the study and change your mind, you have the right to drop out at any time. You may skip questions or stop participating at any time. Whatever you decide, you will not lose any benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. VI. Confidentiality: We will keep your records private to the extent allowed by law. Professor Kurt Schnier and Researcher Brett Howell will have access to the information you provide. Information may also be shared with those who make sure the study is done correctly (GSU Institutional Review Board, the Office for Human Research Protection (OHRP)). We will use a study number rather than your name on study records. The information you provide will be stored on a password protected computer. Your name and other facts that might point to you will not appear when we present this study or publish its results. The findings will be summarized and reported in group form.
