| 11/7/2011 14:34:25 | 2 years | Not my thing. | Too long | Yummy! | Meditation session was awkward and inappropriate. Something that might be included in an "extra" outside-hours session, not as part of the conference itself. It was launched into without any context or relevance. Dangerously close to a religious/spiritual session which is not right especially given ETUG/BCcampus is a secular, publicly-funded organization. | Evernote: very hands-on presentation of a tool and its potential.
| 11/7/2011 14:37:37 | 5+ years | The theme didn't interest me. | Just right | The food could have used some help. | I liked how the formats were interesting because of the nature of the theme: it was more participatory, experiential and that was nice. A mix of types of formats is good, since i don't mind coming to the workshop and listening to a presentation either. | I learned a lot from the Royal Roads session. I always enjoy the institutional updates, I think they are my favourite part. | Good! | It would be helpful to have a workshop around strategic planning--eg. for faculty development, ed tech, student development. | not sure yet. | You guys always do a great job!
| 11/7/2011 14:42:01 | This was my first year | It was alright. | Too long | It was alright. | The UBC session and the Evernote session went on too long. With Evernote, it was obvious that the presenters were sold on it and that it is a great tool but the session just went on and on. Started to feel like a sales pitch. I think the UBC session could have accomplished the goals with the initial skit and then the rest of the time could have been used for an engaging discussion. | I enjoyed the updates best. | Great - a bit cold though. | See above - a bunch of 2 or three minute sessions of "this is cool" apps or tools. | Thank you for all the great work the committee did, it showed how much work was done by how well organized it was. Leva and Amanda you are amazing, I didn't hear anyone complain and things just ran like a Swiss Clock :-) Thank you so much!! It was great to network and I really enjoyed that aspect. You had time built into the schedule for that and it was great to see everyone talking and sharing. What a great group of people. | I'm torn between breakout sessions where you have to choose where to go and this format. I would have preferred a bunch of 2 or three minute sessions of "this is cool" apps or tools.
| 11/7/2011 14:58:01 | 5+ years | The theme didn't interest me. | It was alright. | Evernote | Good venue, but not a fan of all-plenary events. | A real focus on professional learning and aspects of quality, design and effectiveness in a educational technology context. Our cousins south of the border are being are facing these challenges but those themes have not yet emerged politically here in Canada. Best we be prepared. | Some really practical how-tos. Like how to remix a piece of open content and relicense it. Or how to create a license and put it on a piece of content. Sounds easy. Try it. | I wasn't a fan of the topic, and I thought it was too cerebral to be meaningful. People travled form around the province for this event. This 2.5-minute video animation was pretty much what the UBC players presented. Wasn't it? http://bit.ly/ieMXfV | Not sure the workshops were very interactive based on what I saw.
| 11/7/2011 15:00:36 | This was my first year | It was alright. | Just right | The food could have used some help. | The whole experience was very pleasant, but having people presenting more technical material would be more useful. | Faculty Development: Mindful Journey or Bad Trip? | Convenient location. | hottest/newest gadgets or technologies that we could use in e-learning. | Showing new tech trends could be more useful.
| 11/7/2011 15:07:05 | 5+ years | It was alright. | Just right | It was alright. | It was fun watching everyone colour. I enjoyed that everyone was able to unplug and be quiet for a few minutes without losing it. There were no outward signs of permanent damage from technology withdrawl. | I liked them all because they were so different from each other. | The room was a good size for the presentations and for networking. | Nothing. It was a great day.
| 11/7/2011 15:10:49 | 5+ years | It was great. Just what I was looking for. | Too long | It was alright. | Lots of variety, engaging sessions. I personally enjoy more small group sessions/interaction. | I liked them all, for different reasons. I really enjoyed the Stillness in Motion session. It set the stage for the day. | It was easy to get to, close to accommodations and restaurant, lots of room to move around the room, nice to be at an institution. | unconference! Feels like we're ready for a change in format. | Different seating arrangement. It was difficult to manage drinks, computer, etc and not ideal for group conversations. It would have been better with tables. It seemed we didn't have as much time for networking, but that might have been because I was out of the room for part of the time.
