Being a massive fan of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends when I was younger, a show in which Faust played a major role, I checked it out. 11/21/2012 4:08:25MaleKnow Your Meme's first rendition of their MLP article interested me (it was about Feb. 2011), and after reading that people from 4chan of all places were legitimately entertained by this show I knew I'd probably like it as well. Turns out I was right. My experience has been great! When I first joined I knew that it would take off on the net, even though it wasn't all that popular yet. I knew because the same thing had happened to me with 2 other fandoms as well (Homestuck and Avatar) and I could see the "warning signs," as it were. The oodles of fan creations, the great sense of community, and the commitment to not fighting back against the haters with more hate has all proved to show me a truly amazing interaction with them.WhiteHigh School16-19The term "brony" should only mean that you are a fan of MLP:FiM, nothing more, nothing less. There's a problem that arises when you take a pre-existing term and modify it to your own needs, and the proof as such is evident in the Furry Fandom, where people claim that the term ranges from only the sexual deviants to the other people that include the 13-year-olds that just saw Robin Hood and loved the anthropomorphism. Keeping everything simple and simply creating new terms for the fringe groups is what should be done.
As for the term, I identify with it fine. The name is catchy and easy to pronounce, plus it's easy to remember.

11/21/2012 4:26:35MaleOfficially, I started watching MLP FiM at the beginning of summer 2012. I remember in like January I saw a few seconds of the first episode, but didn't really bother with watching the entire thing.

Anyhow, Friendship is Witchcraft got me interested in the show.
Well, after I commented on a YouTube video saying that I liked the show, I was told to go kill myself by some anonymous Internet person. Now online I say I am just a fan of the show instead of saying I'm a Brony. They are pretty much the same thing, but the haters don't know that! ;)

So that was a first. I was never told to go kill myself ever until I said I was a Brony. Scary.

Besides that, I like the fandom since they create lots of neat fan content. The "cloppers" ruin the fandom for me though. Haters think all Bronies are "cloppers", which gave me another reason why I decided to consider myself as just a fan of the show.

I like how the people working on the show actually chat with the fanbase though. That is awesome! :D

But, yeah. Besides that stuff, I spent countless hours trying to make a good earth pony OC of myself, but didn't succeed. On my iphone my OC's colors are too bright, while on my laptop my OC looks alright. Stupid laptop lighting. :/
WhiteHigh School16-19I don't like the term "Brony" and would rather say I'm just a fan of the show. There are freaky people on the Internet who have created their own messed up definitions on what a Brony is.

I identify myself more as just a fan of MLP FiM, and not exactly as a Brony anymore. I have been bullied enough in real life and don't want to be bullied online by haters of MLP FiM.

11/21/2012 4:29:00MalecuriosityI actually saw the entire first two seasons without even realizing that the brony fandom even existed. i had been going through withdrawals after finishing season two so i decided to do a bit of research on wikipedia to find out when season three would air, that’s when I discovered the fandom. I soon stumbled across Equestria Daily and I was visiting the sight every day, mostly just reading the comics and looking at the artwork, but then I discovered a picture in drawfriend that changed everything. It was an image of a crying Rainbow Dash standing next to a tombstone with a ghost of Pinkie Pie smiling at her, and on the tombstone was written “never stop smiling”. This struck me on a personal level because I had just lost my grandfather a few months beforehand but I didn't give myself time to mourn. So when I saw that image I just burst into tears. I found out that the image inspired a fanfic called Never Stop Smiling, so you can bet your ass that I tracked it down. I literally cried the entire time I was reading it.

Nowadays I reed the fanfics all the time, and I'm also re-watching the first two seasons again but from a brony's perspective. It's definitely a different experience the second time around because now I’m familiar with all the background ponies, and I can appreciate all the Derpy scenes.

I hear about people's experience with the fandom and they tell me that it helped them find somewhere they felt they belonged, or it helped them become comfortable with themselves. For me I already had all that outside the fandom. The reason this fandom means so much to me is because it taught me how to cry, because if you never cry you’re not able to release all those negative emotions, so they just get bottled up and stick with you forever. And when that happens you’re never happy.

So in my own weird way, this fandom helped my find happiness.

