What I fell in love with then, and what still drives me now, is the concept of storytelling -- of leading readers (or users or whatever you choose to call people) through information in a way that is compelling and meaningful. What I loved about journalism, at least in my program, was that it also wasn't all about creative writing or all about "the news" (though both valid in their own right). It was also about designing structures that support the stories you want to tell, and tinking about hierarchies and relationships between information. I think that this, combined with the general critical thinking/close reading/analysis components of traditional liberal arts and sciences programs -- and frankly, even the way foreign language changes your perspective on commuication and written structures -- really set me up with the skill set to think strategically about content, long before I worked on my first content-rich web project.

Whew. Good question.
A fair amountCopywriterOMG...soooo different. Will try to keep this one short, though.

In the past five years, I moved from a more traditional ad agency to a digitally focused one (that was over four years ago), then moved up the ranks from a web writer to a content strategy lead (made that title up a couple years ago), and then became the director of content and marketing strategy (since November). Now I oversee all content strategy during both web development and ongoing strategic support for clients, as well as tactical executions that I see as content-related, including social media, email/loyalty campaigns, etc. The result of all this change is that I am routinely involved in both large-scale strategy discussions, as well as leading the charge on designing complex structures for content -- like sitemapping, content modeling, segmented messaging, etc.

With the explosion of mobile and with clients finally starting to come to grips with the fact that their web sites are not brochures, there is a great deal more insight going into what we've been doing.

I'm also not as deep into the code as I used to be. When I was "Web Editor" that meant I built the site, built the CMS, organized all of the writers and was the one who posted everything to the site and was the first one to get beaten up when something broke. That meant I was responsible for up to 60 updates a week, four weekly e-mail newsletters and the building and maintenance of dozens of micro or sister sites.

Now, I'm called on to work more in the realm of fixing bigger content problems, helping companies become publishers and teaching them the benefits of being more user-centric.
Not very muchReporterTen years ago I was getting my start in newspapers and playing on the web as part of my hobby. I was in bands, and started playing with HTML to help publicize our performances. I was blogging, coding and starting to dip my toes into CSS. I wasn't doing content strategy yet, but I was learning why it was necessary. I'd love to see a forecasting question. Where do you see your skills being needed in two to five years. I understand tech is moving VERY quickly, but I'm already seeing requests for CS for apps, mobile sites and even one company that has approached me for CS for outdoor digital signage.

I'd be interested to see the rest of the industry take on that question.

Shortly thereafter, I moved to the website as the organization's first web editor. The organization had 20,000+ pages but no CMS or web governance. My job quickly moved into leading the content audit & content migration into a new CMS; serving as point person for information architecture work along with a vendor brought in to do the heavy lifting; content lead for a new search engine and new e-commerce/identity management system; and project manager for the content side. I'm a consultant now for this organization, and although it's come along way in terms of web governance, there is still a long way to go in terms of planning for the content life cycle, gap analysis, and continuing to fight back against siloed content. On the IT side, there's been a marked increase in collaboration between developers, visual designers, content editors and IAs. Five years ago, IT would have put things into production without anybody but a developer or PM reviewing it. Despite being an airy-fairy liberal art ;-) my English major really is where I learned to find information, read and analyze it critically, imagine seeing things from a variety of points of view, and develop persuasive arguments from my analysis--that's pretty much what marketing and business communication in general is all about. A fair amountFreelance marketing/copy writing/web developmentMy responsibilities haven't changed much since I've been an underemployed work-from-home mom for more than 5 years, and helping my partner with another small business for longer than that. However, my responsibilities have changed from my corporate employment. My official titles were Marketing Manager and related things, but a lot of what I did was very similar to content strategy, but not restricted to the web. Finding and interpreting research, crafting persuasive copy from it, keeping track of what needed updating when and so on. As a freelancer I'm more of a jack of all trades but if I could specialize I would focus on content. A fair amountMarketing Communications ManagerApparently I radiate harmlessness, since can *always* get past security, it's lucky I haven't used my powers for evil!

My responsibilities and competencies have changed. I am much more knowledgeable in web technology and trends such as social media an open-source communities. I am responsible for entire (small) sites rather than handing off content to others for implementation. I am looking to transition more into nonprofit rather than commercial organizations.

I'm no longer responsible for promoting a specific product or service, nor doing much with print or other offline media.
I'm interested in how different paths into CS match up to different sub-disciplines within CS - is doing CS in agencies very different from doing it in-house and that sort of thing. Where is a marketing background vs and advertising background vs an editorial background most useful? What kinds of organizations or gigs are the best fits for my skill set? Et cetera.

I've gone from barely being aware of what accessibility is to being an authority on it for not only my governmental agency but also others in my state and a few federal agencies. I've been teaching content creators how to use their software to create accessible information, forms, and Web applications. I've participated in the development of an open-source content management system, especially with regard to making it more accessible to use and more capable of being used to produce accessible content. I've redesigned the user interface for Word to better support the creation of accessible documents. And I've started learning advanced techniques in CSS (through and including CSS3) so I can quickly offer viable alternatives to the table-based Web-page formats my boss insists on having our designers churn out. (She does support accessibility, except when it interferes with her getting what she wants right away. But I digress.) A great dealPublishing coordinatorYes, but my being allowed past security has more to do with 9/11 than with professional development. (Until then, we didn't have security. Now, we have not only a security guard in the lobby but three rubber traffic cones that you'd have to run over first if you wanted to drive into our building. Well, I guess that, unless your car or truck was really wide, you'd actually have to run over only one of them, but, still, they would make a terrorist think twice before trying that!) Still, I've developed quite a bit professionally. At that time, I was just starting out in Web development in earnest after 10–15 years in teaching and technical editing. Inspired mainly by Ginny Redish and Bill Horton, 10 years ago I was using content strategy to redevelop Web pages and applications while everyone around me was wondering why I was spending so much time with whiteboards, Post-Its with thumbnails of pages glued to them, huge sheets of newsprint, and colored strings to represent links between related content. Why wasn't I just cranking out the pages? Of course, I didn't call it content strategy until I read Kristina Halvorson's book last year, went through the motions of doing a content audit, and realized I was mostly going through the same steps I had taken on my own 10 years ago. In the meantime, I've also learned much more about usability assessment and user-centered design. And then, of course, accessibility, as mentioned above. What, if anything, have you done to strengthen (or broaden) your professional background? What, if anything, have you done to strengthen your professional network?

Especially in the last 5 years, I've been attending webinars regularly, going to conferences (UPA, SxSW), going to unconferences (DrupalCamp, AccessCamp), and joining professional groups online (Google groups, LinkedIn, and Twitter). When my employer won't pay for training, which is almost always, I've paid my own way, if I felt that particular event was essential to my professional development. And I've participated in chats and other online conversations as much as I can.

Also, much more client-specific industry research involved in my day-to-day work, as more organizations are interested in thought leadership-oriented content and they're demanding fresh ideas for developing, managing and distributing that content.
Not very muchStaff reporterIn a small sense my competencies remain very similar, in that as a reporter 10 years ago, I observed, listened, asked questions and retold stories. Now, as a freelance business writer, I observe, listen and ask questions to help clients strategically reposition their stories. Listening and asking the right questions remains as critical as ever.

Now, however, every possible angle/sensitivity must be at least considered and collaboration is essential to success.