| 11/7/2011 15:15:38 | 5+ years | It was great. Just what I was looking for. | Just right | It was alright. | i really liked the first session about 'mindfulness'. there was a good variety of presenters & approaches. This was something different but something really needed given our work environments today. Also loved the institutional reports, always valuable. | The location is super-convenient but otherwise the rooms were pretty mundane. Would have been nice to have some tables & also some electrical outlets for recharging technology stuff. | might be nice to hear from the mobile learning projects that are happening around the province
| 11/7/2011 15:15:45 | 2 years | It was great. Just what I was looking for. | Just right | Yummy! | I would prefer more "how to do X" sessions, versus a very broad overview of an upgrade/pilot/etc a group did. Without some clear "to do" items or a list of " things to improve on" I don't find these as valuable. I want to LEARN something, to take something away from a session. | I really enjoyed the first session (in 3 parts) I think we were given some useful tools and food for thought. The discussion afterwards about what people already do, or could do, to use technology for mindful work was great, and the easy method this was all delivered in suited the topic. | The venue was fine. The location and timing with the shared services meeting was convenient. | I don't have specific ideas, sorry. | More on how support is handled at different institutions. (how it's managed, delivered, and if it's tracked) | :) | ?
| 11/7/2011 15:21:37 | 4 years | It was great. Just what I was looking for. | Just right | The food could have used some help. | The Evernote session seemed like it might have been a better fit for the spring workshop where just those who were interested could attend. It was just a little specific for the whole group I think. | The morning meditation, especially the very first session. I loved it! | It felt a bit gymnasiumy, and I prefer the tables format for networking and group activities during sessions. That said, it was nice to not feel so squeezed in as other workshops have... | Just a huge thanks for the workshop to the organizing committee and presenters. I enjoyed it very much!!
| 11/7/2011 15:35:39 | I've attended ALL of them! I am an ETUGGER for LIFE | It was great. Just what I was looking for. | Just right | It was alright.
| 11/7/2011 15:46:43 | 5+ years | The theme didn't interest me. | The food could have used some help. | I think the workshops were ok for certain contexts but the main idea behind ETUG is to get an intensive hands-on ed-tech update. There is so much to talk about and share! I would like to see it get back to practitioners demonstrating and explaining their leading edge practices to the rest of the group. The morning sessions covered important material but could have been done in one short 1/2 hour session. | As mentioned above I would like to see it focused on sharing and improving ed-tech practices in higher ed. | Thanks for the hard work -- I know it's a big job. I would just suggest staying with the roots of what it's about. I saw a lot of people leave after the morning session which is a shame.
| 5+ years | It was great. Just what I was looking for. | Just right | It was alright. | I really appreciate the different twist of techniques for getting reflective/mindful | I liked the theatre exercise (Luisa and Cindy) - it went on a bit too long, but I think it was very illuminating | fine | can help | all good
| 11/8/2011 9:06:10 | This was my first year | It was alright. | Too long | It was alright. | Too wishy washy. I'm not against mindfulness, but I'd like to balance it with something more concrete. The "how to turn off your computer" group support session before the morning break was a little too much like group therapy. | I liked the opening meditation to set the tone for the day. | Good. good light. close to transit. good wifi. | Seminars on interesting technology pilots. Concrete examples of technology in action, hurdles and how to overcome. | • Using Video for teaching and learning • social tools applied to video and other learning objects
| 11/8/2011 9:54:23 | 3 years | It was great. Just what I was looking for. | Just right | Yummy! | The entire morning. It's easy for conferences to do the same old thing of just talking more about what we do everyday. So, it was refreshing to take a different approach that encouraged a more critical look at what we do without just telling people to reflect on their work. | Excellent. Close to public transportation and enough space. | I'd like to see how people are using games, games consoles, handhelds to tackle learning. If a few stations could be set up, it could be a lot of fun and very informative. | The Gamefication of Learning | Thanks. You do a great job!
| 11/8/2011 11:23:31 | This was my first year | It was great. Just what I was looking for. | Just right | It was alright. | I really liked the group work we did during the RRU presentation, so I think a little more opportunity for those kinds of interactions would be great. | I think it was a tie between the Interactive Theatre and the RRU presentation. I liked the scenarios with a chance to mindfully change outcomes - I think doing discussions in small groups about the scenarios would also have been good and given more people (shy like me) a chance to discuss how to change the scene. The RRU is a great project that I want to find out more about and perhaps get involved in... | The venue was good, but cold. | I would like to see more interaction with the website - more pre and post session interactions perhaps, and as a SCETUG member, am of course more than willing to take a lead on this :-) | I don't have any specific ideas off-hand, but I did like the interactive theatre session, so I am thinking that a session around best practices of interacting with various players around course design (sharing experiences, etc.) would be really useful for me. | I just want to thank the organizers for having gluten free pizza at lunch. It was good, and really nice to be included! | Overall I think my experience was very positive.
