In conjunction with the Environmental Sustainability efforts here at Miami-Dade College, the Earth Ethics Institute has created the Sustainability and Resiliency Challenge in order to foster values of global citizenship, ecological sustainability, and civic engagement.

We ask employees and students to participate!

Commit to three or more challenges in any of the impact areas below! By committing to these challenges you will help contribute to a more sustainable future at MDC and across the globe, as well as further your own knowledge. Some challenges are easier than others, but every one helps and many have the added benefit of being financially friendly!

Become Part of the Solution!

Water Conservation:

I will save up to (8) gallons of water each day by turning off the faucet when brushing my teeth.

I will start a compost pile and refrain from using the sink disposal.

I will save up to (20) gallons of water each day by taking 5 minute showers.

I will invest in water saving appliances like shower heads, faucets, toilets, dishwashers and washing machines.

Energy Efficiency:

I will replace my incandescent light bulbs with an Energy Star certified LED bulb to save energy.

I will turn my home and/or office thermostat up 3 degrees when I’m using air conditioning.

I will always turn off the lights when I don’t need them. It seems pretty basic, but I pledge to remember to do this in conference rooms, bathrooms, etc. too.

I’ll unplug appliances and electronics when I’m not using them, because many will still draw electricity even when they are turned off. Even better I’ll connect multiple appliances (computers, printers, toasters, coffee makers, etc.) to a power strip I can turn off.

I’ll disable screen savers -- they use 28% more energy; I will put the computer to sleep instead.

Sustainable Food Options:

I will cut my food waste by planning a weekly menu, and only buying the ingredients I need.

I’ll purchase meat and produce from the farmers market.

I will watch a documentary film about food with friends and get them involved too (some suggestions include: Food Inc., The Future of Food, Supersize Me, and King Corn).

I will choose sustainable seafood options. (info at http://www.seafoodwatch.org/seafood-recommendations)

Alternative Transportation:

I will bike or walk for trips within 1 mile.

I will Use Get2MDC alternative transportation website to explore carpooling, biking and mass transit (Get2mdc.com - alternatives to car transportation to get to the college - and carpool information)

I pledge to minimize my car trips by “chaining” together errands instead of making separate trips.

Trash Reduction:

I will save paper by switching from one-sided to two-sided printing.

I will bring my own water bottles, reusable mug/thermos and grocery bags when I’m on the go and stop purchasing bottled water.

I pledge to adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach to making unnecessary purchases.

I will recycle whenever possible.

Civic/Global Engagement:

I will volunteer in my community.

I will connect with my local nonprofits working in issues I care about and see how I can get involved.

I pledge to minimize my car trips by “chaining” together errands instead of making separate trips.

I will sign a petition in support of a sustainability initiative I support in my state.

I will make a point to use only fair trade coffee and chocolate products.

Whenever possible, I will support local businesses or fair trade organizations such as tenthousandvilliages.com.

I will choose beauty/health products that have not been tested on animals and that are free of harmful chemicals and toxins (info at http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/)

I will get a credit card with a responsible bank or credit union that does not support big coal, politics, or treat its customers poorly like many megabanks currently do. (You can see how your bank measures up at http://www.greenamerica.org/take-charge-of-your-card/banking-scorecards.cfm!)
