Folkways=coming early to practice to talk to friends. mores=not running across the finish line celebrating. sanction=getting athlete of the week. | The most important thing I learned this semester was that different cultures have different rules and that even thought something/someone's culture is different from mine it doesn't mean that it's a "counter culture" or unaccepted by society. | I thought that this was fun. I learned so things about about our school by talking to people and hearing their opinions. everyone has a different opinion and high school expire cow and it was fun to hear about what other people think about our school. | I learned a lot of information about groups or cultures that I thought. knew so much about. this project opens my eyes in regards to certain cultures. it also gave me a chance to dig deeper and examine a culture before assuming that I knew everything about it. | In my opinion everything was covered with your questions
45 | 11/18/2013 12:44:19 | Castro | Sydni | Period 4 | Family- Material = our home, Folkway = respecting each other, Mores = helping out around the house, Sanction (positive) = allowance from doing chores | I learned the different parts that make up a culture and how to pick them apart to learn more about that culture. | I didn't learn much from our culture videos because I attend WHHS. This project is helpful by teaching students how to dig deeper than the surface of a culture. | I already knew a little bit of the subculture I researched, but I was able to learn about the actual history of it.
46 | 11/18/2013 12:43:31 | Chaokasem | Pinky | Period 4 | Going to Thai temples- none material = praying to Buddha, material.= statue of Buddha and other form of Buddha. Folkway = festivals once a year during the month of November , mores= dressing properly, sanction(positive) = meeting others wit the same religion internet as you . | To not judge other culture or someone's way of life because you find out not info about it. After seeing all the different cultures, I am now more open minded and would love to learn about all the cultures in te world. | I learned that our school isn't all that bad, we have a good group of students at west hills. Everyone participates in most of the school activities. But no I would not do this project again. Because even though west hills is a good school and many activities goes on, I don't think It's enough to be done multiple times and our school compare to the other schools, our school is at the very bottom in my opinion. | I learned that there are many different cultures in te world, big or small. Some I never heard of but once I learned about it, it sounded like some of the popular cultures I know and I now know that some cultures relate to each other in some way. I learned a lot from everyone's project because they put a lot of great ideas and facts. | I liked this culture unit a lot. I love learning about others and what they're interested in.
47 | 11/18/2013 12:42:26 | Chavez | Marisa | Period 4 | I believe that I'm actively involved in the folkways and mores of our school. I think having school spirit makes school a much more fun environment. Following the mores of our school like getting to school is important to me because its good to follow the rules of our school. It makes you feel responsible and its just a normal thing most students know to do. | The most interesting was the school culture video project. Seeing other schools in other states and how different they are from our school was really cool. Also just seeing the things the other schools are more into compared to the things our school enjoys was interesting. Some of the other schools aren't really into sports and here at west hills sports are a big part of our school so the comparisons were interesting to see. | I enjoyed doing the culture project video and I definitely think you should do it again. Even though I'm a junior and have been here at west hills for almost 3 years there were some things that I learned more about that I either didn't know before or didnt know very much about. | I learned a lot from the other groups because I got to look at the real facts of other cultures I didn't know much about. Now after learning some of the background knowledge about some of these cultures I look at them differently and with more real facts. Sometimes we may judge a culture or group of people based on what we think we know about them or the labels people place on them. | I think it's a positive thing to have lots of knowledge on culture because we live in a world with lots of diversity from race to religion to culture so it's good to have an understanding of the people around us.
48 | 11/18/2013 12:36:13 | Conway | Chas | Period 4 | I am not currently involved in any type of culture here at west hills | I think it is an interesting concept that we get to share with the entire country on why our school is a great school and see why other schools feel the same way about their schools. | I thought that everyone did a great job on presenting their subcultures/countercultures, and we got to see what some of the students are interested in. | Is the way we created the school culture projects and the subculture/counterculture projects going to be the same for the final project for this semester?

Material: Board games, food and footballs Folkway:playing games or sports. More:praying before eating Sanction(positive): not having to clean up, do dishes etc. | I think the most important thing I learned is that every one has their own views on culture. Watching the west hills culture video it shows that everyone views west hills differently, we all have the same main idea but, people's opinions vary. I think it was interesting that culture shows that everyone has different views on the same idea. | I learned things about the school which I liked, this being my first year at west hills it helped me learn more about the school and what's normal and what's not. And I liked the uniqueness in everybody's video, every one had a different perspective. I liked this project and enjoyed creating the video. I also enjoyed seeing the differences between my old school and west hills | I learned a lot about making the website and I think it helped me to know more about sanctions and folkways and taboos, etc. I personally enjoyed learning more about other peoples projects than my own, and I found some people in the class to have very interesting topics. I didn't learn much from my own personal topic and if I could go back I would change my topic. | I enjoyed the culture unit, I kind of wish we could of talked about our home culture or sport culture, or any extracurricular activities culture and not focused on school so much, other than that I enjoyed this unit.

