9121-25/9/2012Audit and update of e-resource records1 Import of previous year's Moodle pages into Interact
2 Log created of resources linked to, Moodle locations, subscription details etc.
3 Upgrade to Shibboleth authentication sought from current providers who offer this route
4 Details of licence, access length etc. sought where not on record"
1 Continued access to resources for all users, with some awareness-building of resources for me
2 Log helped reinforce and structure my resource awareness and establish gaps in coverage
3 Shibboleth gives equality of access for all SNC users, not just those who are physically on-site and use libraries; removal of multiple passwords etc. reduces barriers to use
4 Highlighted that some linked resources were out of licence; informed e-resource budget planning
Follow up on expired licences (after appraising resource and need); restructure and revise imported Moodle content to take advantage of new feature-set; continue to follow up Shibboleth authentication routes1, 5, 7, 9,12Audit document (redact sensitive data)]

9226/9/2012Plagiarism Info Skills sessionFirst solo delivery (after observation of TT delivering material the previous day)!
Familiarised and ran through material prior, but delivery was a very different experience! Went reasonably well, but areas where I need to find an approach which better suits my style. Decent feedback (1.6, 1.6, 1.6, 1.6 - text feedback: well presented information, easy to understand).
Pontificate, innovate, iterate6, 9, 13, 15Feedback forms (shown in year-end report)

There's a crapload more teaching which could be included here, but I'll cover that in a summary of the year's stats from feedback

9419/9/2012Induction Training: Data Protection- Refresher on data protection legislation and requirements of staff re. non-disclosure of information
- New information regarding SNC approach to Data Protection, nominated officers, lines of report for breaches etc.
- Delivered by head of dept.; first proper contact as an employee!
- Data Protection taken seriously by College; not a direct part of my role to enforce, but will likely come up as part of the informationiness of the job

9513/10/2012Library CampLibrary Camp - unconference attended by 100+ library folk (mostly, but not all, young professionals and shambrarians).
4 sessions attended
- Dealing with hostile students session - provided strategies and approaches which I have since used with too many students...
- Disaster management - discussed SNC disaster planning with TT, who confessed that there was nothing in place but multi-site nature aided continuing availability of resources post-flood/fire
- Games in libraries - tied to my interests, but subsequent attempts at using game principles in exercises have fallen flat. [addendum 5/13 - gameshow element in Dewey session was more effective]
- Networking - met with several new people, a few existing acquaintances and some Twitter friend-strangers; engaging discussion abut school/college library practices at lunch
Disaster mgt - medium-term goal for service, esp. post-Hub [new build project bringing several site libraries into single space]
- Games - looking again at gamification of general lib use, and including games in study skills sessions.

9616/10/2012MeetingSLA Meeting: First interaction on a professional level with established team; observed dynamics, listened and noted ongoing discussions about future planning and what had been tried before, contributing where I had examples or ideas from previous practice (NTU rather than book examples - observed hostility to theoretical underpinning to ideas early on). Suggested more regular, non-PDR progress meetings to increase LA-SLA cohesion, which have been patchily implemented.
Briefed SLAs on developments with eResources (shibb etc., what was and wasn't working, trials planned) - awareness raised, but as not necessarily led to rise in usage figures.
Continue to develop areas of responsibility, inc. briefing wider team on developments [e-res update email once a month/half-term];
Build working relationships with those SLAs who I do not currently work alongside much

9716/10/2012TrainingLA PDR trainingTraining on new PDR process for SNC staff; useful in some ways, but not applicable in 2012-13 due to being in probation period and therefore in a separate development-measurement mechanismConsider targets for mid-probation review; offer to support to LAs where appropriate (as non-managing manager, I have a handy semi-official voice?)1Some paperwork

