iaIs driving with Google Glass on your face legal in California? I guess we'll find out because the person who got a ticket for driving with Google Glass is fighting that ticket in court. Cecilia Abadie's attorney says that Glass was not being used while his client was driving, but was activated when she looked up at the officer as he stood at her window after pulling her over for speeding. They will also argue that the citation for driving with a video screen on should not apply to wearable devices like Google Glass. http://www.sfgate.com/technology/businessinsider/article/A-California-Woman-Got-A-Traffic-Ticket-For-5032833.php

http://www.theverge.com/2013/12/3/5172498/chrome-apps-could-start-coming-to-android-and-ios-as-early-as-next

.

30- Google is working on bringing Chrome packaged apps to iOS and Android
- It is building a toolkit to create & port Chrome apps for mobile

- Chrome packaged apps take advantage of Chrome-specific APIs to gain access to your PC's hardware. So, Google had to come up with a way to replicate those browser APIs in Android and iOS.
- So, Google is building a compatibility layer for those apps using open source Apache Cordova tools
- The Apache Cordova tools will give these Chrome packaged apps access to that hardware by providing equivalent Chrome app APIs

- The tools were found by TheNextWeb on a GitHub repository (not on Google Code, though). It's not clear when the tools will be complete, but Google developer advocate Joe Marini says it should be ready for more thorough testing early next year: “We hope to have something in beta form in January.”
- Google says the apps will be good enough to publish to both Google Play and Apple’s App Store.

Q: What's the end game for Google on this? Would this bolster Chrome OS? Converge Chrome and Android?
Side:
Chrome packaged apps:
- A packaged app is a web app that's bundled into a .crx file and can use Chrome extension features
- Packaged apps are a type of installable web app—a web app that can be installed in Chrome.

Support:
The requirements suggest Android 4.x will be supported initially, although Cordova could work with Android 2.2 and 2.3 as well. iOS support is still marked as “TBA” but development has already started.

Netflix Signs on With AMS-IX in New Yorkhttp://www.datacenterknowledge.com/archives/2013/12/03/netflix-signs-on-with-ams-ix-in-new-york/

.

Open-IXhttp://www.open-ix.org/

.

- Netflix will be the first customer for AMS-IX New York, making it the first major Internet player to ink a deal with an Internet Exchange created through the Open-IX initiative i
- Why do you care?
- We think: I request a webpage on my computer a server sends it to me
- Some of us know: I send a request but it has to get routed from my ISP through a transit provider of some kind like Level3
- What few of us probably knew: IXP (Internet Exchange Provider) is the place where those interconnects happen
- IXPs in US are centralized and run by companies like Equinix who can charge for running the fiber from one box to another
- GigaOm reprinted a chart showing avg. fiber cross-connect price in European cities vs. IS. Staggeringly more expensive in US
- Why? Europe has open IXPs owned by members rather than 3rd party
- Also housed more widely to avoid single point failure. 350 East Cermak in Chicago goes down the Internet goes down. (Hurricane Sandy)
- David Temkin, Director of Network Architecture at Netflix and Strategy and Chair Board of Directors of the Open-IX Association. Martin Hannigan, from Akamai.
- Other members of the volunteer board have day jobs at Google, Comcast and Iron Mountain.
Q: Do you think this could be another factor in why Internet is so expensive per megabyte in US?

Regarding tablets in Applebee's - this is actually very common in Tokyo, normally seen at places called Izakayas, which are basically sit down bars with food. Based on the two I went to, it was AWESOME. Instantly order drinks and food, it arrives in minutes, and best for an American in Tokyo, you can request more chopsticks after you drop your 5th pair on the floor.

I also found it led to way more impulse ordering, especially after a few beers, which is great for the restaurant, not so great for me or my wallet. But I think these could definitely work in the states, I look forward to it.
