Koloski20th Century Fossil BookSan Fransisco, CA20136six panels. LEDs. Laser-etched acrylic. Aluminum bottom panel edges. Book ends of limestone with fossil imprints and aluminum edged top and bottom. Vince Koloski: "I work with light because of its emotional and symbolic power. Light has a primal attraction to humans. It is a source of comfort, power, and beauty. It produces food, provides warmth and power and is a beacon of security in the night. It is also a symbol of knowledge, enlightenment, and goodness. It is also a singularly lovely medium.

"Making books that use light to create the images and text marries the symbolic and the practical aspects of light. Light in its role as a symbol of knowledge illuminating the symbols which transfer and preserve knowledge is a powerful melding medium and meaning. The presence projected by a book-like object in which the words and images seem to float in space between the covers is one which seems to appeal to human perception in a way which seems to bypass the rational entirely. An irony given that the book is the human invention most responsible for creating the information-based civilization we live in today."

The individual pages were divided into 15 stacks and printed multiple times front and back using wood, lead, brass and copper type-high elements. Chaplain, EmilyAmalgamKenner, LA20133sculpted accordionscience, differences in female and male brains, I am interested in the tension between these studies and the potential negative implications acceptance of research that finds inherent gendered brain difference could have on our lives and on obtaining gender equality in our society. The digitally printed accordion of Amalgam depicts a woman on the front and a man on the back, whose portraits were purposefully pixellated to give a sense of the images breaking down. I hand cut the pop out structure to give a sense of the two images blending together and weaving in and out of each other. The recession on the cover is a digital print evocative of neurons and was shaped to imply a microscopic slide.

Ley, MaceyCircumstantial GravityAtlanta, GA20142“Circumstantial Gravity” suggests a snapshot of a whirlwind. The reflective properties of the fanned-out clear acrylic pages create optical illusions, where the viewer must decide what is real, what is a reflection, and if there is a difference between the two.

acrylic and linen thread

Macey Ley is a self-proclaimed nomad whose work is influenced by the experience of being rootless. The form of her work follows the concept and ranges from painting and sculpture to installations and artist books. She completed her BFA in photography at the University of New Mexico and her MFA in painting at SCAD. She is a corporate event producer and creative director and has curated shows and exhibited throughout the U.S. and Italy. Ley’s work investigates connections between memory, place and identity. With a conceptual approach, she uses everyday experiences and objects as a starting point. Her works create moments or experiences that both invite and challenge viewers to examine how memory of places and beliefs in myths shape identity.

Faruk Ulay: "A portfolio in a book format, comprising thirty-six photographs and an accompanying text. The prevailing sentiment here is silence, broken with simple questions and worries about history being erased aggressively and future is being built on the ghost of a past. Cultural geography is visualized through mute photographs of disappearing urban architecture; silence and muteness are treated like covert protestations, and simple observations of decay are transformed into a fount eternal truths." - See more at: http://vampandtramp.com/finepress/u/Faruk-Ulay.html#sthash.jRMDzvgU.dpuf

Ulay, FarukDolls Found, Words LostPasadena, CA2013250 Texts and photographs by Faruk Ulay. Full color digital offset printing. Perfect bound with soft cover binding. Signed by the artist. -- Frank Ulay: "The book was created in conjunction with an exhibition. Sixteen found objects – discarded dolls, all mass-produced during the 1930s through the 1950s – were photographed on a stage constructed by the artist. Facing pages accommodate short paragraphs of text, each loosely tethered to a restless background, text that is abstruse in meaning and hazy in appearance. The edgy setting lays bare the inability of language and photography to converge seamlessly in the collective space. The text invites the viewer to differential readings, multiple layers of meaning, playful readings that allow the viewer to enter into the text and recompose it – over and over. One cannot locate a center, an imperative – a transcendental signified. It is, rather, an unending play of signs that opens up anew with each reading. This project, thus, plays with lost and reclaimed identity, queries authenticity, toys with the artist's intervention/intention to inject uniqueness into mass-produced objects, and calls into question the systems of presentation and representation.