51 | 11/18/2013 12:46:29 | Gonia | Zachary | Period 4 | My family- non-material= classic music, material= several cars, folkway= clean my room, mores= be home by 10pm, sanction (positive)= get good grades. | The most interesting thing I've learned during this unit were the clowns and crumpers subculture. If I hadn't watched the video and saw these people, I would have a different perspective about their way of life. The film helped explain how they were doing something positive for the community. | The school culture video mostly helped me with learning more skills when it comes to editing. For example when a certain part was not working, I discovered other ways to make it work for me. The project itself was fun besides the fact that technology was difficult to work with at times. Also learning about other schools and their culture was interesting. You should do this project again, but maybe find a more reliable way for editing. | I feel as though some groups did not get as noticed by others. If everyone had to present to the whole class, there would have been more interaction and learning about others subculture/counterculture. | No further thoughts.

It was also interesting to watch the other schools videos and see what their school culture is like and how different or similar it is to ours. | I learned a lot about the topic that I chose because we had to look up information to put on the website. Also I like learning about the topics that other people chose to give me a better perspective. | I don't think anything should be changed because this was a very good unit.

It also let me connect with other friends in the class that i never met before | I learned about how the rave culture is more than just drugs its about having a good time with the people around me and it was all around a good experiance

And being able to create and edit a video was pretty exhilarating. | You should definitely do this project again, because it opened up our eyes to how west hills students are and all of the different things that are special to our school to give us an appreciation for where we learn at! | It was great being able to study the culture of a certain group in life that may not necessarily be viewed as "normal". Digging deeper and taking the time to actually understand the groups and learn why they do the certain things they do was really cool. Especially with my group, we studied a group that attends our very own school so it was great to see all of the interesting things that go in within their culture! | Learning about the krumpers and clowns was really interesting and a fun experience in the class!

I would recommend having future students do this project. | I enjoyed the project I wish I had done a project on my own so that I didn't have to depend on my group. I researched the history of skating and ways that it has changed from a counterculture to subculture with many different subcultures within it. The website design didn't go over to well with my group but I was able to discuss all our information clearly to interested students. | Maybe do less group projects and more individual work.

I learned a lot more about people's groups and how interesting they are.
59 | 11/18/2013 12:43:06 | Lippert | Bri | Period 4 | The most important thing I learned during this unit is that there are a lot of different cultures out there and just because they are different doesn't make them any more weird or crazy then ours. We should learn more about a culture before we judge it or write it off. | This project was cool because we got to see what other schools are like and what makes them special. This wasn't my favorite project just because I'm not the best at video editing, but it definitely helped with my understanding of culture a lot. | I think this was my favorite project so far. I had a lot of fun learning about and trying to understand the beliefs behind my counterculture. It was also really cool to see what other people in the class were passionate about. It was also really easy to tell who in the class actually gave some effort and who didn't, so that was interesting as well. | I really liked this unit and found it really interesting. We talked about some fairly weird and different things which made it really fun. I also thought it was cool that we got to learn about dancing clowns which is unique to say the least :)
60 | 11/19/2013 6:23:15 | Lippert | Bri | Period 4 | My Family- Non-Material=family comes first, Material=sports, Folkways= looking out for each other, Mores=doing our homework, sanctions (positive)= being praised by the people in our family

I think introducing kids to different cultures open our minds a little more and be more flexible with one another. | I think it was fun to expiernce the full event at school and I got to learn many new things within school that I have never noticed before. It was also funny that not many people knew the alma mater (: | I think it was cool to have the students to pick our own topic that we think is interesting in our lives and present it to others to hope find the same interest. Everything that a person presented including my own were very informative | The unit we are learning now is so sad but I love learning about those topics of child neglected and much more because it gives me ideas on how much help I can offer

