6/18/20122 hours and 30 minutesI showed up at the Baldwin Park Police Department for my first day as an applicant to the Police Explorer Post # 654. I was required to come dressed in business attire and would continue to wear the same business attire for all my Post meetings. During this first meeting I was taught the basics of marching, attention, and facing movements (turning in place) by several Explorer members of the Post while I was introduced to Post advisors in charge of the program for Baldwin Park. By the end of the day I felt I had received a large amount of information I was going to have to process. I was advised to report next Monday shaved and with the proper haircut for my second meeting. 2 hours and 30 minutesSummer Mentorship

6/25/20124 hours and 30 minutesI reported for my second post meeting at the Baldwin Park Police Department and mingled with the other applicants who will be accompanying me when I attend the Police Explorer Academy in September, which upon completion I will become an official Police Explorer for Post # 654. The first half of this meeting was devoted to practicing our marching and drill. While we the applicants learned the basics, the Explorers of the post were training for a countywide competition in Pasadena amongst all Police Explorer posts. The other half of the meeting was focused on practicing police scenarios, in particular High Risk Traffic Stops. The applicants would pose as suspects while the Explorers would practice the procedures for handling a traffic stop where the suspect is considered armed and dangerous. To start getting us more involved in the post and to prepare us for the academy, the roles were switched at the end so that the applicants could practice. The day was finished with a debriefing inside the police station.7 hoursIndependent Componenet 1

7/9/20124 hours and 30 minutesThe third post meeting went practically the same as the previous meeting where half was marching and drill and the other half consisted of practicing a scenario. Today the scenario we practiced was a 4-15 (report of a disturbance) and a 2-73 D (domestic violence). We practiced in a similar manner to last time where the applicants were the suspects and the Explorers responded to the call. To make things more realistic for the Explorers, we were ordered to act in very unruly ways similar to how real disputes occur in the field while also concealing different practice weapons on our persons that the Explorers would have to find when they searched us. The day ended with a debriefing where we were ordered to start acquiring the gear we would need for the academy, in particular our boots and the materials to polish and shine them. 11 hours and 30 minutesIndependent Componenet 2

7/16/20124 hours and 30 minutesToday was the first day I reported in my PT (physical training) gear rather that the usual business attire. We were still required to carry our full business entire in a bag incase we were to do an inspection and switch into uniform. We also received more people wishing to join the post and so we the applicants practiced the basics with them during our drill time. The scenarios today consisted of half the Explorer class doing more domestic violence cases while the others practiced their DUI procedure with Detective Alveraz. At the end of the day we received the paperwork we would need to complete to apply to the Explorer Post and the Explorer Academy, which consisted of thorough background check and application papers. 16 hours

7/23/20124 hours and 30 minutesAs the days go by, more and more PT is added to our daily schedule as it’s stressed to us that officers in the field need to be prepared to overcome many obstacles and sometimes those obstacles include suspects who can be 50 to 100 pounds more than you. After marching and watching the Explorers drill to get a taste of what we can strive to accomplish in the coming months, we moved on to the main scenario for the day which was High Risk Traffic Stops. This time during one of the practice sessions, one of the suspects wasn’t properly searched and managed to pull a practice gun on the unsuspecting Explorers responding to the call. During the debriefing that night, the Post Advisors played several actual police footage videos where improper and incomplete searches led to suspects pulling out firearms and getting the fatal drop on officers in the field. If there is one thing the Post Advisors wanted for us to take home that night it was the understanding that fellow officers around you trust that you have their back and that we have a responsibility to repay that trust with the utmost effort we can put in to protecting them. 20 hours and 30 minutes
8
7/30/20124 hours and 30 minutesThe Explorers continue to practice their drill routine for the upcoming competition while the applicants learn to do column marching. To allow some applicants to practice their leadership, some of us are appointed to lead the march by calling out the cadence (the chants sang during marching that serve to help keep troops in step with one another) and the different marching orders. For today’s scenario we practiced active shooter which is where there is a armed suspect currently still active in the area and considered extremely hostile. A member of the Baldwin Park S.W.A.T. team came to speak to us about the different tactics and approaches used when dealing with an active shooter case. The day was concluded with a debriefing in the police station.25 hours

