Heritage Christian Online School is hosting a three day Rocketry Learning Camp, taught by Todd Farion, with the goal of introducing students to the basic concepts of rocketry. There will be two instructional days, with the third scheduled as our "launching" day. This class is for fathers and daughters or is a girls only class. Fathers wanting to build their own rockets also need to register as a participant. What a great date with your daughter!
Camp Description and Topics Covered:
Each student will receive two rocket kits, one kit will be a basic introductory kit to be used in a race. (streamer recovery) The object of the race is to design a streamer (nylon strip) that keeps your rocket in the air longer than any other competing rocket. Achieving a winning design is a fine balancing act between the length of the steamer and the weight of the rocket.
The second kit will be a very exciting skill level 2 rocket that includes multi-stages and a payload section. Not only will you see the first stage fall away and a second stage ignite taking your rocket higher but you can be launching your favourite action hero toy or, maybe… a bug (we launched a Lego guy).
All materials such as glues, paint, engines, igniters and wadding are included.
All launch pads and launch control gear will be provided. A complete display is set up in the class illustrating to the students different styles of Rockets, launch controllers and launch pads.
The classes will be 2.5 hours in length; the launch day could be 2 to 2.5 hours depending on the number of students.
The first class will include the history of rocketry, an introduction to thrust, propellants used by rockets and some super cool videos of model rockets launching skyward. The class will then build their introductory rocket and be introduced to the rules of the contest. The winning student will receive a complete rocketry starter kit. (Rocket and launch pad)
The second class will be consumed by rocket construction and rocket launching safety practices.
The third class will be the big launch!!
Each student will launch their basic kit once in a bid for the big prize.
Each student will then launch their level two rocket once for the pure fun of it.
The instructor, Rocket Commander Todd, will break out the big guns and launch two medium powered rockets one of which is 12 feet in height. (Wow!!) Medium power rockets launch with composite engines (quite different than the smaller black powder based motors) adding a thunderous roar, coloured flame and billowing smoke as the rocket lifts skyward. The students will watch in awe as these rockets lift from their pads and they will gain a real understanding of just how far they can go with the sport of rocketry.
Students will be allowed to purchase additional engines at a nominal cost (a price sheet will be provided) for additional launches and be allowed to launch again.
Each student will receive a certificate of completion signifying that they have achieved level 2 rocketry and that they understand existing rocketry safety practices.
