| 1 | marching powder | 51226 | Rusty Young | It is about Bolivia’s San Pedro prison where prisoners have to pay for their own cell, can take drugs and run businesses. Amazing. Again, we see the inequality of people living in different parts of the world.
| 2 | Sky Burial – An eyewitness account of China’s Brutal Crackdown in Tibet | 60605 | Blake Kerr
| 3 | The adventures of Tom Sawyer | 60618 | Mark Twain
| 4 | The life of Birds | 60704 | David Attenborough | Enjoyable book. Nice photographs of the birds. Can be said to be a very reader friendly general science book. Covers aspects of evolution of the birds as well.
| 5 | my life with Chimpanzees | 60827 | Jane Goodall
| 6 | Reason for Hope | 61005 | Jane Goodall

| 9 | No such thing as over-exposure Inside the life and celebrity of Donald Trump | 61231 | Robert Slater
| 10 | In the shadow of man | 70112 | Jane Goodall | This book records her work in Africa studying the chimpanzees
| 11 | The Kite Runner | 70222 | Khaled Hosseini | Good novel set in Afghanistan, learn about their kite flying culture, and their honour culture.
| 12 | Complications – a surgeon’s notes on an imperfect science | 70305 | Atul Gawande | An excellent book by a surgeon on the limits of medicine, tells you many things that doctors don’t know but they still go ahead. Interesting first hand stories. Was covering my mouth in horror as I read.
| 13 | Price of Honour | 70315 | Jan Goodwin | A good book about the plight of Women in muslim countries, especially those in fundamentalist controlled area. Also let us know the background to the Fundamentalist muslim movements and introduce as into the writings of the Koran.
| 14 | 围城 | 70422 | 钱钟书 | A book where the author gives excellent analogy and has a great sense of humour. However, I feel that there is no plot to excite me into continue reading to the end.
| 15 | To kill a mocking bird | 70430 | Harper lee | Worthy book. Story line is engaging but at the same time, she never writes in a obvious manner so you have to think a little before you get it. Totally enjoyed it | again in Feb 2016
| 16 | 易中天品三国 (上) | 705 | 易中天 | From these 2 books, you really come to learn that romance of 3 kingdoms novel is really just a novel. A lot of decisions that seemed to be made from a character point of view, actually had a bigger political background to it. Such as why Zhuge Liang killed Ma Su and why the processsion of no 1 man in Wu went from Zhou Yu, Lu Su ,Lu Meng and Lu xun
| 17 | 易中天品三国 (下) | 706 | 易中天 | |||||||||||||||
| 18 | The world is flat. | 70809 | Thomas Friedman | Awesome book. Introduce to me many of the technological happenings of the wider world out there. Memorable good book.
| 19 | Harry Potter and the Philsopher's Stone | 70810 | JK Rowling
| 20 | Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets | 70812 | JK Rowling
| 21 | Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabab | 70813 | JK Rowling | A better books among the series. A great twist to the end.
| 22 | Harry Potter and the Globet of Fire | 70814 | JK Rowling | Pretty Good book too, quite exciting at the end to see if he can make it or not.
| 23 | Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix | 70828 | JK Rowling | Boring book as in the centre part of the book has a lot of things about the school ( taking OWLs) - that can be deleted and not related the mystery going on. Hahaha
| 24 | 三字经 | 71203 | not as fantastic as I thought that it would be...
| 25 | Winning | 71218 | Jack Welch with Suzy Welch | Great book to pick up to for anyone starting a career, or running a business. His typical no Bullshit style is straight to the point and refreshing. Only lousy chapter is the chapter on six sigma which doesn't really say much. A book worth to keep.
| 26 | From Beirut to Jerusalem | 71223 | Thomas Friedman | A delightful read. In a funny, full of annecdotes manner, Thomas Friedman manages to share with the reader the complex history behind the region: the Muslim Lebanese - Christian Lebanese conflict and the Israeli - Palestinian Conflict.
| 27 | Business: The Richard Branson Way - 10 secrets of the world's best brand builder | 71225 | Des Dearlove | It is interesting to read a third party account of Richard Branson, before that it was just short articles about him and the autobiography. Reading this book, you come to understand more that is not easy to be him. While I may share is sense of adventure and altruism, there is plenty more about him such as being the negoiator.