When I hear the term 'Brony' now I think of an older fan of MLP (male or female) that has an enlightened attitude, a positive outlook, and is generally fun and open minded. I like the term, though I don't know if I would actively identify with being a Brony. I am a fan of MLP, but I don't know if that qualifies me to be a Brony. 11/21/2012 4:38:42MaleSeveral friends on Twitter shared fanfics and pictures; never had a problem with people watching it but merely found it a curiosity until I was sick on my couch with nothing else to watch. The experience has been overwhelmingly positive; it's allowed me to further identify myself, given me a new love for the animation medium and spurred me to not only go deeper into it but to try out shows and other media outside of FIM, helping me to broaden my perspective and meet even more people, several of which have become great friends.White/Native-AmericanHigh School20-22The term is fine, though I think of it in a very general term: if you like the show, you're a brony, period. However, this definition is not a unanimous one, nor is it clearly defined in the first place, which tends to open up arguments and confusion amongst Bronies and fans that may like or even love the show but abhor the term and refuse to identify oneself as such due to the overzealousness of the vocal minority.Yes - Desktop, Yes - Smart PhoneTV - I have the expanded cable package that includes The Hub, Youtube6/10/2012Nope!Music (metal and hip-hop focus), tabletop role playing and TCGs, retro gaming; major fan of the Avatar/Korra series.College studentPart-Time

11/21/2012 4:43:16MaleMy wife saw a video of the "Art Of The Dress" song and started watching the show early on. I had intended to catch an episode at some point because I'm a fan of Tara Strong, Lauren Faust, and many of the other production staff, but it wasn't really a priority for most of the first season; then I saw "Winter Wrap Up" and was instantly hooked. That the creeps and losers are a small minority compared to the cheerful and enthusiastic fans! I'm a fan artist and meet a lot of other fans at conventions, and almost all of them are just thrilled to have such a cool and fun show they can enjoy and share with others. I am especially impressed with how clearly the community in general has drawn a line between all-ages content and adult-only content like pornography and "grimdark"; in most cartoon fandoms, it's a lot harder to separate adult content from the overall fan experience, but MLP fandom has been very diligent about keeping the two apart. It should be a model for other fandoms.WhiteTrade/Associates Degree/Certificate36-45I don't personally care for the term, as it sounds a little too much like an insecure fratboy trying to make excuses for liking a show meant for little girls. 11/21/2012 4:43:27MaleIt all began when I was surfing the web some Saturday night in July of 2011. I had heard about this MLP thing and I decided: "Alright... Fine. I'll watch an episode and see what it's all about." And, well, the rest is history. I watched the first 2 episodes, then the next 3, then before i knew it I was frequently checking Equestria Daily for my daily fix of Pony news. I've been to both a panel at the anime convention, Ohayocon and the pony-centric convention, Trot-con in Columbus Ohio. I can safely say that the Bronies, being mostly geeks at their cores, are none-too different from other anime, video game or comic book fans. They just happen to like something "for little girls!" Overall, they are pleasant folk who want nothing more than to have a good time. However, the "shippers" are a bit too out there for my tastes. Caucasian Undergrad20-22The term Brony is an interesting term. Much like the term "Otaku" describes an anime fanatic, or a "Whovian" describes a Doctor Who fan, Brony is merely a term for someone who is passionate enough about My Little Pony: FiM to watch it, appreciate it, discuss it, learn from it and defend it when met with those who would blindly accuse it for being something unworthy of praise or dismiss it as not worth looking at.Yes - Laptop, Yes - Smart PhoneYoutube3/5/2012I hope your project does well! 11/21/2012 4:43:36MaleBecause it's a fun and innocent show that never fails to put a smile on my face.Has mostly been in the form of lurking EqD and occasionally visiting some other sites. As with any community, it's had its ups and downs; nothing to notable.

The only thing that I find more prevalent than usual (in my subjective experience, of course) is the amount of content that is being put out by the fans.
High School16-19If we see "brony" merely as a term to describe an older fan of the show there's not much else that can be said about it.

If we look at it as some kind of description for a certain kind of person I'm going to be annoying and state that the concept lacks existence. Every kind of descriptive feature (beyond "fan of MLP") or emotion one might apply to the term just boils down to prejudice - one way or another.

I saw a picture of Celestia and Luna and was intrigued by it and decided to investigate the source. After discovering it was from MLP, I perused some clips on the internet, and then watched the first episode.
Super-ultra-extreme-awesomazing! I really liked the show and all the related internet material at first, but after attending Bronycon, I really felt like I had had a conversion experience. MLP has been like an epiphany for me, because now I can treat everypony from 15-35 as a friend, before to associate with those outside of my close age range was awkward. I have become much more loving and tolerant in general, but especially to the LGBT crowd. It truly is like being a part of a herd.CaucasianUndergrad27-35I guess it is a fan who is engaged in the community in some way, a minimal example would be commenting on the internet.

