tmThe Washington Post published documents it received from Edward Snowden earlier this summer reporting that the US NSA broke its privacy rules 2,776 times in a one year period reported May 2012. The report was a self-audit meant for the NSA's top leaders. Members of Congress could only read the report in a secure room and would not be allowed to take notes. The incidents ranged from typos to computer error, to workload issues. The Post reported tha the secret court known as FISC ordered one fiber optic cable tap stopped in October 2011 for violating the 4th ammendment. One of the documents published details how to strip out details when reporting incidents o FISA Ammendement Act overseers.http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/08/newly-published-leaks-show-nsas-thousands-of-privacy-violations/

iaThe Verge reports that Nokia will be launching a 10.1-inch Windows RT powered tablet in an event in New York tentatively scheduled for September 26th. There's even a picture of the tablet - or an alleged picture of the back of the tablet floating around on the Internet. If the pic is real, apparently Nokia hopes you like magenta RT-powered tablets running on LTE networks. http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/16/4627220/nokia-windows-rt-tablet-pictures-leak-rumor

iaDell, the company, not the man, reported financials for its fiscal second quarter. The company's net income fell 72% compared to the same time last year. For the second quarter, Dell pulled in $204 million - last year it made $732 million. The declining numbers still were better than the low expectations set by Wall Street and shares rose less than 1%. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-08-16/dell-results-underscore-challenges-facing-turnaround-plan.html

iaYesterday, Google revoked access to Microsoft's YouTube app for Windows Phone. This was Microsoft's second attempt at a YouTube app and Google's second rejection of such an app. Microsoft had enough and posted a lengthy blogpost entitled "The limits of Google's openness" saying that Google's reasoning for rejecting the YouTube app is "nothing other than excuses" and that "Google's reasons for blocking our app are manufactured so that we can't give our users the same experience Android and iPhone users are getting." Microsoft said Google has set up impossible to overcome roadblocks and Google knows it. Strong words. Let's see what Google says. http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/15/4625502/microsoft-responds-to-google-youtube-windows-phone-block

tmThe Wall Street Journal Digits blog reports Apple has posted on LinkedIn more than 200 jobs available in China. Among the jobs are an environmental affairs program manager, a security specialist and a store specialist. Apple has struggled with accusations of environmental and human rights violations at its Chinese manufacturing partner FoxConn. iaMercedes gave Wired a demo of its car with Google Glass integration. The first app it showed off was sending navigation data from Google Glass to the Mercedes in-dash navigation system. Mercedes’ North American R&D President & CEO says the company has been "working with Glass for roughly six months and meeting with the Google Glass team regularly." http://www.wired.com/autopia/2013/08/google-glass-mercedes-benz/

tmGoogle Cloud Storage, an enterprise-level service used by the likes of Ubisoft and Best Buy will begin automatically encrypting its clients data. 128-bit AES encryption will be applied to data before it is written to disk. Google will use the same key system it uses for its own data. User data and metadata is encrypted using a unique key, which is then encrypted using a second key associated with the data owner, which is in turn encrypted using a "regularly rotated" master key. Google will hold these keys. Amazon has offered 256-bit AES encryption on its competing S3 service since 2011.http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/16/4627232/google-cloud-storage-automated-128-bit-aes-security

iaThe Ubuntu Edge Indiegogo campaign hit a milestone by having over $10.3 million pledged. This amount is more than the Pebble smartwatch picked up via crowdfunding. Canonical is still looking to raise $32 million in total. Only 6 more days left to fund the Edge. So if my math is right, there's a better chance the mythical Apple television set will launch tomorrow than the Edge getting funding.http://thenextweb.com/mobile/2013/08/16/canonical-raises-10-3m-for-ubuntu-edge-beats-the-pebble-as-the-highest-crowdfunding-campaign-ever/

iaWSJ: Sony looking to launch online cable competitor, in talks with Viacom, Disney http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/15/sony-tv/

.

Viacom-Sony TV Is a Big Deal. It’s Also the Same Deal We Already Have.http://allthingsd.com/20130815/viacom-sony-tv-is-a-big-deal-its-also-the-same-deal-we-already-have/

.

- The WSJ reports that Sony has reached a preliminary deal with Viacom to carry its channels on Sony's planned pay-TV service
- Viacom owns a number of channels like Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and MTV
- The Journal says none of the other companies trying to do internet-based pay TV has a major deal like this in place
- The Journal's sources say that Sony still has to "nail down details" with Viacom and is still in talks with Walt Disney, Time Warner and CBS

Sony's Service
- Sony wants to stream cable channels and on-demand programming over the Internet to devices like Sony TV sets and PlayStation (expectations say PS first)
- It would include a recommendation system. Content companies can supply some of those and Sony will provide some recs based on an algorithm
- The Journal says Sony's interface is "highly graphic and easy to use"
Q: What would this do for Sony as a company?

Peter Kafka at ATD thinks that the content companies will just sell their bundles to Sony the same way they would any other TV operator. He cites that when DirecTV, Dish, ATT and others showed up, the companies agreed to give them content, but the terms were pretty much the same.

Q: Even if we get the same style of service, wouldn't having Internet-based competition be good for consumers?

iaMercedes Is Testing Google Glass Integration, and It Actually Workshttp://www.wired.com/autopia/2013/08/google-glass-mercedes-benz/

.

- Wired has an article about Mercedes testing Google Glass integration with its cars
- Mercedes demoed a function called "Door-to-Door Navigation" with Wired's Damon Lavrinc
- Here's how the system works: using a navigation app, you input an address through Google Glass, then you get in the car, plug in your phone and the destination is transferred to the in-car nav system
- When the trip is over, unplug your phone and the system transfers data back to Glass
- Mercedes even figured out a way to get this to work with iPhones even though Glass doesn't support iPhones by using a convulted connection between Glass, Mercedes' own servers and the iPhone.
- This rigging of Mercedes/Glass/iPhones is a proof of concept says Johann Jungwirth, Mercedes' North American R&D and that this will likely not be the way the system works when its launched. This is a prototype
- Mercedes will be integrating some form of Google Glass in the future with Android integration coming in 2014

Q: What do you think of this way of integrating Glass with a car?

Hey TNT crew,
Seems like stories of US-government surveillance and whether or not corporations are cooperating with it are surfacing daily. Just about everyone swears that they are not actively passing citizen's data to the government, but with leaks coming out it is clear they have the information anyway.
This did not make a lot of sense until I heard the recent Security Now podcast about the State of Surveillance. Steve has a pretty convincing theory that the PRISM project is literally splitting light (fiber optic signals,) allowing the NSA to tap large ISP trunk lines and receive a copy of the data just upstream of the major corporations. This makes a lot of sense - how they can have copies of a company like Google's data with out Google knowing about it or being complicit.
Just an eye-opener for me and it seems relevant to many of your stories.

Love the show!
Ben from VA
