[1] Bye bye Donut. So long Eclair. And thanks to the new Google Play store app for only supporting 2.2 and higher. Jelly Bean sits at 45%, ICS at 21.7% and GB at 30.7%. Interesting to note that GB is the last eye sore here and users of GB lack support for things like GPU-based acceleration and the newest versions of OpenGL. Google does note that Eclair and Donut accounted for “about 1% of devices that checked in to Google servers.”
[2] Ron Amadeo of Arstechnica, and recent guest of AAA, wrote an interesting article that summarizes what we've discussed on the show in recent times. (probably when he was on, actually) The topic being how Google is attacking the dreaded "fragmentation" argument. The Play Services app (which isn't really an app cause it has some very integrated permissions that apps don't have) serves lower level APIs and background services. The Play Store, as we've seen in the recent past, has also played an active role in separating once-key-features of the Android OS into separate apps. He broke everything out in a neat chart the really shows just how much control Google has over the experience thanks to these two things. Ron argues that THIS is how you beat fragmentation. Koush took to G+ with an interesting followup: Google Play Services is ... a way to reassert control of Android, by having the app ecosystem add a dependence on Google. OEMs and carriers, and particularly Samsung, probably don't like this, as this prevents them from forking Android, a la Kindle, and running with it. But I had a funny realization: If OEMs actually released timely updates to their Android phones, Google Play Services would never have been necessary. QUESTION: What do we have to look forward to in future versions of the OS?
[3] First, Google finally released an new section of the Chrome Web Store dedicated to a new breed of web apps designed to run on Chrome OS in a desktop way, outside the browser. These apps run like native apps on Windows and Mac OS X, but utilizing web technologies and Chrome-specific code, so they'r really Chrome apps. Taking it further, the Chrome developers announced plans to bring Chrome apps to Android someday. They'd be delivered via the Play Store. They cautioned that this wouldn't be happening soon, but it's on the map.
[4] Vignettes: Vignettes superimpose a screenshot of your Glass display over your picture, so people can see what you see on Glass and in the world. Take a picture using Glass' camera button and tap to Make vignette. Whatever is on the display when you take the picture will appear in the vignette. Play videos through search: Use Google Search to find and play videos. Sound Search: Long press the touchpad for a Google search and swipe forward to start a sound search. Glass will listen for a moment and identify the name and artist. Alternatively, you can start a sound search by voice command. Say "ok glass, google what song is this?" from the Home menu. New Google Now cards: Transit, reminders, nearby attractions, nearby photo spots, and news. Set up a Google Apps account: Those with Google Apps can now turn on the Glass service through their admin console and set up their Glass on their Google Apps account. Most Google Apps are supported and we'll continue testing and adding services as we go. To test with us, switch your account by factory resetting your Glass through the Device info card in Settings, then set up Glass through the MyGlass website or Android app while signed in to your Google apps account. Glass searches in search history: Searches performed on Glass are now updated in your Google search history. If you'd rather keep a search anonymous, deleting it from the timeline will also delete it from your search history. Alternatively, you can turn it off entirely from the search history website. Remote control: While you screencast with the Google Glass app, you can control Glass through your phone. Try it out by swiping your phone screen to browse your timeline.
[5] The company says an app store is coming next year, when Glass is available to the general public. Google confirmed those plans with us today, but the company declined to share any additional details like if the Glass app store would be part of Google Play or separate, and if developers will be able to charge for apps by the time the store opens. (The Glass API terms of service currently demands that developers offer apps for free, a policy that can’t last forever.)

[9] 3 days on single charge Low power "mirasol" display requires no back light Wireless charging Around $300, next month
[10] A device appears in the Google video of the KitKat statue inveiling, as we showed on last week's show, and the Internet goes nuts with speculation. Welcome to Android! About 1 month ago, the "LG D820" passed through the FCC and when that info came back last week, folks at s4gru.com noted that the back plate of the device that passed through the FCC matched up with the mystery phone from the video rather well. (refer to animated GIF) Some, like often-trusted leaker EVLeaks, are saying this is not the next Nexus. Others, like Artem Russakovskii, founder of Android Police, make the case that this is in fact likely the next Nexus device thanks to a list of evidence including sources they've trusted and been proven accurate in the past. So, another week of wild speculation and much concern over a device that we literally know nothing about. WELCOME TO ANDROID!
[11] The LTE version of the Nexus 7 (2013) tablet is now available at Google Play. "Ships in 1 - 2 business days." The 32GB unlocked LTE device will work on all most major US carriers as it carries the 700, 850, AWS and 1900 MHz LTE bands. The device will come bundled with a T-Mobile SIM card, meaning you can get up and running on a pre-paid plan with just a phone call. Shipping is free, and the device checks in at $349. Also, the Google Nexus Twitter account says the Nexus 7 LTE will be at T-Mobile stores in October.
[12] Hooray for a more useful Play Store! Review filters have returned, meaning you can again sort the reviews of apps by rating, device, version, etc.
[13] Your personal G+ images that have geolocation data embedded will now appear within Google Earth!
[14] Xbox Music launched for Android yesterday. First six months of streaming on the web for free, $10 mo/$100 yr after). Mobile streaming only works with paid account. No ability to save and play offline yet, though they say its coming soon.