In contrast, many fans of the show who do not engage in the community do not wish to be referred to as bronies. I understand this when comparing it to say a trekkie versus somepony who simply has watched episodes of Star Trek and liked them.
Yes - Desktop, Yes - Smart PhoneYoutube3/5/2012Despite the exaggerations and lies out there, most bronies are just people who like cartoons. In general, they are very generous, very tolerant, and very respectful of others' opinions and beliefs.

I am ashamed of the portrayal many media outlets have created by always depicting men or women cosplaying who are outside the average age. The average brony usually has hardly any of the toys, if they do it is most likely the little blind bags; the average brony never wears anything more than a Hot Topic / WeLoveFine shirt; the average brony is not some freak that is into bestiality or clopping; the average brony could be any typical college aged kid. I am of the extreme, but I am not the average brony.

11/21/2012 4:44:29MaleMy friend bugged me for days, until I finally caved in and agreed to watch an episode, episode 1.

Thus started an epic adventure and times filled with ponies.
I've been intrigued, excited, happy, sad, and even disgusted throughout my journey in MLP and its fandom.

Music inspired by the show has also inspired me to continue pursuing music. The same applies for art as well.

Fanfiction(or fimfiction, if you will) has been one of my favorite categories of MLP-related fan shtuff, and also my least favorite. Art also holds these titles alongside fimfiction. Why? One word: clop.

Anyway, that aside, I love the enthusiasm and creativity that these people bring into their work, all inspired by My Little Pony. For example, Fallout: Equestria. What a great, inspiring, heartbreaking, adventurous story. It actually got me into the Fallout series. So...pony reached beyond the act of simply more pony: it helped inspire me to expand my horizons.
Asian AmericanHigh School16-19I honestly think of haters. Many people use the word with a negative connotation, unfortunately.

I personally think the term is one to be proud of, because(at least for males), it shows how "manly" we can be as we stand up and take a derogatory name and use it with pride.

11/21/2012 4:45:23MaleBecause I thoroughly enjoyed it and the characters; however I will say I didn't enjoy it the FIRST time I watched it - it was when I discovered the fandom behind it that I actually decided to give it a second try.

The thing I realized is: I'd rather watch it knowing I have many other people enjoying it as much as I do than enjoying it and only keeping it to myself.
The fact that there is so much kindness throughout the fandom - be it the community itself or the many charities it's produced and/or support - is very touching. Everyone is very kind and I haven't had any negative experiences with bronies.

Also, the only thing that "bothers" me about the "dark side" of the fandom is that sometimes they don't keep it private whilst fans who aren't into it - and worst case scenario: children - view the material and become scarred for life.

11/21/2012 5:15:03MaleThe absolute negative ire it gathered on the internet made me wonder really what the deal is with it. One of the things that I heard about MLP fans/bronies is their absolute acceptance, which I identify with. So a month ago I decided "Alright, let me see how it is..."As I only started to follow the show 1 month ago (mid-October 2012) it has been very minimal.
As far as overall impression, the art and music is incredible, and that is why I started following sites such as Equestria Daily, and +watched many of the artists on Deviantart.
Fan-fiction is one of the thing I have thus far not read, and I fear what [Relation]shipping fan-fic may contain.
WhiteUndergrad23-26To better understand my answer you should know that I was born in Hungary and I moved to the US when I was 14. I am 26 now.

In Hungary you have to hide your true self to be as amalgamated as possible, so people don't find weaknesses in you. Hungary is still fairly intolerant of peoples 'oddities'. I grew up with the though that "If I see glaring signs, then I may ask politely and unassumingly." not to disturb or intrude on the person in question.

So, to answer the question: When someone says 'brony' to a person who 'knows' the term and the 'background', people sadly assume the worst, especially on the internet. As such it is 'understood' that it's a bunch of fat creepy young adult who live in their moms houses, watch MLP, make bad fan-fic/porn, and have plushy ponies with Fleshlights in them.

This is why I only partially and cautiously identify with the term, especially when I have thus not met any other MLP fans.
Yes - Desktop, Yes - LaptopYoutube, torrent6/10/2012One of the thing that I am building up courage is to go to a local MLP meet - if it exists in my area - to see what the locals are like. In this age there is an absolute tolerance of a lot of things, however acceptance is still lacking. Just like watching the show, I would give it a chance - or few - to prove that the local community isn't made up of the stereotype.
If they are, well, I have to get past that and get to know the bronies as people. :)

11/21/2012 5:34:18MaleI'd heard about it for some time but didn't really think it would be worth watching. I saw it pop up at one point on Netflix as a recommendation based off other shows I watch; that's when I started considering it. I was a little worried at first, to be honest, as I really didn't know what to expect. Adding to that was that I didn't really trust internet people, the ones that "live" on the internet, and as the popularity seemed to stem from there...I wasn't sure what to think. Long story short, I had a few hours to burn before bed and didn't have anything else to do, so I started watching.I don't interact too much with the fandom. I on occasion will leave a comment on a youtube video for brony music and just recently participated in a live chat for a "mare-thon" stream of the old seasons while waiting for the new episode to premiere. That tends to be extent to which I interact with other fans. I do check Equestria Daily several times a day, watch episode reviews, read articles, and other like things along with checking comments on all this media (sometimes adding a comment myself).

