24 | History | Evidence found in archaeological sites indicates the presence of man in the park area for at least 4300 years. When a military base was constructed during the Second World War, a switchback road joined Tofino and Ucluelet. A federal-provincial agreement to create Pacific Rim National Park was signed in 1970. The park was declared a "national park reserve" in the late 1980s because of unresolved native lands claims. | |