One morning I found a moth floating on the top of an open glue pot; that beautiful moth reminded me that even the peskiest of critters have their engaging moments. Inspired, I began to draw, then did a bit of research, then figured out ways to present moth snippets and specimens in book form. I wrote the text, recruited friends to gather specimens, and designed the book and box. One of my favorite features is the detachable lid with magnifying lens built in, so one can roam around and examine other pesky critters more closely"--A. Pliny, Dr. BobExperiencing this musical existence1Accordion fold format. Pages are painted in acrylic, pen and ink, and gold leaf.
"As I get a little older, I experience moments in which life takes on a kind of musical quality. Things seem to exist like little musical phrases that are always appearing and disappearing within a wonderfully complex piece of music. I experience things undergoing changes from one state to another, like the changing tones that make up a melody. Experiencing This Musical Existence presents many examples of Change Notation, a method I have devised for deepening people’s awareness of change. Using Change Notation I am able to diagram changes in a thing’s characteristics, position and interaction with other things. Change Notation may be used to describe any experience that a person may have. Many of the symbols and structural components that are used in Music Notation, also appear in Change Notation. However, whereas Music Notation is limited to diagramming rhythms and melodies, Change Notation may be used to describe any characteristic or event a person experiences."--Author's statement, 23 Sandy Gallery website (accessed June 12, 2014).

Zipporah, ZenaFamous Women as Victorians1"One-of-a-kind. Collage and paint with text on old photo album."--Vamp & Tramp, Booksellers website.
"The Victorian women book started with the photography album and the idea of making a book about woman artists. I love collage with the addition of some paint and collaged words. It is a meaningful form for me and I would like to get back to that too. I started with pictures that were an original part of this album and embellished on them based on some of my favorite writers and artists. The de Kooning is on of the most famous modern works based on a woman. Since it was a Victorian album, the whole Victorian theme came into it."--Artist's statement, Vamp & Tramp, Booksellers website.

Reznik, MadoRegarding the death of my motherBuenos Aires, Argentina20142“Regarding the death of my mother” is an artist book where pictures, poetry and paper are intertwined. The book is divided in four sections where two female voices are heard. These voices are from memory shown through different types of paper, through windows that connects lyrical states and through pictures. Although the title refers to death the entire book moves around life and its celebration.

Paper

Mado Reznik is a visual artist and writer from Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she currently lives. She studied Linguistics and got a Ph. D. from Universidad Complutense of Madrid, Spain. She works with etchings, collages and inks. All these techniques are a reflection and a seeking journey through paper as a medium. Her main interests are memory and language. Part of the work with memory is the selection of photographs that are interlinked with texts most of them of her own. Mado Reznik has several Artist Books that has been shown in Argentina, Spain and Uruguay. She also wrote several books going from fiction and poetry to testimonials

Garcia, Julie; Jihae Kwon; Jaime Shafer; and Na'ama ZussmanReliquiaeMarginalia PressWashington, DC201330Screenprint and letterpress printing with polymer plates and linoleum blocks. Adelle, Arita, and Verlag typefaces. Text printed on Somerset heavy text and Japanese Mulberry paper. Endpapers blind embossed Hahnemuhle Bugra. Bound in covers of sheets of handmade paper of cotton, flax, and abaca. Hand-bound in a long-stitch style with a wrap-around cover and a dyed leather spine.

This is the fourth annual collaborative artists' book created by graduate students in the Corcoran College of Art & Design. Reliquiae was created in the Fall of 2013 by Studio II Master's Degree candidates in the Art & the Book program under the guidance of Sarah McDermott. -- Reliquiae explores the phenomenon of the long-term preservation of the human body , and what these practices symbolize, express, and reveal about the societies in which they occur. Beginning with the idea of the body as a relic, the book then details modern embalming practices and examines seven extreme cases of preservation. Combining intriguing detail about the venerated body with imagery of the deceased, the book encourages the viewer to continue the discovery process."

