jryAlready an American success story, Twitter is looking to expand their global reach by sending three top executives abroad. Paris, Singapore and Dublin are the likely landing spots for the currently San Francisco based execs. But like Batman who had to learn how to become more than just a man in the foothills of the Himalayas before returning to Gotham as the caped crusader, All Things D's Mike Issac speculates Twitter might be using these assignments as a proving ground for later promotions.http://allthingsd.com/20130711/more-moves-abroad-for-twitters-top-brass-as-three-execs-head-overseas/

jryTwitter has relenting in turning over user data on anti-Semitic tweets to French authorities. Tweets including a hashtag that translates to The Only Good Jew is a Dead Jew were taken down after being published last October. Twitter was then compelled by a French court to turn over user data in January and after dragging their feet, were hit by a $50 million lawsuit. For their part, Twitter says the information should end any further disputes although they are "disappointed" the government compelled them to do it.http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-57593443-83/twitter-surrenders-anti-semitic-tweet-info-to-french-authorities/

dkFoxconn has posted revenue of $30 billion for the second quarter of 2013, chalking up a 0.6 percent increase from the same period a year earlier. Not a huge boost, but it is above expectations of 13 analysts in a Bloomberg compilation, and may hint that Foxconn’s efforts to reduce its reliance on Apple may be working out ok. Foxconn is most widely known as Apple’s largest supplier, but Apple has been diversifying its supply chain and outsourcing part of its iPhone and iPad production to manufacturer Pegatron. http://thenextweb.com/asia/2013/07/11/foxconn-posts-2q-2013-revenue-of-30b-up-slightly-year-on-year-despite-slowing-apple-orders/

slHow Microsoft handed the NSA access to encrypted messageshttp://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/11/microsoft-nsa-collaboration-user-data

.

- according to top-secret documents given to the Guardian by edward snowden, Microsoft worked w US intelligence services to allow users' communications to be intercepted, including letting the National Security Agency (NSA) to circumvent the company's own encryption,
- • Microsoft helped the NSA bypass its encryption to intercept web chats on the new Outlook.com portal;
• The agency already had pre-encryption stage access to email on Outlook.com, including Hotmail;
• Microsoft worked with the FBI to give NSA easier access via Prism to its cloud storage service SkyDrive
• Microsoft worked with the FBI's Data Intercept Unit to "understand" potential issues with a feature in Outlook.com that allows users to create email aliases;
- last July the NSA noted their new capability had tripled the amount of Skype video calls being collected through Prism;
• Material collected through Prism is routinely shared with the FBI and CIA, with one NSA document describing the program as a "team sport".
In a statement, Microsoft said: "When we upgrade or update products we aren't absolved from the need to comply with existing or future lawful demands." The company reiterated its argument that it provides customer data "only in response to government demands and we only ever comply with orders for requests about specific accounts or identifiers".
- In a joint statement, Shawn Turner, spokesman for the director of National Intelligence, and Judith Emmel, spokeswoman for the NSA, said::"The articles describe court-ordered surveillance – and a US company's efforts to comply with these legally mandated requirements. The US operates its programs under a strict oversight regime, with careful monitoring by the courts, Congress and the Director of National Intelligence. Not all countries have equivalent oversight requirements to protect civil liberties and privacy."

.

- The Verge is reporting that Microsoft's Surface RT tablet prices are set to be cut by $150.
- New prices as confirmed by a Staples promotional ad would range from $350 for the 32 GB Surface RT and $550 for the 64 GB Surface RT with Touch Cover
- The move follows slow sales of the devices.
- An analyst from UBS AG reported that Microsoft ordered 3 million Surface RT devices with only 900k being sold by March
- Contrast that with Apple selling nearly 23 million iPads in the same timeframe.
- This price drop follows indications of an update to the Surface RT and Surface Pro lines from Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference earlier this week.
- Bloomberg reported last month that a refresh of the Surface RT line would likely contain the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, replacing the existing Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset
- In addition to chipset rumors The Verge asserts that new accessories like a battery-equipped keyboard cover are likely to follow
