18/07/2012 23:29:59Free + low cost music softwareChris Mason-Battleyhttp://www.musictech.co.nzMixcraft 6 - PC platform equivalent to Garageband: loop based composing, software instruments, real audio recording, video editing.
Very easy to use - affordable (eg: 5 licences for $250)

Garageband - free with your Mac. Awesome softeware!
Needs more loops and instruments. Get them at a good price by buying Mainstage from the App store. It comes with several GB of loops and instruments (all the same ones that come with Logic Pro) You can get educational volume licence discounts from Apple NZ.

Tuxguitar - open source guitar tab editor. Similar to Guitar Pro. Reads and saves in the same file format. Mac/Windows/Linux

Musescore - open source notation software. Mac/Windows/Linux

Sibelius First - great 'light' version of Sibelius. Good set of features at a cheaper price than the full version.

www.musictech.co.nz - education music technology blog + resources, NZ distributor for Mixcraft.