| 28 | The Tipping Point | 80109 | Malcom Gladwell | Again just like Blink, he equips with very good examples and stories to explain the phenomenon but never succeeds in tell you how to achieve it. Probably because he also does not know. The most valuable lesson that you can bring away in this book, sometimes it is not the most expensive marketing, advertising company that can bring you the sales. It is the small little ways, small budgets ways that can bring a lot such as the team that succeed in the airwalk brand. The lesson for your green movement is that a big budget way is not necessary the way to go but how to make your message sticky. Another valuable message is the 150 people size company/tribe.
| 29 | The Selfish Gene | 80125 | Richard Dawkins | Finally, I read the book that propelled Richard Dawkins to stardom. As one of critics wrote, it is rare to have someone like him to have the patience to explain something so complicated in such a layman manner. At times, I cannot deny that I get mentally lazy to work through with him all his logical reasoning. However, this book does manages to convince that the gene should be the unit of competition in the theory of survial of the fittest, hence being able to explain many phenomemons around us such as kinship. The second last chapter " nice guy finish first" was particularly fun to read , talking about the game theory and prisoners' dilemma.
| 30 | Singapore Samurai | 80130 | Penrod V. Dean | The most interesting part to me was his escape to the forest. For a person who attended Jungle Confidence Course, I don't think I will survive in the forest. It was also very interesting to note that he was perhaps the only person that survived the solidary confinement in prison. Even with food, lack of contact with others can kill. He stayed alive cause he learnt japanese and converse with the guards.
| 31 | Richard Branson - The authorised biography | 80328 | Mick Brown | This book gives a very refreshing account of Richard Branson as compared to Richard Branson's autobiography. This is because Richard Branson's autobiography gives a very light, self promoting account of his ventures. When reading his autobiography, you felt that he just went ahead to do it ( for example of his ballooning adventure.). Upon reading Mick Brown's version, you will come to understand the objections that Richard faced from his family and friends. In this book, you will also come to understand better that how upbringing plays an important part of how everyone turn out to be. For example, for branson, his mom had this motto: "Why watch what others have accomplished? Go out and do something with your life!'". There is more to Branson than his public self.
| 32 | Jack, Straight from the Gut | 80518 | Not as good as his later book "Winning" which summarise his beliefs in a more concise way. However, you get to learn about his past and his childhood which plays a part in his success. Mothers are always important.
| 33 | The Lexus and the Olive tree | 80601 | Thomas Friedman | After reading "The World is Flat", it is not as interesting, but it would have been an interesting read during the SM Goh's period
| 34 | Nehru- The invention of India | 80630 | Shashi Tharoor | A very good book. It is well balanced in the judgement of Nehru, at the same time coupled with lots of fantastic one liners- though some of them are from other books. Perhaps, that is the beauty of this book. It does not claim to have any new information to write this biography, but rather pick up and went through other books on Nehru and synthesis it into a short book like this. Among the one liners include: Pakistan was created by Jinnah's will and Britain's willingness, not by Nehru's willfulness. In the end, the author gave a very good analysis of Nehru's 4 pillars: non- alignment, democratic institution, secular government and socialism development? In the end, I think I learnt more about Nehru from this book then from the book - "The dynasty". I have come to understand India's unique from of racial preference - the minorities are given more priority in schools and jobs.
| 35 | Freakonomics | 80713 | Steven D.Levitt and Stephen J.Dubner | Trival information like Malcom Gladwell's books. Tell you interesting facts but things that you can't really incorporate into your life. Read it like a movie or novel to enjoy and relax. Only thing you can learn is to how to better reward your housing agent so that he/she will get you a better deal. It is a good introduction into using economics and statistics to understand the world around us.
| 36 | Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed | 80730 | Jared Diamond
| 37 | A new green history of the world | 80811 | Clive Ponting | One of key books
| 38 | Communication and the environment | 80828 | Darren Shiau | Personally, I think all environmentalist in Singapore should read this book. Provides a very practical moral guide to being an environmentalist.