9819/10/2012MeetingSLA & Management meeting: Blue-sky discussion of new-build library (physical environment; services offered). Wide-ranging discussion (SLAs, TT, PW) to condense into briefing paper for LAs and other interested parties. Discussions into bridging the gap between current practice and this hypothetical model began.
Group was joined by JFo, SNC VP for LR, who listened to ideas and briefed on likely developments which may help or hinder this development.
Few practical results from day yet observed due to fanciful and unrealistic aspirations of some of those involved. 'Vision' was interesting, but lacked the intervening steps to reach this goal. Identified need to:
a) demonstrate impact,
b) build alliances with key staff (mgt, teaching etc),
c) make library usage central to effective learner experience at college.
Each of these are difficult for varying reasons. 'Dream' library service needs breaking down to essential, core and desirable features to ensure that minimum requirements will be met in new build.
Nature of new-build project in flux, with plans continually shifting and finances for project uncertain. Some elements of 'visioning' can be applied to existing service/buildings, but essentially must be cost-neutral. Team buy-in is not necessarily guaranteed, as some elements of plans could result in their obselescence.1; 5; 7; 9Briefing document

99Oct-Dec 2012SNC WorkWriting lesson plans and supporting materials for study skills program: based on scheme of work written by SC, which ties learning outcomes to Access groups' CAVA assessment criteria. Timed plan using SNC template (also incorporating consideration of learning styles), considering ECM criteria and EDI concerns and marking resources required for delivery of sessions.Have successfully used each plan on multiple occasions with minor iterative adjustments.
Use of Honey & Mumford learning styles ensured that my personal learning style did not adversely affect the session design, and that a balance of approaches were used. Focus on EDI and ECM are core foci for SNC (esp. in an Ofsted year!), so overt consideration of these ensures that library sessions meet the same standards as other lessons delivered at the college.
Continue to iterate and refine sessions as they are delivered, determining what is more or less effective and tweaking. Review content covered (esp. for online resources) in timely fashion. Liaise with TT before 2013/14 for harmonisation and review.6; 7; 9; 14Sample lesson plan (PART approach)

1017/11/2012EventQUAD LIS Meeting (inc. straw poll for EMBoC): Networking event first and foremost, with no agenda for discussion. Met with several East Mids library people, from academic, school, public and corporate libraries. Discussions included limitations of our various catalogue systems, instructing information skills to people who outrank you in your organisation, doing strategic planning whilst also fighting fires. No concrete outcomes, but it's nice to know you're not alone with these issues! Also conducted quick straw poll about preferences for the location of the 2013 EMBoC AGMSome of the good practice discussed could be applied to VLE and session delivery. Emails were also forwarded to relevant teaching staff where new resources were announced. Effective for raising profile of resources, [addendum 5/13, some spikes in usage around this period, suggesting effective approach]Continue to produce updates when timely, taking into consideration the points I had to clarify for this version.5; 7; 10; 11Email/word version

10328/11/2012DeliveryCPD Day - Systems briefing (Staffnet, Sharepoint, Moodle) to S/LAs - Demoed sources where we give information, their specific focuses, and areas for the Library to develop their online presence. Tied this to SS's focus on branding and marketing.
- Other sessions on the day further aided my familiarisation with library procedures and practices, with a shared lunch aiding team cohesion further.

1045/12/2012EventUKSG eResources event, London. Nationwide attendees, with some good networking with librarians, supplier staff and UKSG people.- UKSG - reviewed mailings and offer for SNC use, but there was not a huge amount appropriate for our current needs
- JISC - eCollections demoed - we had MediaHub linked to, but no active subscription. Pursued trial, then signed up.
- Plagiarism session - alternate viewpoint on 'conventional wisdom', which has crept into my practice (less on consequences, more on benefits)
- Credo - built relationship with Customer Services rep; reviewed several features and issues we were encountering
- EBSCO - Discovery layer was enticing - arranged a demo and review of current resources (see entry 111)
Follow up on resources of interest; remember there is a community who have already done what I'm attempting, and may have OERs etc. to nick!Notes/reporting to TT

10611/12/2012Phone callSafetycare - troubleshooting with video training packageSeveral tech support queries had been made with this company to get their videos to work (DRM issues had caused problems with playing on SNC network). Issues could not be resolved in concert with IT staff. This call was to try a final fix, which worked but could not be feasibly rolled out to network machines without significant impact on other software etc. The software contract was not renewed.None?
