slFacebook launched two-factor authentication almost 2 years ago, but this week security gets stronger yet. After an initial limited test phase in 2011, Facebook is launching Trusted Contacts across the world today, a way to recover access to your account through friends that you trust. You select between three to five friends to add to the Trusted Contacts list. If your account gets compromised or you forget your password, these friends can help by supplying security codes. So choose wisely. http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/2/4292744/facebook-trusted-contacts-account-security-launch

tmYou may not have known Facebook allowed videos of decapitations on its website, but it did, and now it doesn't. A one-minute video of a woman being beheaded by a masked man was uploaded to the site last week, drawing attention to the issue. Facebook initially allowed the video because it was being used to condemn the practice and the company believed people had a right to depict the world in which we live. The BBC reports Facebook will now remove instances of these videos while they evaluate its policy. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-22368287

slFacebook’s Declining User Growth Rate, Picturedhttp://allthingsd.com/20130502/facebooks-declining-user-growth-rate-pictured/

.

- Daily active users as a % of monthly active users — good engagement metric — is very slowly rising, at about 60% compared to 55% since Q1 of 2011.
- MAU (1.11B) DAU (665M).
- growth rate slowing in US & Europe, biggest revenue markets for FB
- percentage of Facebook’s total ad revenue that came from mobile rose to 30%, up from 23% last quarter.
- Mobile revenues effectively equals mobile advertising, since gifts, also sold on mobile, are negligible. Next quarter FB will start making another revenue stream in mobile by way of Parse, the mobile development platform. Parse has around 60,000 developers, and offers a freemium model based on usage, with the cheapest paid version priced at around $199 per month.
- Sheryl Sandberg said 3800 developers used app install ads to drive over 25M installs. 40% of the top 100 iOS and Android app developers bought these ads in the last week of Q1 alone. Mark Zuckerberg meanwhile said, “We’re starting to see real revenue from selling mobile app installs.”
- developers promote their apps in the mobile news feed with a large image, description, and “install now” button that opens the app’s page in appropriate app store.
- SEC filing: Chief Accounting Officer David Spillane is leaving the company. Spillane had been the company’s revenue controller since 2008, overseeing growth and IPO. He is getting replaced by Jas Athwal effective May 10.

iaYouTube’s Ad Pitch, Take Two — Buy Our Stars, Not Hollywood’shttp://allthingsd.com/20130502/youtubes-ad-pitch-take-two-buy-our-stars-not-hollywoods/

.

- Yesterday, YouTube held an event trying to get advertisers
- According to Peter Kafka at AllThingsD, YouTube is trying a different approach - "YouTube is now arguing that the stuff people watch on YouTube is better than TV — because they’re watching it on YouTube."
- This year, no emphasis on YouTube's "funded channels" like last year, no testimonials from traditional producers, directors, actors
- YouTube's big push was on its billion viewers a month and kept stars familiar to YouTube viewers up front
- Producer Brian Robbins talked about how his teenage sons don't watch TV, they watch YT (Robbins just sold his AwesomenessTV YT Channel to Dreamworks)
- YT spent little time telling advertisers it would sell video ads they way advertisers buy TV ads

Q: Yahoo and AOL are using Hollywood stars to bring in advertisers. Is YouTube big enough that it can sell itself based on its homegrown talent? Will YT have to bend to traditional ads if it wants to grow larger than it is?

slApple’s iOS 7 Team in Deadline Crunch Mode, Adding Engineershttp://allthingsd.com/20130501/apples-ios-7-team-in-deadline-crunch-mode-adding-engineers/

.

- more sources say iOS 7 is radically different enough for apple to be grabbing engineers en masse
- “borrowing” engineers from the OS X 10.9 team as part of an effort to double down on iOS 7. “Yes, yes — it’s essentially a repeat of the iPhone/Leopard scenario,” one source said, referring to Apple’s 2007 decision to pull engineers from OS X 10.5 to work on iPhone. “Not as much of a fire drill, though. It will ship on time.”
- “Put it this way,” said one source who has been briefed on iOS. “You know Game Center’s green felt craps table? Well, goodbye, Circus Circus.”
rene ritchie: "Until Apple announces something, it can't be "delayed". If they're not meeting internal schedules, if they're adding resources from other projects, if they're pushing features out to future versions, if they're doing any number of things a company their size does when working on a project of iOS' size, that's not "delayed", that's "development".

Hi Guys,

I'm a recent subscriber and instant fan of the show.

After hearing about Retwact I feel it's unlikely to work well without backing from Twitter.

If Twitter were to act on the problem Retwact tries to address I think creating support for versioning tweets could have some very interesting applications. Existing tweets could be edited in place and retweeters could be given the choice to let updates flow through or stick to a specific version.

Versioning of tweets would actually give twitter a whole other dimension of creative possibilities.

Yours in stitches and informed

Show 744: Merging Chrome and Android:

Perhaps Sarah hit upon it tangentially and this conversation about Chrome and Android merging is really more branding. Samsung looks to be seriously considering forking Android in much the same way Amazon has, to capitalize on their market position in handsets. HTC is also dipping its toe in the water in much the same way with the Facebook OS, as well as their own inhouse skin of the OS.

Meanwhile Google has the dual problems of a sinking Motorola albatross and the possibility that vanilla Android and/or lightly skinned versions of the OS are only going to be left on also ran handsets

Perhaps Google rebrands Motorola as the Nexus Chrome, a premium version of Android, and hopes we get into the habit of referring to its flagship skin as the Chrome OS. Think Toyota v. Lexus.

Great Show