Carrie Ann Plank: "The book is an edition of 100 with an artist proof for each student participant. The project was designed by myself and Macy Chadwick and printed with the help of students at the Academy of Art University as a demonstration for this year's SGC international conference. The entire edition was printed, die cut, and constructed in one day utilizing every press in our studios simultaneously. (It was intense!) Our goal was to help create a fundraiser for our students to attend the SGC international conference in 2015 and all proceeds from the sale of the book will directly fund the student participants." - See more at: http://vampandtramp.com/finepress/p/Carrie-Ann-Plank.html#sthash.TYOekkmY.dpuf

Ferraro, CariStar SpellProse and LettersSan Jose, CA200753French fold accordion book, printed and bound by artist. Pages digitally printed on both sides of Zerkall book paper with archival pigment inks. Background reproduced from a watercolor painting, on which the words STAR SPELL were lettered large in resist, and the paper then painted in layers of watercolor to reveal the words in the twilight sky background. Stars handpainted in iridescent ink on front cover and two interior pages. Text lettering reproduced from original calligraphy. Flyleaves of sheer Japanese unryu "cloud dragon paper" with silver and gold flecks. Book sewn into hand painted paper cover which wraps around, the front flap decorated with a star shape in the form of a fire invoking pentacle. Edition of 53, signed and numbered.
Deluxe edition (1 - 13): stars on front cover. Title and final pages laid with palladium leaf. Housed in a hand-painted slipcase.
Standard (14 - 53): Stars handpainted in iridescent ink on front cover and title page.

Cari Ferraro: "This book structure can be gently unfolded to see the large lettering on the painting in the background, and to find hidden words on the reverse near the binding. The last three images show the book in the beginning stages of unfolding; the next shows the entire flat page as it looks before cutting, folding and sewing, and the last shows the deluxe edition, with star gilded and silver painted white slipcase.

"A small magical book, using the familiar nursery rhyme, which fulfills the basic definition of a spell. The last page offers a haiku-like 17 syllable verse on the art of making magic, written by the artist. The old ways are often hidden in children’s fairy tales and rhymes, passed along in the manner of 'old wives’ tales.' Many such examples exist: see the books The Tao and Mother Goose by Robert Carter for an interesting examination of this theme, as well as The Uses of Enchantment by Bruno Bettelheim, and much of Joseph Campbell’s writing about mythology. ------
Limited ed. of 53 copies, signed by the artist; numbers 1-13 in the deluxe ed. and numbers 14-53 in the standard ed.

Borsuk, AmaranthSunt lacrimae rerumSeattle, WA201213Created in response to the bombing of Al-Mutanabbi Street, Baghdad’s street of booksellers, Sunt Lacrimae Rerum mourns the loss of both books and bodies. It takes its title from Aeneas’s words of sorrow uttered before a Carthaginian mural depicting the Trojan War. Tragedy must be brought home to us, but how can we relay the depths of loss—a very idea predicated on absence? This reliquary is part lachrymatory: it contains a book whose text of tears is designed to tear away at itself each time the book is displayed. Pleated into an accordion, it plays the elegy for its own effacement as, gradually, the cut-out letters catch on one another, pulling themselves up and off the page until they may fall away entirely. Not only is the book’s texture designed to transform, but its text does as well: page by page, one letter of the phrase changes at each turn. Although right now, “these are the tears of things,” over time we might enter a space “where all the tears embraced.”Al Mutanabbi

Raha, Bailey B.That Sometime Did Me SeekFairfield, CT20135That Sometime Did Me Seek is an adaptation of the eponymous writing of the late filmmaker Hollis Frampton. The text flow, images, and binding all work together to move the reader through the text as the story progresses, mimicking the pace and energy of the writing. A combination of silkscreen and inkjet printing methods were used.

mat board, BFK Rives, waxed linen thread, Iris book cloth

Bailey Raha is currently in her senior year at Mount Holyoke College where she is studying studio art. She is a narrative driven artist working at the crossroads of photography, printmaking, and book arts. Born and raised in historic Fairfield, Connecticut, she has always had a love of books and all stories spoken, written, and imagined.

