iaJohns Hopkins University asked one of its cryptography professors to take down a blogpost that discussed the NSA defeating encryption. The University said it received information that the post linked to classified information and used the NSA logo. After looking into the post, the university found that the information linked was not classified and the NSA logo was removed. Johns Hopkins says it was not contacted by the federal government and it's still looking into the origin of the alert. http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/09/crypto-prof-asked-to-remove-nsa-related-blog-post/

tmThe Samsung Exynos 5 Octa chip has 8 cores, but only can run four at a time. Until soon! Samsung is close to launching Heterogeneous Multi-Processing for the Octa in Q4, which will allow the chip to run any number of cores in any configuration. Android Police reports it's a combo software and hardware upgrade, so little chance you'll see it in the newly-announced Galaxy Note 3, but new Samsung mobile devices that come along this autumn just might.

tmMirrorless cameras have not caught on outside Japan, which is why they were a no-brainer for troubled Olympus! The OM-D E-M1 launches today and Olympus claims its the first mirror less camera to compete on quality with SLRs. The successor to the E-5 will cost 145,000 yen about US$1,500 for the body-only version. Olympus hopes sales of the new model can help the camera division break-even so the folks in Olympus's highly-profitable endoscopy department stop making fun of them at company picnics.http://uk.reuters.com/article/2013/09/10/us-olympus-mirrorless-idUKBRE9890FM20130910

Google now automatically shares Blogger posts to Google+, turns feature on by default for linked accountshttp://thenextweb.com/google/2013/09/10/google-now-automatically-shares-blogger-posts-to-google-turns-feature-on-by-default-for-linked-accounts/

.

- Expect to see more Google+ around the web
- Google launched an embed feature so users of Google+ can embed public posts using a bit of JavaScript and the actual embed code
- (sounds like you'd have to have full control of the site since you'd need to add JS before you close the body tag)
- The embedded post looks like a Google+ card with the familiar profile pic, options to follow, hashtags, comments below the post. If the post is edited on +, it'll update the embedded version
- Google has a list of suppported types of posts: posts w/ images, w/vids, w/ links to a community. Not supported: posts from w/in a community, posts restricted to a Google Apps domain, private posts, events posts, and Hangout on Air posts
- Google also announced that Blogger users can automatically share their blogposts directly to Google+
- Google will also partner with WordPress and Typepad will support signing in with Google and be a part of Google's Authorship program
- If you sign in with Google+ to your WordPress account, for example, Google will now highlight your name, picture and link to your Google+ profile when your posts appear in its search results.

Q: Will this popularize Google+ with the Facebook types?

tmCrypto prof asked to remove NSA-related blog posthttp://arstechnica.com/security/2013/09/crypto-prof-asked-to-remove-nsa-related-blog-post/

Blogger version of Green's posthttp://blog.cryptographyengineering.com/2013/09/on-nsa.html

.

- Thanks to spsheridan for submitting to the subreddit
- Cryptography Researcher Matthew Green (Assistant Research Professor) at Johns Hopkins wrote post about NSA subverting crypto standards
- Dean asked Green to take down post. Green took down from U. servers but left on blogger. Removed NSA logo from both
- AT told: Univesrity "received information" of links to classified material and use of NSA logo
- Green said on Twitter he was told someone at Applied Physics Lab was the source of request.
- Uni spokesperson Dennis O'Shea told AT "we did not receive any inquiry from the federal government about the blog or any request from the government to take down the mirror site. (Or of course, the personal site, though that never was taken down and we never asked that it be taken down). As to where the information came from, we are still tracing the path of this event, which all exploded into our notice over the past couple of hours."
- NSA logo removed and links appear to be to news media and so mirror may be restored

Q: Which bothers you more, the mysterious nature of the request or the fact that its using copyright to chill speech?

iaPayPal Debuts Its Newest Hardware, Beacon, A Bluetooth LE Enabled Device For Hands-Free Check Ins And Payments http://techcrunch.com/2013/09/09/paypal-debuts-its-newest-hardware-beacon-a-bluetooth-le-enabled-device-for-hands-free-check-ins-and-payments/

PayPal Teases Beacon, a Piece of Hands-Free Payment Hardware Fighting an Uphill Battlehttp://allthingsd.com/20130910/paypal-teases-beacon-a-piece-of-hands-free-payment-hardware-fighting-an-uphill-battle/

.

- Paypal's taking on Square again
- PayPal introduced a piece of hardware called "Beacon" that will allow PayPal users to pay for items in stores "hands-free."
- So here's the scenario: a store installs Beacon in their place of business. That device works with a compatable point-of-sales system. A PayPal user comes in and can pay w/ their PayPal account at the point of sale w/o having to take out their phones or wallets
- The PayPal user would have to have previously opted into the ability to use Beacon
- Technology behind Beacon: it uses Bluetooth Low Energy instead of using GPS geofencing like Square. That would mean less battery drain. The Beacon is a small USB dongle that runs on WiFi and can plugs into an outlet (w/ a USB power adapter)
- Compatible PoS systems include: ShopKeep, Vend, and Leaf
- PayPal is testing Beacon w/ a handful of vendors in Q4. Larger roll out is expected next year
- PayPal says that the cost of the device has not been determined yet but it will be in the double digits.

Q: Do you see vendors picking up this device? Do you see PayPal users backing this service?

- Nintendo sales peaked in Q3 2008 at height of Wii.
- Microsoft and Sony consoles declining but end of cycle
- Sony portables declining
- Combined console sales peaked Q3 2008 declining steadily since
"Like other “applications” that used to have systems built around them conforming to their needs[3] the dedicated-purpose solutions came to be absorbed into the general-purpose platforms."
"as mobile devices get inexorably better, they will be hired for use in the setting where consoles have been king: the living room."

Dear TNT-

Love the show.

I was listening to today’s show and you guys were talking about the idea of a digital license plate and Tom was saying that the device shouldn’t have GPS on it. It seems like everyone is so caught up on the idea of government spying that they don’t see the benefits of GPS on a license plate.

It seems like once a week I’m driving down the parkway and I see a sign lit up that says “Amber Alert: Missing Adult Grey Toyota Plate # ABC 1234”. If that license plate had a GPS in it, that adult would no longer be missing. I just thought that was an important point to bring up.

Keep up the great work guys. Again, I love the show.
