Google, Acer and the joke that is the Open Handset Alliancehttp://betanews.com/2012/09/17/google-acer-and-the-joke-that-is-the-open-handset-alliance/

.

Andy on G+https://plus.google.com/112599748506977857728/posts/hRcCi5xgaygWhat Would Andy Say?

.

First some background. Google's Open Handset Alliance was created back in 2007 as a means of getting all hardware partners working with Android to agree to certain terms that would push the platform forward. Acer joined the alliance in 2009. Not much has happened with the Alliance in recent months, but flash forward to last week when Acer suddenly cancelled a new conference that they were holding to announce their new Aliyun mobile OS with Alibaba. It's a cloud based OS based on Android code, but effectively incompatible. In other words, forked.

The hub bub surrounds the revelation that Google applied at least some pressure on Acer to discontinue their direction with the Aliyun OS announcement. Essentially, as Acer is a member of the Open Handset Alliance, producing a version of the Android OS that is incompatible goes against the terms. Therefore, if they plan on releasing said forked OS, they would no longer be part of the Alliance.

BTW the Amazon Kindle is probably the most famous version of forked (or incompatible) Android, but the difference there is, of course, Amazon didn't agree to take part in the Alliance in advance and are thereby not restricted by its terms.
Andy Rubin took to G+ to put a word out to Alibaba's VP of Intl Corporate Affairs, John Spelich. He said: "Aliyun uses the Android runtime, framework and tools. And your app store contains Android apps (including pirated Google apps)." and "if you want to benefit from the Android ecosystem, then make the choice to be compatible…. But if you don't want to be compatible, then don't expect help from OHA members that are all working to support and build a unified Android ecosystem."

This has all brought the question of openness to the surface for many a pundit. How open *is* Android really? Was Google justified?

JHMotorola Announces The RAZR i With A 2GHz Intel CPU And 4.3-Inch Display, Launching In Europe And Latin America Next Monthhttp://www.androidpolice.com/2012/09/18/motorola-announces-the-razr-i-with-a-2ghz-intel-cpu-and-4-3-inch-display-launching-in-europe-and-latin-america-next-month/

Current version of Chrome not compatible with RAZR i, Intel-friendly update coming soonhttp://www.androidcentral.com/current-version-chrome-not-compatible-razr-i-intel-friendly-version-coming-soon

.

Motorola officially unveiled their first Android device powered by Intel. The RAZR i has the same body as the RAZR M (4.3" etc) and more or less the same specs as well, except of course for the Intel 2GHz Medfield single core chip with hyperthreading that they say makes up for the lack of multi-core processing. Also, no Chrome browser included as it doesn't currently support the Intel chip, but Motorola confirmed to Android Central that an update is coming soon.

Engadget put the phone through a number of benchmarking tests and though the Medfield chip is fully capable and bests the RAZR M in browser performance, it lags in nearly every other way as compared to the M's dual-core Snapdragon S4 1,5GHz processor. But overall, it sounds like it performed reasonably well.
The camera was a big talking point, as the RAZR i boasts a start-up time
of 1 second and 10FPS capabilities. Also included is a hardware shutter
button.

Available in October in UK, France, Germany, Brazil Argentina and Mexico. No word on US release, if at all.

RRHey Guys,

I was watching episode 76 of All about Android and noticed that you showcased the ultimate rotation control app in the Arena. I also wanted to add that it is amazingly useful for Google TV. If you sideload apps onto the Google TV (Songza being a good example), they will try and go into portrait mode for some reason. This gives you pretty undesirable effect. The way to correct this is to use Ultimate Rotation Control to force the Google TV to play all apps in landscape mode so you never run into that problem. Just wanted to give a heads up. I hope that helped.

Cheers,

Mark Lastiwka
