Collaboration is the new competitionHarvard Business Review article:
"Leaders and organizations are acknowledging that even their best individual efforts can't stack up against today's complex and interconnected problems. They are putting aside self-interests and collaborating to build a new civic infrastructure to advance their shared objectives. It's called collective impact and it's a growing trend..."

VMemesSpiral Dynamics argues that human nature is not fixed: humans are able, when forced by life conditions, to adapt to their environment by constructing new, more complex, conceptual models of the world that allow them to handle the new problems.[1] Each new model transcends and includes all previous models. According to Beck and Cowan, these conceptual models are organized around so-called vMemes: systems of core values or collective intelligences, applicable to both individuals and entire cultures.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiral_DynamicsNeil

Industry Transformation SummitSupporting leadership for Hubbers:

The primary aim of this event is to support your (1) big-picture leadership and business growth from the 'old economy' to the emerging 'new economy'. i.e. The transformation from our current systems to an interconnected digital, globalised, post-GFC, environmentally- and socially-sustainable economy. The secondary aim is to support your (2) development of your business case for sustainability through grounded examples and case studies. For example, t *tonighthere has been a lot of interest around Food and Community Gardens as a topic for a case study project.

Wearable technology and ways of workingI am thinking about how changes in technology, including wearable tech, will influence collaboration and space aspects of The Hub (among other things).
Technology is evolving us, says Amber Case, as we become a screen-staring, button-clicking new version of homo sapiens. We now rely on "external brains" (cell phones and computers) to communicate, remember, even live out secondary lives. But will these machines ultimately connect or conquer us? Case offers surprising insight into our cyborg selves.

What does leadership look like at Hub?What is needed to cultivate new kinds of leadership?

Helen: I am wondering therefore: what is leadership in a Hub context? Who is a
leader at Hub? What defines a Hub leader? What do we do in/at Hub to
intentionally cultivate leaders and good leadership?
Management is (still) not leadership

What other expertise do we need to connect to through Hub to facilitate entrepreneurial networking?
“The Nightingale Ratio as the number of people helping others do something
to the number of people actually doing that thing. In this case, the
number of people helping entrepreneurs start something relative to the
number of entrepreneurs actually starting something.”

Helen:
I am wondering: Is Hub attracting (or appealing to) the kind of practical
business expertise that helps entrepreneurs? Accountants, Lawyers,
Bookkeepers. Do these people want to be part of a different way of doing
things?

Four scenariosHere are my first thoughts after navigating the Hub Ethos Prezzi ...
(1) How will Hub values change? - I use a vMeme Axis to illustrate possibilities here ...
(2) How will Hub amplify impact? - I use an UP Axis (StartUP to UPScale) to illustrate possibilities here ...

So here is a picture of four possible scenario spaces ...

[A] 'MicroHub' (this is where I see Hub at present)
[B] 'CommercialHub' (this is a trajectory I sense Hub moving towards)
[C] 'CatalyzerHub' (startup driven by connection to the wider-system)
[D] 'GenerativeHub' (scaling impact via generative learning)

Generative ListeningGenerative Listening by Peter Senge

To listen fully means to pay close attention to what is being said beneath the words. You listen not only to the 'music,' but to the essence of the person speaking. You listen not only for what someone knows, but for what he or she is. Ears operate at the speed of sound, which is far slower than the speed of light the eyes take in. Generative listening is the art of developing deeper silences in yourself, so you can slow your mind’s hearing to your ears’ natural speed, and hear beneath the words to their meaning.

Tony's storyTony Smith:

I've focused on one big lesson on how counterproductive lazy policy can be: generally well-intended people doing what they could do rather than what they should do, with consequences made all the more glaring with hindsight.

The real battle for the future is whether we can manage to keep stuffing things up quicker than we are able to comprehend/fix them. Jury still out. That largely defines #hubfutures challenge.

Hubbers in/and AsiaAs part the Hub Futures exploration, I'd like to start evaluating how much of Hubbers’ business and activity is connected to Asia. I’m hovering around various Asia and China circles, and hearing a lot about the growing importance of ‘the region’ for Australia – but also what of a challenge this is. I’d like to understand whether this is also the case for Hub, and to what extent. Are we further ahead than other organisations in engaging with Asia? Is our focus mostly local and ‘Australian’? Or are we mostly part of US-Euro networks, and working on Euro-US models and assumptions?
As a first step, I’m #seeking Hubbers willing to have a short 15 minute interview with me. This will also be a good opportunity to meet some of you :-). I’m #offering a cup of nice Chinese tea to all participants.

Hub ownershipI see member ownership (including ownership over management) key to Hub's healthy future. If members have buy-in (in a real sense) they will be more loyal and will put in a lot more. So the story would be a transition in ownership and control and financial rewards for the initial investors which would then lead to a more passionate and engaged membership. This in turn will accelrate the growth and open up the possibilities...Yammer threadGlenn T

Kevin Kelly - What Technology Wants "time is not rigidly separated into work and non-work; intensive work periods are
followed by extensive leave taking, the latter necessary for intellectual and creative
renewal; there is a logic of self-unfolding at work, workers look for projects at which
they feel energized and that expands their learning and experience in desired directions;
participation is voluntary; learning is informal and continuous; the value of pleasure and play are crucial; the project has to have social value and be of use to a wider community;there is total transparency, no secrets; there is an ethic that values activity and caring;
creativity, the continuous surpassing of oneself in solving problems and creating new use value, is paramount."

The stages of entrepreneruship#hubfutures ... further to my scenario spaces picture I think this theory of the stages of entrepreneurship may also inform our scenario thinking ... Semantic analysis of Hub Ethos After reading through the 'Hub Ethos', I've conducted a little exercise in semantic analysis: I produced two sets of opposite values, one 'negative', and one 'positive', in order to better identify the meaning of Hub values.

I think understanding 'what Hub is' requires not only to articulate core values, but also identify what Hub is not - this is the goal of the exercise - gain some depth of understanding.

9 new scenariosExploring macro scenarios around Hub's "vantage point of unique wicked mixes of talent"

... a number of micro scenarios emerging within a macro frame ... all linked by the notion of scaling ...

... one Axis of scaling involves 'talent maps' that span 1st, 2nd, and 3rd spaces ... notice how depth lies within span ...

... a 2nd Axis of scale involves diversity ... notice how catalyzing agency lies within clusters of diversity ...

.. a 3rd Axis of scale is animation ... animating and re-animating experiences of ways of being and doing ...

... so 3 axes of scale (maps, diversity, animation) provide up to 9 micro scenarios to explore ...

The third wave of virtual work"In three major waves of change over the past 30 years, employers and workers have converged on new arrangements for getting knowledge work done. First, home computers and e-mail spawned an army of freelancers, offering both workers and employers new flexibility. Next, mobile technology and global teamwork gave the same kind of work-anywhere, work-anytime flexibility to full-time employees, without asking them to forsake career progress and development within their companies. Now, in a third wave, new ways of providing community and shared space are curing a side effect of virtualization—worker isolation—and driving increased collaboration."http://hbr.org/2013/01/the-third-wave-of-virtual-work/Caroline
