Workshop 3. Making the Leap, Phoenix Art Museum, Wednesday, March 28, 2012, 6 - 7:15 pm
The demands of creating a public art project can be overwhelming. Artists are often asked to deliver proposals using AutoCAD, submit material samples that demonstrate maintainability, create plan layouts to enhance their work, design a lighting scheme to highlight the art, and engineer works to withstand the fiercest elements imaginable. This is a pretty tall order when you’re background is in studio art. How does an artist move from the studio into the public?  What are some key tips to maintaining a studio practice while working on public projects? And what does it mean to be an “emerging” artist anyway?

In this workshop, we’ll address the issue of moving your studio practice into the public. Using examples of artists who’ve made the leap and who continue to maintain an active studio practice, this workshop will focus on strategies for getting a commission, working with a large space, team building and the “learn as you go” process that is public art.

Staff from the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture’s Public Art Program, Metro Lightrail, and Tempe Public Art will also be on hand to answer questions about the process of public art.

Workshop 4. For Tucson Artists and Beyond, Tucson Pima Arts Council,  Wednesday,  April 18, 2012, 6 - 7:15 pm
TPAC’s Public Art Roster offers an entry point into public commissions; artists are often selected from the Roster for projects with budgets under $50,000 without the publication of project-specific Call to Artists. This workshop provides an overview of recent projects where artists were selected from the Roster, presents successes and challenges experienced by the artists, and reviews the Public Art Roster application process.

Topics to be discussed include:
+Overview of temporary vs. permanent public art
+Best practices in temporary public art
+Emerging artist outreach & support-- What is an RFQ/RFP and how do I find out about calls to artists?
+First-hand account of an AZ artist's experience creating a storefront artwork as part of the IN FLUX initiative
+Brief individual consultations with project managers Kirstin Van Cleef & Maja Aurora from 7:15pm-8:00pm.
