Students identify trends and forecast possibilities.Teacher Centered: Before initially having the students begin the online activity, using the website where they will interact with a compound words, introduce common compound words found in the classroom (i.e. textbook, bookshelf, etc.) in order to allow students to familiarize themselves with what they need to know, that compound words consist of two pre-exisitng words that join together to create a new meaning.PowerPoint Presentation with pictures of each word that combine to create a compound word, illustrating how each word joins with another word to make a compound word.

Teacher Centered: Discuss with the students each of the compound words they encountered during the activity, and then brainstorm to see how many other compound words they can think of on their own or discover within the classroom (i.e. whiteboard, blackboard,etc.).

This activity requires students to divide the compound words into their original small words. Call students up one at a time to have them divide a compound word. Each time you play, you’ll get a different set of compound words, so everyone can have a turn.

L.2.4.5 Use glossaries and beginning dictionaries, both print and digital, to determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases.Student Centered: Allow students to be able to access a dictionary to find the meanings of words that contribute to a compound word. Also, have students look in dictionary to help them understand that not all parts of compound words contain the same meaning when combined with another word to form a compound word (i.e. butterfly - butter in this sense is not used in the same context as the food).
