9HClear1D11102n11000Boley is playing the right gap but needs to shed this block

.

9HClear2D111013n0000

.

9HClear3D121013n500A good job recognizing screen by Boley, forcing the back to hesitate and cut it back inside. A little too long for Herzlich but doesn’t hurt us.

.

9HClear6D121921n-510Another fast screen recognition from Boley blow this play up. After that its all about pursuit.

9HClear8D111022n4000

.

9HClear9D12526n501Outside zone read from the line and Herzlich flows with good tempo and does not over run the cutback.

9HClear11D111035n200

.

9HClear12D121137n500This is an attampt at a TE screen that Boley blows up again. In the case, we are in 2 Man and Boley is man on the TE however, so he should be there.

.

9HClear13D13642n000

.

9HClear14D111042n17-1-10Redman's first big run of the day. Fullback has an Iso block on Herzlich. Herzlich has no help on the outside and needs to take this block on with his inside should, forcing the runner to Boley. If he had done this correctly, Boley would not have been there regardless because he comes too far upfield. On run away he needs to stack behind the defensive tackle and be ready to make a play in either direction. By running downhill here, he gives himself no chance. Good hustle by Kiwi.

.

9HClear21D211018o7000This is a variation of a standard counter play where the guard is kicking out and a fullback will replaces the tackle pulling up into the hole. You can tell both Boley and Herzlich are reading the correct keys based on how quickly they react, but our alignment kills us here. I am going to assume it was correct, just a good call by the offense.

.

9HClear22D22311o500Again, Herzlich playing outside of the box and with only 2 defenders (tackle and defensive end) playing on the weakside, the steelers can bring an extra blocker, in this case the pulling guard, around to the play side. Boley is left having to play 2 gaps. Again we get beat schematically, not physically.

.

9HClear23D2166o20-1Good aggressive fill by Herzlich, but he has to make this play. Should be a TFL.

.

9HClear24D2244o40-10Just flat out beat.

.

9HClear25D211048o000

.

9HClear26D221048o1100We are in a Cover 3 shell which means this gap is the responsibility of the screw down safety (Brown) who gets caught inside.

.

9HClear27D211037o500

.

9HClear28D22532o-620Scooping one up for six will get you the +2 10 times out of 10

.

9HClear29D211031n12-10I want to address this again because it has now happened twice. Boley gets the -1 here because he gets caught looking in the backfield and takes too many steps outside before redirecting. He should be watching the guard who would have led him directly to the play. This is the second time I have seen Herzlich take on a block in the hole with his inside shoulder with no help to the outside. This is fine if that is how we teach it, but then it is even more imperative that Boley is flowing quickly over the top of Herzlich to make the play. Regardless, Boley's read is too slow.

.

9HClear30D211043n310

.

9HClear31D22746n400

.

9HClear32D23350m210Nice reaction by Boley and a strong tackle to prevent Redman from getting to the sticks.

.

9HClear33D24148o400

.

9HClear34D211044o300No harm done but would be better if Herzlich took on the pulling guard rather than fitting outside the end. It is tough given his alignment, but when he does not attack the guard, it leaves him free to find another body and Herzlich essentially takes himself out of the play.

.

9HClear35D22741o000If Boley takes a peek back at the receiver here he may be able to get into this window. Instead he gets drawn inside a little trying to read Roethlisberger's eyes.

.

9HClear36D23741o-1200

.

9HClear37D211041o2400Herzlich isnt in a bad position here running to the hole in the Tampa 2. A better throw and he can make a play.

.

9HClear38D211035o23-10Tough route when the quarterback has the time to wait for the double move, but it is Boley's man coverage responsibility

.

9HClear39D211012o000

.

9HClear40D311035o3100This is the guard wrap play again. We got caught last time when Boley shuffled outside instead of over the top. This is textbook how you play this. Boley is downhill and Herzlich, reacting the the guard's pull, shuffles and stacks behind the defensive tackle allowing him to break either way and play 2 gaps - the extra gap the pulling guard creates to the play side, and any cutback attempt by the back.

9HClear42D33732o-400

.

9HClear43D31106n600Not sure Heath Miller was really looking to block he here or get to the next level, but a good tackle by Herzlich

.

9HClear44D32412n5200Love this play by Boley. When you see a guard pull away and you can find a window to run through, you can forget about scraping over the top and stacking. Take it and make the TFL.

.

9HClear48D311044n2010Herzlich has had the opportunity to make a couple plays and missed out, but has been very good with his reads thus far. Sees the tackle pull outside here and is able to fit outside of him, forcing the play back to the rest of the defense in the middle of the field.

.

9HClear49D42846n3000

.

9HClear50D43549n51000Real basic read here by Ben. Sees pressure coming off the edge, the slant is the hot read, and he simply throws into the blitz. Decent pursuit by Kiwi, don't love how Boley slows up, but Mike Wallace can flat out fly.

9HClear55D42647o1400Hosley has to get to the flat here

.

9HClear56D411033o40-1Herzlich has done a nice job with his reads all day, but no reason he should be stepping inside here. Down block by the center should indicate he is getting a full back or a pulling guard right at him with a ball carrier following behind. He should be agressively filling off the center's ass here, or at the very least his first step should be to the outside.

9HClear59D42714o000

.

9HClear60D43714o500Herzlich can't try to go under this block unless he thinks he can make the play. In this case, he cant.

.

9HClear61D4329o800My interpretation of what we have here…both Herzlich and Boley fill the correct gaps here. We have Rolle coming off the edge and the D End playing the D gap, which means Rolle is expected to be the C gap player from his edge blitz. If this is the case, he needs to be flatter. Backers are fine.