8/6/20124 hours and 30 minutesBy this meeting, most of the applicants have acquired all the gear we would need when we attended the academy in September. Once our drill was complete for the day, we went on to practice more domestic dispute scenarios. Since the scenarios are based on real life scenarios the Post Advisors face during their daily encounters as officers or dispatchers, no two scenarios are the same. This works to help the Explorers keep an open and creative mind to approaching the situation and to prepare them for this scenario during the competition which no information will be disclosed about until it happens. More active shooter scenarios were also practiced this day, with the applicants acting as the suspects. 29 hours and 30 minutes
10
8/10/20121 hourNow that we had acquired our boots we were also going to have to learn how to shine them and have them prepared for each meeting. A few of the explorers took some time out of their daily routines to come show us the techniques they used to keep their boots polished during their time at the academy.30 hours and 30 minutes
11
8/13/20124 hours and 30 minutesSince this was the last official meeting before the competition, the Explorers went all out to train on their drill while we observed. Afterwards I had my first uniform check with all my gear. The Explorers explained that having a clean uniform not only looks nice and shows professionalism, it also teaches responsibility to take care of something that is your own. The rest of the day was committed to practicing the domestic dispute and active shooter scenarios. 35 hours

8/19/20125 hoursDay 2 of the 2 day Explorer competition in Pasadena was intense. I was unable to make it to the 1st day but the Explorers told me that all the scenarios had been made as real as possible by the people running the competition by having professional actors and real props and blood in the events. The second day’s main event was the drill competition amongst all the Posts which two marines presided over. The day finished with an award ceremony where our Post took home over 7 different trophies for all their accomplishments in the scenario events. To celebrate the event the Post Advisors took us all out to eat. 40 hours
13
8/27/20124 hours and 30 minutesWe were given the previous Monday off to allow everyone to rest from the weekend and now that the competition was over we were going to switch to the every other Monday schedule for our meetings. Since we no longer needed to practice scenarios, the entire day was devoted to an intense PT session. One of the workouts was a 30 yard sprint between two people where the loser has to try and wrestle the other down at the end or do a set of push ups. Most of us were so tired that a few ended up throwing up by the end of the workouts. The Post Advisors drilled the idea that “You quit, you die” into us while we worked out and explained that for those of us going into law enforcement or the military there are going to be times when we feel even more tired than we did at that moment but that we have to keep pushing ourselves beyond our limits. We finished the day by coming into the station to debrief and to our surprise the entire department saved up money to throw a party for the Explorers achievements at the competition. Most of us were too tired to eat but the fact that the entire station went out of its way to show appreciation for the Post meant a lot for everyone. 44 hours and 30 minutes

9/10/20124 hoursThis was the first meeting back since school has started. We did more physical training today as we, the recruits, prepared for our first upcoming day of the Sheriff's Training and Regional Services (STARS) Center Explorer Academy on 9/27/2012. Many of us are a bit worried as we are not sure what to expect but we believe we will be able to get through it. 4 hours

9/15/20123 hoursToday was registration day for the academy. We turned in all our forms and they gave us the time we would need to show up next Saturday.3 hours

9/22/201211 hoursToday was a day of days. It was nothing short of the hardest day of my entire life. We arrived in our professional business attire for the first day of the academy and were lined up outside the academy fence. I had to be there at 6:00 A.M. in the morning meaning I was up since 4:00. We walked onto the campus for the first time and entered the gym. It turns our that the STARS center is located on a former high school. We were given a briefing and then lined up into our "platoons", which were to be our groups for the next 18 weeks of the academy. I was assigned into 2nd platoon. Our drill instructors were then called to enter the gym and they stood at the position of attention at each of their respective platoons. All seemed to be well until they were given the command to "inspect" their platoons. At that moment, 20 drill instructors came running at us, yelling at us, and telling us to do push ups, jumping jacks, squats, sit ups, duck walks, and more. This lasted for more than an hour. It seemed like a scene out of the movie Full Metal Jacket. After this we were taken to the class room and given our gear and materials we would need for the academy. We were given the rules of the academy, a bit of a background, and our future assignments. We had our lunch in silence for many of us were either too tired or too afraid to talk. At the end of the day we were marched out to the front and dismissed until our next Saturday meeting.11 hours
17
9/24/20124 hoursAt this meeting for the Post, we did some physical training and went over some scenarios. We were given word of the next competition we might go to located in Chandler, Arizona. I was still sore from Saturday's beat down but I was happy I could pull through it.4 hours

9/29/201211 hoursToday was my 2nd week at the academy. This Saturday we had to show up at 6:30 instead of 6:00 A.M. but still got held out longer at the end so it was the same amount of hours spent there. We had a morning inspection which was pretty tense as the smallest mistake in our professional attire meant we had to do PT (Physical training). We had our first test today on safety at the academy. We also had our first notes on the History of Law Enforcement. We were dismissed the same way we were as last Saturday. 11 hours
19
10/8/20124 hoursThis week at my Post meeting we practiced even more scenarios, but this time we recruits in the academy got to take a more active part in them than usual. Today we also had more physical training. I am still a bit bummed out that I missed the academy on the previous Saturday for the SATs but I am starting to look foward to academy days. We welcomed a few new applicants to the Post today.4 hours