Sidelinger, StephenThe Blue ScarabVenice, FL20111The scarab was in the grain of the wood waiting to be reincarnated in the coptic tradition with a Roycroft twist. 192 pages.

2 color of white paper with Roycoft leather on cover boards

Sidelinger has used distinctive Visual Language to investigate topics that range from common icons, to the complexities of the human condition. His media ranges from multiple gouache techniques on paper, to encaustic and embroidery. A devout follower of William Morris, he makes his images to grace people’s environments, to bring an intrigue of design and the enigmatic questions of fine art to their daily lives. He is an artist/ designer/ educator/ architectural colorist/textile artist/ embroiderer and book artist. Stephen draws on these vast and varied disciplines to create his one-of-a-kind, fine, hand bound books of contemporary illuminated manuscripts, which are in public and private collections throughout the world. His works have distinctive personal vocabulary or visual language.

Ferraro, CariThe First WritingProse and LettersSan Jose, CA200450Handmade accordion book in Lokta paper-covered case with bead and leather closure, gold painted accents. Reproduced from an original hand lettered and painted book. ----- Limited ed. of 50 copies, numbered and signed by the artist.
"In honor of the work of Marija Gimbutas"--Colophon.
Accordion-folded pages attached to front board. Cover is crumple-textured paper dyed to resemble old leather. Front cover has image of crescent moon in gold metallic ink. Text paper is a reproduction of the original one-of-a-kind paste-paper, patterned with metallic effect, white calligraphic text and black glyph-like imagery; includes some brush-work with metallic ink. Leather thong and bead closure.
Baylor has limited ed. copy 37/50, signed and dated by artist.

Cari Ferraro: "I was inspired to create this book by the work of archeologist Marija Gimbutas, whose theory was that the first writing actually predated Sumerian businessmen by a few thousand years, and instead grew out of symbolic marks on ritual objects made to venerate the Great Mother in Old Europe. The idea that writing came out of a spiritual place rather than a commercial one appeals to me as a calligrapher. I invented an alphabet style based on Marija's catalog of marks, and in the background of the paste paper used symbols found in the 5000-year-old passage grave Newgrange in Ireland, whose meaning has never been fully understood.

“ Though I wanted the book to open out to give a feeling of a cave wall, I also wanted to close, preferably by wrapping, so I made a case for it so that it opens like a regular codex, but with an accordion structure that can open out completely to see all the pages at once."

Horrigan, Terry/Ann MillerWhispersProtean PressSan Fransisco, CA200925Arches Paper. Collage. Side sewn. Laid in a black paper portfolio with tab slip closure. Title calligraphy by Ann Miller. Numbered on last page.

Terry Horrigan, colophon: "Many years ago a package arrived from China wrapped for protective purposes in layers of oriental paper written upon in kanji, a writing system for Japanese that uses pictorial characters based largely on Chinese ideograms. I was uncertain what the information on the papers meant but it was clear that it was ‘waste paper,’ not intended for any use other than packing. The markings on the papers fascinated me. I could not read them but their beauty led me to flatten and keep them for years. I had a sense that someone from another time was whispering to me.

"In 2004 a friend took some copies along with her on a trip to Japan for her brother to look at. His response: . . .most are completely unreadable. . .archaic language and writing styles. So in a sense you are safe to use them since no one else will be able to read them either. Some of the kanji may be Buddhist scripture, most likely in Chinese. Both Japanese and Chinese use forms of kanji.

"In 2009 I decided to use the papers in collaboration with Ann Miller, a local calligrapher and designer whose work I admire and whose skills I have used in many past projects. She used sumi and a Chinese rooster feather brush to make marks on Arches paper. I collaged the Chinese/Japanese papers on top of her marks and bound them into small booklets ... Each of the booklets is unique, both in Ann’s marks and in the scraps of the oriental papers."
