Welcome to the Social Sciences Professional Internship Program at the University of California, Irvine. Identified as one of the top undergraduate schools in the education system, UCI has been noted for its analytical training, writing preparation, and research opportunities. A student driven unit in the Social Sciences, the Social Science Academic Resource Center (SSARC) is an educational center that will provide you the opportunity to aid UCI students in further developing their academic and professional skills, allowing them to acquire experience within the workforce while assisting them in providing vital support to the community.
The SSARC serves over 4,000 students in an academic year and also collaborates with other campus units to fulfill our mission of providing top quality academic services to the UCI undergraduate community. The SSARC provides the opportunity for students to apply to intern in the local community and receive academic credit, conduct research, learn about scholarships, and learn from our many professional and academic workshops.
The School of Social Sciences actively supports service learning through its philosophy of enhancing the educational process by motivating, inspiring, and teaching students how to recognize and accept their civic responsibilities. Service learning is a meaningful activity that integrates service with curriculum. It provides out-of-class experiences to reinforce the understanding of academic theory while addressing serious community concerns. Service learning aims to educate students about social issues and provide them with the necessary tools to solve the difficult problems society faces. Under the guidance and supervision of faculty and staff, students are offered the opportunity to experience personal, professional, social, and intellectual growth.
One of the more unique programs offered by the SSARC is the internship program, which provides the opportunity for students to attain academic credit for their service to both private and public sectors. Students can receive either two (50 hours) or four units (100 hours) of Pass/No Pass credit per quarter. However, if students opt for academic credit, no salary, wages, or monetary compensation may be received for services rendered to the interning agency. Furthermore, a prerequisite for the partnership with the internship agency is that the internship duties not exceed 40% of clerical activity; agencies must provide a signed document highlighting these duties to ensure a quality experience.
