Introduction
It is 1980 and you are Enrique, an eighteen year old boy living in a small outer village in Guatemala. You and your family are of Mayan descent. Because your family is poor and indigenous, your family is not allowed to own land. Your father does his best to provide for your family by working as a field laborer for a rich landowner. You also work with your father and many of the other young men in your community in the fields, being treated poorly and threatened with violence by the landowners. The government is very corrupt. Both the government and the Army support the rich landowners.
Your father and several other men working in the fields have decided to form a rebellion group. Your father does not want you and your younger sister to have to live like this anymore. They have heard of other villages around Guatemala coming together to form guerrilla forces in attempts to rise up against the corruption and demand change. Right now these meetings are taking place in secret because there could be violence.
At 7:00 PM, your father excuses himself from the dinner table and heads out to what you believe is a secret meeting of the rebels.