They have good things and bad things that occur. I really liked learning about all of them. | I learned that overall out school is a really good place. We have lots of things offered here for us and things to do. An maybe other schools unlike west hills dosent have things like that. So we should be proud of our culture at West Hills. | The websites were so cool. Everybody had something different. Thins went from Rastafarians to Ravers. It was crazy cool to see how they worked and how they lived and the things they do on the daily basis.
63 | 11/18/2013 12:40:10 | McCrystal | Brandi | Period 4 | My family non material-religion material- parents folkways-eating dinner at the table mores- phone off at a certain time sanction positive- allowance | The most interesting thing I learned in this unit. Would be learning about how peoples cultures are and how they take things a certain way or do things in a certain matter such as in the movie about the crumpers and clowns and how that was their get away and did those things because they enjoyed them and stayed out of trouble | On the school culture video I learned some things about the teachers that I never had and it have me a better outlook on them. | Those presentations showed me what people were really interested and the amount of time they took on putting the website together . | I enjoyed this unit because it was interesting and gave me more background on the idea of culture.

Non-Material: academics Material: iPods Folkways: dancing Mores: participating in the dances Sanction (positive): compliments | The most interesting thing I learned was that even if you feel like you didn't do as well as you would have wanted to, you still give it your all and push on. | I learned from this video project about how we really take our academics seriously and how clean and precise we want our campus to look for other schools to follow and look up to. It is amazing to see how well we all worked together to make these videos come and alive and show off our school as one, the pack. | My thoughts on these were that we really were intrigued with the idea of learning other cultures and researching them with fascination and questioning them about what they do and why they influenced these specific people to make them a culture. I absolutely loved how well were into the project because some of us really outdid ourselves on some of the websites that we created. | I thought that these were really interesting that we should do more of these kind of things because not only are they teaching us but they are allowing us to use our technological devices and once were given that opportunity we really become focused on our subject and develop new skills on learning and advancing our minds through the help of technology because I wasn't really a computer person but as soon as we did these projects I think my brain was rewired and now I do everything on the computer for all my homework and projects.
65 | 11/18/2013 12:43:14 | Meyer | Sarah | Period 4 | I am involved in the deaf culture. Norms:being surrounded by the dead, clapping but instead raising our hands, signing, touching or tapping on shoulders to get attention. Sanctions: a hangout where all the deaf people get together one day a week and talk. | That their is many different cultures and everyone has their own way of doing stuff. Also not to judge other people based on their culture cause what's normal to me may not be to them. | I thought it showed our school very well and it will give people an idea on what our school is like and how people do things here. | I liked the project very much I even learned a lot about my own culture that I never knew about I also learned other new cultures that I never ever thought would be a culture in someone else's eyes | No
66 | 11/18/2013 12:45:43 | Meyers | Josh | Period 4 | Pop culture Material-video games and movies and toys Non material-watching an playing the video games an movies Folkways - going to big gaming or movie events such like a midnight release Mores-watching new content of the internet Sanction(positive)- getting paid to play and watch new content | I think the most interesting thing I learned in this unit is how subculture formed from culture | I really liked the idea but I think we should of had more time for the vide as in instead of 3 mins we should get 5 min cause there was a lot of cool things I wanted to cover but didn't have enough time to put it in | The presentations where really cool! Especially the ones where you could tell the person was passionate about the topic | I think we should of looked at more cultures around the world and not just in America and gone a little more in depth
67 | 11/18/2013 12:47:11 | Norby | Brynn | Period 4 | St. Andrews Lutheran church Non-Material- Acceptance of everybody no matter race, religion, or sexual preference Material- 2 churches, 8 o clock and 10:45 services are in the chapel and 9:30 "family services are in the Rec center Folkways- Salt is the group for high schoolers that meet on Sunday nights Mores- youth get confirmed in middle school Sanctions- actively involved in the church- you get offered volunteer positions and job positions like working in the nursery(if old enough) Negative sanction- late, no parking spots | I learned about the jug halos way of life and belief which was completely different from what I thought it would be | I think it was hard because west hills doesn't have many taboos, or anything that unique | I learned a lot, like vegans have special shoes that they wear and raves have light shows | I think that it was overall constuctive but maybe we shouldn't use wevideo for the video
68 | 11/18/2013 12:41:25 | Raymond | Rachel | Period 4 | Culture = Phil's BBQ No material- the Phil's way, P.H.I.L.S, the one right way everytime, customer service Material- resteraunt, visors, pins, registers, pig stickers Folkways- dresscode , wearing a visor or hat, hair up Mores- clocking in on time, good secret shopper reviews, Positive- raises, good reviews, pins Negative - out of dress code, being written up, getting fired | One interesting thing I learned about was the different cultures and how they can be many different things. Like sports teams or families or a work environment | I learned that everyone has a different view on the school. Those more interested in academics tended to focus on that. Same with the sports players, they tended to emphasize sports more. I think it should be done again, just so everyone can see how others view the school from a different perspective that may differ from their own | I liked it because we got to see what other kids are interested in. And even if they're not experienced in that area, they can learn. I didn't like making the website, because I think we make waaaaaay too many websites in this class, google hates us | We make too many websites. It makes me sad :(
69 | 11/18/2013 12:41:30 | Reyes | Miguel | Period 4 | I am currently involved in the writing culture and within that I am dabbling in spoken word withing poetry. Some of the non-material culture is involves being passionate and feeling the connection between me and my work. A folkway is staying up late hours or in spoken word rhyming, a more is passion and connection and a sanction is writers block. | the most intresting thing during this unit would have to be designing the site for my subculture it was so intresting to learn about and I learned how to build a website from it. | my thoughts on the video project are all positive, we got to see everyones view of the school we go to and break it down sociologically. And plus being up on the website was a nice plus. | again all positive I learned a great deal of things regarding my own presentation as well was others presentations | I think there is nothing bad to say except having more ways students can do websites or videos, I.e windows movie maker, wix.com
70 | 11/19/2013 12:18:18 | Rickman | Jeremy | Period 4 | Friends Non-material- school first always Material-basketball Folkways-have a guys night out every weekend Mores-do good in school | This girl Danielle and how her lifestyle is so messed up and how it effects her. It makes me feel spoiled to see her outcome of life and how she may never develop normally. I would like to visit a different culture one day it's on my bucket list I hope to visit Hawaii. | Like I said some are really cool but some were weird and some I wanna try like the raving and skateboarding more often or so. | Nope but it was very interesting.

