His name might not be familiar, but if you've ever seen one of those Apple promo videos about either the iPad or MacBook design, you've seen his face. dkGoogle rolled out a new feature to its social network called Google+ Events. One small issue - any event you were invited to appeared on your Google Calendar automatically even if you hadn't confirmed. Additionally, there was plenty of spam involved as popular users of Google+ like Will Wheaton received tons of invites by people who had put him in a circle. Google is pushing out fixes right now and apologized to Wheaton directly. http://techcrunch.com/2012/06/29/google-is-rolling-out-changes-to-crack-down-on-google-event-spam/

iaThe Wall Street Journal says that Twitter's mobile ad strategy appears to be working. dkIf you build it, they will come. Google Chrome for iOS was the top free app for iPad and iPhone one day after it was released. http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/12/06/28/att_asked_rim_for_iphone_competitor_while_it_was_apples_exclusive_carrier.html

.

- Reuters reports that Steve Ballmer approached RIM this year to put together another BFF deal like it did with Nokia. Would this have been a good idea?
- Meanwhile, Matias Duarte of Google says he'd love to have a RIM built phone running Android citing his love of physical keyboards - good idea?
- A WSJ report says that major wireless carriers like ATT and Verizon turned to RIM in 2010 to reduce the amount of influence Apple would have due to the iPhone. This led to the Storm and Torch - what do we think of this opportunity that RIM had?
- RIM shares closed down $1.74 to $7.39 US. new 9-year low
- WSJ: AT&T and Verizon both reportedly turned to RIM because they were concerned about the "wild popularity of the iPhone." Their goals in partnering with RIM were to prevent Apple from gaining "outsize influence in the market," the report said.
- While AT&T and RIM collaborated to make the BlackBerry Torch, Verizon and Vodafone also worked with RIM on the first BlackBerry touchscreen device, the Storm.

- Google+ Events rolled out with a hitch
- Ticked off popular folks like Wil Wheaton by spamming him with invites by those who have circled him.
- "It’s too bad that I’ll never use it, and will kill it with fire, because Google has, yet again, made a product that may be useful and cool, but forced it upon users without giving users any control over how invasive it is."
- Vic Gondotra wrote a response apologizing and says they'll fix it.

- Massive misstep or something that wouldn't be an issue at large?
- Generally - placing invites in the calendar - good idea or bad idea?

RSA SecurID 800 Token Attack Detailed By Researchershttp://www.informationweek.com/news/security/vulnerabilities/240002769

.

- Security researchers, in a paper to be presented at an upcoming crypto conference, claim to have cracked 8 types of cryptographic tokens
- The attack exploits vulnerabilities found in tokens from RSA, Aladdin, Siemens and 5 others.
- Problem lies in PKCS#1 version 1.5, a Public-Key Cryptography Standard published by RSA Labs that defines the mathematical properties of public and private keys.
- PKCS#1 1.5 is an early version of the standard dating back to 1993 which was replaced by version 2.0 in 1998 and then later with 2.1 in 2002.
- The technique researchers used to crack the public-key crypto standard is called a Padding Oracle Attack. Not to be confused with the computer company, this attacks the cipher-block chaining part of the crypto, which can allow the attacker to decrypt messages without knowing the encryption key.
- The attack takes on average 13 minutes for the RSA SecurID 800 authenticator
- RSA responded with a blog post titled "Don't believe everything you read...your RSA SecurID token is not cracked."
- RSA's CTO Sam Curry staed that the vulnerability makes it possible for an attacker to gain access to a symmetric key and encrypted data sent to the smart card, however doing so requires both the smartcard device and the PIN.
- The attack does not impact the one-time password functionality of the token
- Situation comes down to vendors, in this case RSA, using antiquated crypto standards -- in thise case one published by RSA!
- The CRYPTO 2012 Conference is scheduled for August 19 in Santa Barbra.

HP said to dump Microsoft over Surfacehttp://semiaccurate.com/2012/06/29/hp-said-to-dump-microsoft-over-surface/#.T-2s75neWtA.hackernews

HP says it won't sell an ARM-based Windows 8 tablet initially, planning Intel-only business version
http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/29/3126176/hp-windows-rt-tablet-intel-only-intially

.

