slJonathan Ive, Apple's product visionary who took over iOS after Scott Forstall's departure last year, is not only shunning skewmorphic designs like wood bookshelves for the Newsstand feature, he's also revamping the e-mail and calendar tools, said anonymous sources tell Bloomberg. Ive is also said to be encouraging collaboration between software and hardware teams, something Steve Jobs didn't do.
Engineers are said to be in a full on sprint to finish iOS 7 in time for a WWDC preview, and for a full release as soon as September.

tmGoogle released its official schedule for the Google I/O developers conference on May 15. While it doesn't mention a return skydiving performance, it does cut down the keynotes from two days to one, though it's 3 hours long. slPath, the private social network that maxes out at 150 friends and claims to be adding 1 million new users per week, may be doing so a little too aggressively. Users report the service is spamming their phone's address books with texts and in some cases, robocalls to landlines. Nate Johnson, VP of marketing for Path, says the messages are supposed to be a feature, not a bug. "Path is really best with friends and we really want to help users invite the people that they care about to their Path as quickly as possible."http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/30/4286090/path-is-spamming-address-books-with-unwanted-texts-and-robocalls

iaThe U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California dismissed Craigslist's copyright claims against 3Taps, Lovely, and Padmapper. The court found that while Craigslist's posts were original enough to give it copyright protection, Craigslist's own terms didn't give it an exclusive license to the data. The court said that "Without an exclusive license, Craigslist cannot sue for infringement;
the [Terms of Use] provision that purportedly granted Craigslist the right to sue is 'impermissible.'" 3Taps didn't get off scott-free and was found to violate the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act because it went around technical barriers Craigslist put up to keep 3Taps off its site.

tmA piece of Spyware called FinSpy, used by some governments for remote monitoring, is the target of a cease-and-desist by Mozilla. The issue is that FinSpy masquerades as the Firefox browser, which Mozilla says is trademark infringement. Toronto's CitizenLab says they have found three instances of FinSpy pretending to be Firefox right down to the info in Windows Properties. The software is alleged to have been used against dissidents in Bahrain and Ethiopia among others.http://www.wired.com/wiredenterprise/2013/04/finfisher-firefox/

iaAMD just introduced the world to its Heterogeneous Uniform Memory Access technology. hUMA tech would allow for GPUs and CPUs to work better together, which AMD says will bring longer battery life in the same form factor. In short, hUMA allows the GPU and CPU access to the same data and allows each to allocate and access any location in the system's virtual memory space. Tasks are doled out to the processor that can handle that task in a more seamless way. The result - Faster computing, more battery life. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/AMD-HSA-hUMA-APU,22324.html

slPath is spamming address books with unwanted texts and robocalls — againhttp://www.theverge.com/2013/4/30/4286090/path-is-spamming-address-books-with-unwanted-texts-and-robocalls

.

- steven kenwright, lives in UK, has blog post up about installing Path, uninstalling within 30 min, then entire next day getting messages from everyone in address book that he has pics to share on Path, getting phone calls to landlines, etc. In UK, text sent to landline will ring phone and robot read the text
- path responded to kenwright's tweet 17 hours later, told him: Path doesn’t collect data from my phone book, and they definitely don’t have the numbers for phone contacts stored somewhere – they had meant to send the messages WITHIN the half hour I was a Path member.
- service does send mass messages to a user's Facebook friends during the sign-up process. By default, Path assumes you want to send a message to all your Facebook friends, displaying a list with every name checked. The user must then tap "unselect all," or Path will text a signup link to every friend. This configuration has been in place since Path's last release on March 6th.

Hey TNT gang. Listening to your April 30th show I heard you talking about Thorstein Heins' opinion that tablet computers won't last five years. While I don't agree with that, I can see how it might eventually happen.

I would personally like to see the smart phone become a 'black box' that seamlessly interfaces with whatever preferred audio and/or video devices you tell it to, be it an HDTV, a Google Glass type thing or just a bluetooth earpiece, or, yes, even a tablet. With no screen to power, battery life would improve even with the extra wireless connections. The black box in your pocket would become a gateway device, responsible for keeping you connected and protecting your private information at the same time.

I believe personal communication tech is headed in this direction eventually, but I don't believe I'll see it in the next 5 years as Mr. Heins suggested. With all the standards and cooperation involved, maybe not in 20 years.

I listen to your show via podcast just about every night while driving my delivery route, and it keeps me informed as well as awake! Keep up the good work!

- Chris
