JHHey guys and gal(s),

I purchased my girlfriend the Galaxy Note 2, and she is loving it (I will be manually replacing the glass this weekend due to a single drop, but anyway).

The question I have is this, what do I do with the MicroSD card I put in it? It seems like there is no way to use it for apps, and photo storage without rooting the device. The paltry 8GB's internal storage gets used up fast, especially with things like photo burst mode, etc.

If it was mine, no big deal (I am stuck with an iPhone currently), but this being her device...

Choice used to be the hallmark of Android, but that seems to be going away since 4.0 from what I am reading.

Would like to hear the thoughts of the crew.

Thank you,
Dre
Reason: Starting with ICS, Android no longer supports moving apps to SD.

Solution for apps: Root and move apps to SD manually

Solution for photos:
- Install an app like Astro File Manager and move photos to SD through there.
- Install a cloud sharing app like Dropbox or Google Drive and copy them there to move them off, or into the cloud to free up space on your internal storage.
- Turn on Instant Upload in G+ app to have all your pics upload to your G+ account automatically. Then you can download the album from the G+ site whenever you like.

OR: Connect your Android tablet to a Windows machine.
Windows will show you TWO storage devices - the internal memory of the device and the SD card.

RRHave a question for you. I am starting a job that we are not allowed to have our cell phones out while working(it is an amusement park & is very hard to hide your phone from view). I'm a supervisor & need to be able to know the time & they did not say that "smart watches" are not allowed, so are there any out already & if so, what is the best for basic text & voicemail access. Also, do I need to make sure that it is compatable with my device, the Samsung Galaxy Note (T-Mobile version).

Thanks,

Terrance Ghares
All About Android Team,

I have had a Sony Smartwatch for about 5 months and it is great. I receive the notifications I want including tweets, text messages, the person who is calling and I can configure more if I want. There are updates to the watch on a regular basis from Sony and there are apps for social networks, GPS, email and more. I think that you may want to take another look at the Sony Smartwatch. It is not merely a rumour, it is actual tech that can be used today.

I love the show and I always learn a lot. Thanks for the great work.

Best regards,

David S. Hale

[1] A two year long EU anti-trust investigation into Google's search practices is being pressured to include Android in the complaint, with companies like Microsoft and Nokia voicing concerns accusing Google of using Android as a trojan horse for Google apps, such as Maps, email and video services. FairSearch lawyer Thomas Vinje said in a statement that Android "deceives partners, monopolizes the mobile marketplace, and controls consumer data" in unfair ways. Keep in mind that the Federal Trade Commission in the states ended an investigation in January without any action against the Goog. This was seen as a major victory for Google. Is it harmful for Google to present a free OS? Does it matter that it's becoming increasingly popular? How does this compare to the Microsoft anti-trust kerfuffle that dragged on forever and ever? (The lobbying group FairSearch also includes Oracle, Expedia and TripAdvisor among others.)
[2] TNT notes: "FairSearch, antitrust complaint against Google in EU over Android - European Union Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said Android complaints independent of desktop search complaints (November 2010) - FairSearch lawyer Thomas Vinje: ""Google is using its Android mobile operating system as a 'Trojan Horse' to deceive partners, monopolize the mobile marketplace, and control consumer data,"" - ""Android phone makers who want to include must-have Google apps such as Maps, YouTube or Play are required to pre-load an entire suite of Google mobile services and to give them prominent default placement on the phone, the complaint says."" - Calls Android being free ""predatory pricing"" - US FTC ended their investigation in January FairSearch members, Microsoft, Nokia, Oracle, Expedia, TripAdvisor, Twenga Foundem and adMarketplace.
[3] * You can use Facebook without using Facebook Home * Facebook Home is just another app you install from Google Play. You can uninstall it at any time. * Facebook Home collects your Facebook activity, location, Facebook messages, and the apps in your Home app launcher. This data is user-identifiable for 90 days. * Facebook can not collect any data outside of the Home app, unless you use the HTC First -- then it can track what apps generate notifications, but not the content of the notification.
[4] AT&T's 4G LTE Launching on April 12th for $99.99 4.3-inch 720p display 1.4 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor 16GB of storage 1GB of memory. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Home can be disabled, allowing for a stock JB experience
[5] Total rumorville: Nexus 7 refresh releasing in July powered by Snapdragon, this from two sources to Reuters. In tow will be a higher res display, and thinner bezel. Google could sell once again for $199, or $149 to undercut the competition further.
[6] SamMobile: * the Galaxy Mega 5.8 device * set for release some time in Q2-Q3 * 5.8″ (960×540) qHD TFT display * a dual-core Exynos processor clocked at 1.4GHz * 1.5GB of RAM * 8MP back-facing camera * 2MP front-facing shooter * 2,600mAh battery * Jellybean
[7] Samsung has announced that the WiFi-only 16GB Galaxy Note 8.0 will officially hit U.S. store shelves on April 11 complete with a $399 price tag. 8-inch, 1280×800 display
[8] We got tired of seeing OEMs include many GB of internal storage for music, while users were still running out of space for apps and data. This approach lets us merge everything on one volume, which is way better. -- Dan Morrill, Android engineer at Google
[9] App deletions hit a record high in February, with 60,000 apps removed during the course of the month – the largest round of app deletions to date. Google won't comment about mobile app removals, but their automated system continues to evolve. Spam apps violate the TOS and as such are targets for automated removal.
[10] Released just 5 days ago and removed App description: Hazard Rush is half Snake, half Geometry Wars, and half Temple Run (maybe that last one is just SEO). TOS: "Product descriptions should not be misleading or loaded with keywords in an attempt to manipulate ranking or relevancy in the Store’s search results."
[11] New in this release of Twitter for Android: - We’ve got a brand new look and feel crafted for Android 4.0+. Navigate seamlessly between your favorite parts of Twitter with a simple swipe. - It’s easier to connect with friends and join conversations with @username and #hashtag suggestions that appear as you search or compose a Tweet - Discover, install and launch your favorite apps from Tweets - Other bug fixes and improvements
[12] When the application launched almost exactly 1 year ago on April 3rd 2012, over a million users downloaded it to their devices in the first 24 hours.
[13] All About Android Team, In episode 102 you were talking about Smartwatches from Apple, Samsung and LG. Something that Ron said was that the Sony Smartwatch didn't impress him because it had to link to a phone. Later in the discussion Gina stated that the new smartwatches will link to the user's phone and Ron agreed. I was a bit confused by that. Best regards, David S. Hale (DSHale in chat)