| 11/8/2011 11:46:28 | This was my first year | It was great. Just what I was looking for. | Just right | It was alright. | One of the workshops was totally focussed on faculty development. Myself on one other person in my foursome has nothing to do with faculty and their development. I suppose choice when it comes to very specific sessions might help. | I really enjoyed the intro session. There were lots of practical and immediately helpful ideas I got out of it. | Good. | Continued updates on new programs, software, application etc. Keep up the great work.
| 11/8/2011 12:01:22 | 3 years | It was great. Just what I was looking for. | Just right | It was alright. | The workshop sessions were alright but the venue was just too big and distracting to get a feel/be involved in the whole thing. Comparing the morning and afternoon sessions, the whole day felt a bit lopsided where the energy was completely drained by the afternoon. More involved sessions would have been preferable. | I loved the first session about being physically mindful of what we do. It was a different kind of session that we need more of. It was unexpected and took us beyond what we were comfortable with. | The venue was great, enough space to walk around and listen to people. As I mentioned before, it was rather too big for a workshop type session just like the ones in the afternoon. | A multi-day ideation process that leads to let's say a plugin or a process, etc. | Sessions on the kinds of skills we need beyond just knowing the technology Some instructional design basics? I'd love to explore the notion of "tweaking" as a way to move forward instead of "inventing" | Leva, we need cookies in the afternoon! | Maybe have the afternoon sessions be divided into smaller groups?
| 11/8/2011 12:14:17 | 5+ years | It was great. Just what I was looking for. | Just right | It was alright. | Networking & reconnecting with colleagues is always valuable. I did feel a bit trapped with only a single stream of sessions. Institutional reports = meh. Would like to have had the Evernote session as a hands-on workshop. Faculty development session was really well done, but not applicable to my situation. Found I didn't have much to contribute as faculty development isn't really my area. | Morning session was great. Nice way to start the conference. I like that all three presenters had a slightly different take on the theme. Discussion at the end about how to remain mindful with our technology was useful. I also liked last session of the day on Mahara as we are looking at a Mahara project. | Felt cavernous & big, especially the mindful & meditation sessions in the AM. Could have used a place more cozy. Location was great - close to hotels and restaurants. Walking distance. Didn't have to arrange transportation. | Try to develop the ETUG website as a place where we can keep these f2f connections going. Perhaps focused synchronous online sessions combined with focus discussions (kind of like like SCOPE) to attract & keep people at the site? | I struggle with the identity of the fall session & what it should be, compared to the 2 day ETUG spring workshop. Sometimes feels like the fall is a bit like a lesser version of the Spring, when maybe it shouldn't be. Perhaps a one day session focused on a single very specific topic instead of different sessions?
| 11/9/2011 9:19:47 | 5+ years | It was great. Just what I was looking for. | Just right | It was alright. | I loved the theme! And, thought all presenters did a good job of carrying the theme through the day & making connections between their session & others. The first session of the day was good because it set the context for mindfulness, but would like to have had a little more depth or work through more practical suggestions. I know that they did do that, but maybe I'm not used to presentation format where I could take notes & note links from a ppt. If the resources all 3 spoke about are made available through some follow-up that would be great. Would be great to check in on this theme next time & see where people are at. ie., Has mindfulness entered your day-to-day more? What changes did you make after the fall workshop? | The theatre one was great, would like to see more interactive stuff like that @ ETUG. Good way for us as educational technologists to work through case studies and explore common issues. The eportfolio session was really good, as was the hands-on Evernote. Great session by RRU on faculty development approaches; would love to see more sessions with this focus, and dig into the planning & budgeting required a little more. | Very handy to Skytrain & other transpo. Nice size venue but too cold in room. | Some kind of follow-up to the fall one would be good. Building community maybe?? | Nothing, it was really good!