My personal experience with the fandom has been positive. The people in general seem to be nice, fun-loving, and caring and I have to say, it can be refreshing to see this kind of positivity in today's world. There are areas I've discovered on the net (Youtube commenters for example) where so-called Bronies will act in opposition to their "love and tolerance" motto but overall I tend to see that theme championed throughout the various sites I visit.

As a whole, I do think the brony community hold themselves in high regard, elitist if you will, in comparing with other groups or normal human individuals with no allegiance. They do enjoy to pat themselves on the back a little bit too much for my taste. That's not to say that they are not deserving, they do produce some great art, music, fan fiction, games, and so on and accolades should be dispensed, I just wish they practiced being humble a bit more.

Because the brony community is so large at this point, there will be more zealous members that can end up being either obnoxious in trying to "recruit" or simply share their material with others throughout the net or by participating in even more non-standard activities such as pornography (while proudly displaying or announcing this material/facts). Unfortunately, extremists tend to have big mouths so it doesn't take long for what they're spewing (extreme notions) to be taken for the general consensus of the fandom as a whole (see Islam).
WhiteUndergrad27-35Before I was properly introduced to the show and the fandom, I took the term "brony" as what I feel a lot of people do: someone, more than likely a "nerd", who has an unhealthy sexual obsession for cartoon horses from a girl's show. I thought it a specific genre stemming from "furries" - people that are fans of animals, typically anthropomorphic, though specifically there tends to be a sexual focus there too. I feel rather bad for jumping to conclusions so readily, it's just that I don't have a high opinion of internet people.

Now, the term "brony", to me, simply means, "a fan of the show." I think extremists will more readily adopt the term whereas "closet bronies" and others close to that category will try to steer from such a name...obviously.

I understand where the term comes from, bro+pony=brony, and I suppose it fits seeing as the show itself utilizes tons of puns, but me personally, I do not like the term. Right out of the gate, the term "bro" bothers me and in more than one way.

First off, I greatly dislike the popular culture of "the bro" with its emphasis on constantly displaying masculine traits "to show how much of a man you are" along with the type of people that tend to be a part of that culture: usually brainless muscly jerks a la Jersey Shore. It does strike me as funny seeing how by being a fan of a brightly-colored girl's show the fan is going against societal and gender norms, yet the term calls to mind (at least to me) the bro culture. It's as if the original coiners of the term were trying to compensate*.

The second reason I do not like the term is that the "bro" element of brony seems to say that all bronies are male, but that is not the case. I've read arguments from female fans saying that they're bronies and that it's not a gender term. I think that's fine if they accept it so that it's an all-inclusive term, it's just that the origins say otherwise.

In the end, it's the accepted term for a fan of the show, so on the basic level, I do identify with being a brony. I don't really go out of my way to say it, but it is simpler to say it rather than trying to explain.
Yes - DesktopDailyMotion, Youtube, Live Streams3/5/2012I wanted to say thanks for choosing an interesting subject on which to do your anthropology project. Social/urban anthropology is one of my favorite focuses of anthropology. I'm an anthropology major as well, focused in linguistic anthropology, minor in Chinese. I look forward to reading your paper once it's finished!

(*This is an aside. Speaking of compensating, have you noticed how much of a large fanbase Rainbow Dash has? She's the most masculine of the Mane6, with Applejack close behind. My idea is that the reason she tends to be the most popular is that she's the "safe bet": since she has so many masculine traits, guys (males, since that seems to be the dominant sex of the fandom) readily claim her as "best pony" so that they are less emasculated, rather than a pony like Rarity or Fluttershy who tend to exhibit more common feminine characteristics.)

By the time I finished the first season and found that I liked it despite initial hesitations (Male/Female gender stereotypes, Questions about masculinity for liking "girly" things. All that stuff), it was a week before Season 2 premiered and have been watching ever since.
It has been amazing, the amount, variety and quality of content that is produced by the fandom is unbelievable. I'v read fan-fiction that rivals the length of the later Harry Potter novels, listened to studio-quality fan-made music and watched many of the PMV's and other Brony films.