10/13/201211 hoursWeek #3 at the academy was today. We were allowed to arrive for the first time in our uniforms. Even though we havent received our badges yet, it felt pretty awesome to be wearing the uniform of our agency. We received out physical training clothes and gear today and went on our first run today. It was around the academy and the surrounding blocks of Whittier and I was pretty tired at the end. The lecture we received today was on an Introduction to Criminal Law. It was pretty interesting as we learned about all the crimes and penal codes officers need to know to determine if someone is breaking the law. I took my first set of tests today and made up the ones I missed last week as well. We marched out of the academy today in the fashion we have been for the past weeks. 11 hours
21
10/17/20124 hoursIn anticipation of the upcoming competition we were now scheduled to go to, we practiced more unique and different scenarios this week at the post. We also shifted from a Monday meeting schedule to a every Wednesday schedule to accomodate the new Post advisors we received. I am excited to know that I might be able to go to the competition if I graduate in time.4 hours

10/20/201211 hoursWeek # 4 at the academy and similar to last Saturday, we did much more running. This was all in preparation of the upcoming "Colors Run" event we were going to undergo as part of the traditions of the academy. I can feel myself getting stronger already but I hope I will be ready for the 4 mile run on the beach that is the Colors Run. Today we had 3 lectures instead of the usual one, with the 1st being on the Laws of Arrest and the procedures police have to obey to arrest someone. We also had a lesson on the 7 Habits book and another on proper radio procedure. I was pretty tired from all the writing by the end and was happy to go home. 11 hours

24
10/27/201211 hoursWeek # 5 at the academy and yet more morning running in preparation for the Colors Run. Today we had a more expanded lesson on the 7 Habits book. The reason why this lesson is included is because the program is meant to make us better individuals, not make us into junior cops. Thus, they want to teach us the good habits of an effective person, which will be useful for us all throughout life. 11 hours

11/3/201211 hoursWeek # 6 at the academy. More and more running as we draw closer to the Colors Run. Today was very interesting, for after we showered and changed into our uniform, we had a hands on lesson on CPR. The lesson was comprised of a lecture teaching us the basics of first aid and a hands on section where we actually got to perform CPR on a test dummy. Today was pretty informative and I felt I greatly benefited from it.11 hours

11/17/201211 hoursThe Colors Run was today! It was amazing! When we arrived at the academy, we were given a briefing of the Colors Run and why it is a tradition. The Colors Run signifies when we have reached the halfway point in our training and its a run in formation that we must all complete together. It was 4 miles on the beach at Long Beach. 2 of the miles were on the sand and 2 were in the water. We we're so motivated and pumped up that it felt like nothing. We also had a fun lecture on Illegal Narcotics by a member of the Sheriff's special drug enforcment team. All in all, today was honestly one of the best days of my life. 11 hours

12/6/20125 hoursOn Thursday, December 6th, I worked my first detail at the Baldwin Park Teen Center. It was a Christmas toy drive for underprivileged children between the ages of 3 and 14. My duties included setting up, working the game booths, directing traffic, and taking down the event. It was a lot of fun to help out and seeing all the smiles on the children's faces would have made anyone happy.5 hours
37
12/8/201211 hoursOn Saturday, December 8th, my academy class went to the L.A. County's Sheriff's Range in Valencia for a private lecture, demonstration, and opportunity to fire the department's weapons. While I am not at liberty to disclose the full details of what went on, I can say that it was definitely a fun experience. We were able to take home the brass and shells of the shots we fired. At the end of the day, I was informed that I was to be the next class sergeant for my academy class. 11 hours

12/15/201211 hoursNow in the 13th week of the academy, I am close to graduation. We had another lesson of defensive tactics today again. Today's lecture was conducted by a CHP officer on traffic and safe driving. Today's lecture was pretty grim as we were shown videos and images of car accidents that resulted from unsafe driving but the message struck many, if not all of us. 11 hours

I am so estatic that I have made it to this day, as there are no more lectures or assignments that we have to do. The rest of the weeks are devoted to Family Day (a sort of open house for our parents), Graduation Rehershal and Graduation. I am almost there.11 hours
42
1/1/20135 hoursOn Wednesday, January 1st, I got to work my 2nd official detail as an Explorer at the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl. My post was assigned to traffic duty, where we basically were each given a street to manage and keep traffic moving and allowing pedestrians to cross as they moved from the parade and to the game.5 hours

Unfortunately, I am not at liberity to discuss what we did in full detail. What I can tell you though is that we are less than 3 weeks away from competition and I am excited to know that I will be able to go. The competition weekend also cuts into my graduation, so I am going to graduate first and miss the 1st day of competition and then drive up with my fellow graduated explorers to Chandler, Arizona.4 hours

There were various competitions ranging from obstacle courses to seeing how can complete different scenarios the best and fastest. Our post took home quite a few trophies, and it was amazing to see so many people from around the country here.12 hours