Definitely do this project again. | I learned that sometimes presenting is a little more difficult than you think like I knew everything on my Webster just explaining it to other people was a little harder for me. Some groups did phenomenal with their presentations like Josh Meyers did great explaining his indie games website and so did the people who did spoken word. | I really enjoyed this unit I liked looking at all the different cultures and researching some that I enjoyed
72 | 11/18/2013 12:44:21 | Smith | Erin | Period 4 | Youth Group (Church) - Non-Material: Making God your foundation and moral priority, Material: Dressing modestly, Folkway: Participating in events to set an example for underclassmen, Mores: Having an intimate relationship with God (quiet time)/ participating in making all students comfortable, Sanction: Sometimes prizes you win in raffles/ being recognized in front of others (positive) you're alienated or most often made uncomfortable (negative) | I think the most interesting thing I got to experience this unit was understanding what other High Schools are like. Living in San Diego, we don't have much of an opportunity to see how life is outside of this beautiful area. I remember thinking that indoor schools weren't real and only used in movies. After seeing the school's presentation videos, I kind of realized that those High School stereotypes are pretty accurate. We just aren't living them here. | I think that the majority of projects weren't very interesting due to the lack of freedom many should've been given. Since such strict limitations were placed on the project, I don't think students could fully and accurately represent their schools with the culture they really have. | I think that the majority of students weren't able to express themselves in all they ways they wished they could. Although the topics and presentations were interesting, many students have the inability to use all of the software they're expected to use this year. I think too many of the teachers are trying to integrate too much technology this year and is making these projects more challenging. | I just wish that we could've made it more interesting somehow. Maybe exposing more students to media before expecting so much from them.
73 | 11/18/2013 12:37:51 | Stein | Kylie | Period 4 | My family Non-material- dinner together, look out for yourself, speak English, responsible for your own actions Material- pool, BBQ, garage, office, backyard, family room Folkways- respect, laugh, share, sarcasm, joking Mores- chores, respect, do hw Sanctions- positive: presents for good grades. Negative: grounded | That everybody is different and unique and they all have their own views on life and it's not our place to put judgment on anybody. | It really helped to show us what culture truly is by seeing it occur in real life and having to show it to others. Instead if just notes, we really got a full grasp as to what the components of culture are. You should do it again. | It taught me a lot about other cultures that I thought I knew, but as it turns out, I really didnt know as much about those people as I thought I did. It was very interesting. | It was really fun and cool to look at what makes a culture and how other people are. I felt I learned a lot.
74 | 11/18/2013 12:41:03 | Stephen | Benton | Period 4 | I always go to concerts at Soma for hardcore/ progressive music, a lot of people that go to Soma know each other in a lot of ways so you get a feeling of a friendship with everyone. Many kids will go to a concert wearing merchandise from the band they're there to see that night.