| 11/9/2011 10:20:20 | 3 years | It was alright. | Just right | It was alright. | The topic was a bit too touchy-feely for me. I would be looking for more practical topics, pedagogical strategies, that sort of thing. Oh the drawing was fun, but I did not get much out of that. | Evernote and e-portfolios were the best for me. I guess because they were more practical and offered insight into these tools. | It was good. Nice enough room. Lovely building. Chairs were not great but that's pretty minor. Access was easy via skytrain; that's really important. | I've got to think more about that. Online pedagogy is really my thing. | epubs, Kaltura, Moodle | Another successful ETUG workshop! Keep them coming. | Not much.
| 11/9/2011 13:43:15 | 2 years | It was great. Just what I was looking for. | Just right | The food could have used some help. | I'm more of a gadget person, so the Evernote app session was particularly interesting. I also liked RRU's session on how they developed and delivered their matrix of support. | I liked the first session of the day; it was a nice change from the everyday. I wouldn't want this at every eTUG workshop, but it was great for this session. The important thing is that things keep changing! | It was fine, although it would have been better had their been a flat screen instead of a curved one. | I'd like more frequent updates about what other institutes are doing - not only within BC, but perhaps in Canada and Internationally too. Maybe the eTUG.ca website could foster this... wait... the website's lame. Maybe we should get the website working... | How about a tick-toc type of theme where we have tech-type stuff at one workshop and pedagogical-type stuff at another?? | It was great, thanks! | Free cake??
| 11/9/2011 16:05:39 | 2 years | It was alright. | Too long | It was alright. | I was disappointed with the opening session. I think there is a lot of value in meditation and artistic creativity, but I feel I already have access to those activities outside of the conference. Since the ETUG group only meets twice a year and it's an opportunity when 150 of us are all together, I would have preferred a technology session or an activity during which I could interact more with the others in the conference. | Evernote - learned about a new technology tool and heard from other users how it might be useful | The room was cold, but it was very convenient that the location was close to Skytrain.
| 11/10/2011 10:35:20 | 5+ years | It was alright. | Just right | The food could have used some help. | the very first one, the guided meditation, something I could take away with me that was not a web link | a look at e-readers and/or tablets in conjunction with electronic textbooks - is the paper text book a thing of the past? a "shootout" of social network sites - say facebook, google+, myspace - in terms of the usefulness for teaching/learning another look at digital story telling, esp the latest and greatest developing tools
| 11/10/2011 15:11:01 | 3 years | It was great. Just what I was looking for. | Just right | It was alright. | See above | I really enjoyed them all - they were very different and each offered something to think about. The various formats help interest and certainly the morning sessions all encouraged engagement. | Fine - it's nice to see different campuses | Congratulations to everyone involved - it was a big success! | It was great!
| 11/14/2011 9:58:40 | 3 years | It was great. Just what I was looking for. | Just right | It was alright. | The fact that I was encouraged to NOT use technology - instead, just take in what was being presented by being present - was something I needed to be reminded of. Thank you! | The first one/three (they kind of melded together) - refreshing way to start a long day of sessions and a reminder for us all that being mindful and using technology aren't exclusive | Fantastic!
| 11/15/2011 10:38:05 | 2 years | Not my thing. | To be honest, I didn't stay. I had too much work to do and I try to do yoga on my own time. | best practices in educational technology use, sharing of cool apps and tools, showcase of practical applications of technology (invite people to demonstrate a specific use from their institution) | I am all about the practical. Anything hands-on, anything showcasing the use of technology to enhance education | I would have like more focus on technology and education
| 11/16/2011 13:35:12
| 11/28/2011 14:17:33 | 4 years | It was alright. | Too long | The food could have used some help. | I think the theme may have been a little hard to relate to - so some of the presentations lacked some coherence or reference to the theme. | The session about Faculty development. It was great because we had the opportunity to network in small groups. | too cold (physically and psychically). | Themed facilitated discussions. Get ideas for themes from participants in advance and 5 minute showcase opportunities. Sharing of resources/practices - smaller groups, less formal and yes, I would be happy to facilitate a discussion or a session like this. | Documenting practice. How do we document and share our practices so that we can learn from each other? Student-led, institutionally supported projects - what is a student -led project and what opportunities and challenges come with these? (would be a good discussion). | The work that goes in to organizing, being responsive to participants and then publishing results out to the website is SO APPRECIATED! | Nothing you could have done - I appreciate risk taking in terms of some of the presentations and the theme. No one died in the process and we probably learned something valuable that we wouldn't have without that opportunity - so bravo to you!