| 41 | World's leaders Past and Present: Mao ZeDong | 80925 | Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr | After reading a biography about Mao back in secondary school, I have forgotten a lot about him. This is a very well balanced, succinct biography of Mao.
| 42 | King of the world - Mohammad Ali and the Ring | 81010 | David Remnick | Not that good a read considering that he is a pulitzer prize winner. However, it is still a good guide for people of my generation to learn my Mohammad Ali was such an influential person other than being a mere boxer.

| 48 | One billion customers- lessons from the frontline of doing business in China | 81210 | James McGregor | Awesome book to read as a collection of short stories even if you are not interested in China. Excellent story telling skills. With statements like"if you can't trust your CFO like your mother, give the job to your mother" and "if you fuck the Chinese once, they will fuck you 3 times back. But these people will walk through the wall if you help them", it can't fail to be a colourful read.

| 52 | Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows | 90805 | J K Rowling | Amazing how she manages to link all the scenarios from previous books all in the end. Means she must have been planning much ahead. Interesting how Neville Longbottom transformed too.
| 53 | Angela Ashes | 100325 | Frank McCourt | About his childhood and honestly, you find it rather difficult to believe the extreme poverty that he was going through. The "running on " way he writes about his inner thoughts is also rather amusing.
| 54 | Tis | 100415 | Frank McCourt | About his adulthood, interesting to see how he had to engage his class. Busy with excitment - his code word for screwing around. few scenes stuck in my mind: how as a a soldier he gave up cigarettes to get sex and how non excited the refugee girl was, how she just walk over to a pail after they were done, and emptied his contents. The other thing that stuck in my mind was how he finally got the girl of his life - pretty, well mannered etc but it was just not him to meet her standards of being a well mannered middle class gentlemen.
| 55 | A fine Balance | 100220 | Rohinton Mistry | It was another Indian centric book that reminded me of the poverty of India. It did give me a view of how the Emergency affected normal indians..from what I read back in the Dynasty..
| 56 | Eleven Minutes | 100210 | Paulo Ceollno | I expected more from the author after hearing about his " The Alchemist" . Okay, interesting way to look at sexuality . That's about it

| 60 | The last lecture | 100610 | Randy Pausch | read it while stealing the book from June. Some quotes: U may have causes, goals and interests. Are they even worth pursuing?I know u are smart. If someone tells you they need to go USA to study what the universities are doing over there for sustainability, ask them to read this book first.Moving from A primarily vertical (command and control) value -creation to an increasingly horizontal (connect and collaborate) creation model. Committing to a revitalized, more democratic process - one that involves all stakeholders in decision making and fully informs them of the inherent trade offs - is crucial to the success of the sustainability effort. 80 | 76 | Goh Keng Swee: A Portrait | Ms Tan Siok Sun | GOH practices what he preaches. He has a tremendous zest for work, a gift for concentration and the ability to apply his mind to a variety of subjects quickly and smoothly—"like a man switching high pressure taps off and on" as a journalist once said. Yet he maintains throughout a sense of humor and proportion. Like many of his colleagues, GOH is a combination of "British training and Chinese reserve." He is a great reader of Chinese history, especially military. Many people think that GOH is the man who made the prosperity and that when he calls on youth to produce "people with keen minds, able to see beyond the routine and the ordinary to perceive the big opportunities ahead, and to think out bold, imaginative yet practical plans and carry these out successfully," he is unwittingly describing himself.

| 83 | Bonk:The Curious Coupling of science and sex | 121030 | Mary Roach | A present from Jaga after we talked on about the Jared Diamon's Book" Why is sex fun". However, this gets more into the details rather than the evolutionary reasons behind the sex. Only one interesting and useful sex: Sex physiologist Roy Levin - sperm which sits around the factory for a week or more start to develop abnomaliitites: Missing heads, extra heads. All which makes them less effective in banging their way into an egg. Hence, here is an evolutionary strategy of masturbation . However, daily masturbation would deplete the number of sperm per ejaculate. Holding time of 5 days would be good to produce quality and quantity. And the last ounce of ejaculation contains spermicide - to kill the spem of the rival after him.

| 89 | The mysterious Stranger | 121104 | Mark Twain | 1. Are you so unobservant as not to have found out that sanity and happiness are an impossible combination? No sane man can be happy, for to him life is real, and he sees what a fearful thing it is. Only the mad can be happy, and not many of those. The few that imagine themselves kings or gods are happy, the rest are no happier than the sane. Of course, no man is entirely in his right mind at any time 2. a God who could make good children as easily as bad, yet preferred to make bad ones; who could have made every one of them happy, yet never made a single happy one; who made them prize their bitter life, yet stingily cut it short; who gave his angels eternal happiness unearned, yet required his other children to earn it; who gave his angels painless lives, yet cursed his other children with biting miseries and maladies of mind and body; who mouths justice and invented hell--mouths mercy and invented hell--mouths Golden Rules, and forgiveness multiplied by seventy times seven, and invented hell; who mouths morals to other people and has none himself; who frowns upon crimes, yet commits them all; who created man without invitation, then tries to shuffle the responsibility for man's acts upon man, instead of honorably placing it where it belongs, upon himself; and finally, with altogether divine obtuseness, invites this poor, abused slave to worship him!
| 90 | Steve Jobs | 121105 | Walter Isaccson | I probably feel less of a need to copy notes for this book because I owe this book. Main takeaways: 1. This is a unique biography as it is authorised, therefore the author got access to many friends and data. But yet, Steve Jobs chose not to read it in the end, at hence, it probably didn't get censured. 2. Reading this book at the same time as the Power of LESS, it is reinforced again and again that Less but better. Simplicity IS the ultimate sophistication and 3. Impute. There is also an interesting episode whereby Steve Jobs demands no more than 3 steps to get to anything in the Ipod. It is the same with Jack Ma and Ali baba website - It must be simple.
| 91 | Road Less Travelled | 121106 | M.Scott Peck | Life is difficult, the faster you acknowledge that, the less it ceases to be pain. And a complete dedication to reality is the way to grow. Science may be the way to measure the world, but science itself is coming into paradoxes, hence maybe engagement is the way for science towards things like miracles - instead of against.