- The news from HP was that it's going to initially focus on x86 based Win8 tablets.
- Rumors place the blame on the introduction of the MS surface - the story goes MS saw the designs of its OEM partners and then made its surface plans. Miffed HP or bunk?
Paul Thurrott: So. That story is missing a crucial detail.

This is true:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-06-29/hewlett-packard-will-shun-arm-amid-debut-of-microsoft-windows-8.html

The detail is that this has nothing to do with Surface. HP had made this decision previously. Also, this is "at launch." HP will almost certainly be making RT-based devices at a later date.

dkResearchers use spoofing to hack into flying dronehttp://www.bbc.com/news/technology-18643134

.

- A University of Texas at Austin team used "spoofing" - a technique where the drone mistakes the signal from hackers for the one sent from GPS satellites.
- By Sept. 30, 2015, drones will have to have access to U.S. airspace that is currently reserved for piloted aircraft.
- FAA working on NextGen: Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), uses GPS to determine aircraft location
- GPS will update a plane’s location every second, instead of the six to 12 seconds it takes with current radar systems
- SAASM allows satellite authentication, over-the-air rekeying, and contingency recovery.
- Replaces the older, PPS-SM system which required periodic updates with a classified "Red Key" that may only be transmitted by secure means.
- SAASM can be updated with an encrypted "Black Key" - meaning over unclassified channels

- The home, invaded by at least 8 officers using 2 flash bangs, was found to harbor a open wireless router - not the suspected poster.
- While the homeowner isn't pleased the city is paying to repair damages to the house as the police department justifies the raid
- After further investigation and surveillance on a nearby house the police decided the threats had come from the same street.
" "- In a second raid, this time with only two officers, the police simply knocked on the door.
- The posted is suspected to be a teenage who admitted to the press that he has ""a smart mouth"" and dislikes cops, however he denied making the threats.
- Waste of taxpayer dollars? Another case of IP Address != person? Juvenile trolling?"

[2] Hi Twits, I've been playing around with Apple's Podcast app and found a reason to ditch my much beloved Stitcher: easy video/audio switching. It works like this: you subscribe to the TNT video feed. Start watching it while eating a Belgian waffle for breakfast. Time to dash out for work? Simply lock the screen and the audio continues playing. Yes, I know you can also play a YouTube video's audio if you double-click the home button when your phone is locked. The difference here is that Apple has, somehow, listened to my prayers and simplified the process to make this transition a 'feature' of this app. Downside: it no longer has that skeumorphic tape deck and you can't skip ahead/back. You do, however, have the ability to make it play at different speeds (2x, 1/2x, etc.). Behave! Rico
[3] type hereHello TNT Crew- Feel free to paraphase as needed.... In today's show you guys were discussing the concept of "social" within the next version of ITunes. One of the things that iTunes needs to desparately fix is the multiple accounts problem. I want the ablity to "share" an account across multiple e-mail accounts and be able to "merge" accounts, especially when I have apps tied to multiple e-mail accounts. Because Apple does not allow you to merge app purchases, you are forced to authenticate multiple passwords when applying app updates when apps are tied to more than one email account Another challenge comes when manging the apps across the entire family. If I purchase a game that may not be suitable for my children (or the reverse of not wanting a dozen Dora apps synching to my iPad), better and more granular app managment across all family devices is grossly needed. Imagine the concept of a "family account" all tied to a single credit card number, with kids and wife all on sharing the same account. Imagine the ability to set weekly app "allowances" for the kids? Restrictions on media content that can be purchased? With all of these features being managed from a iCloud ecosystem. This is WAY more important than even worrying about social because doing this correctly is tied to Apple's REVENUE and social is not. Point #2. Do you think any part of the timing of this new iTunes announcement conicides with the rumored AppleTv product where additional functionality may needed to manage applications, media, content on that system too? Have a great weekend and make sure Jason Howell shows you the $1500 acryllic brick he bought at Google IO with Leo's money. Not sure if his expense report is going to pass mustard on this time. C.J. Land
