Parents and community don't understand the need to changeTraining opportunitiesTime, Financing, Too many initiatives, Teachers out of the classroom too muchT as facilitator - sitting with small groups, not just up front - asking Qs - maybe can't find T - T is not the sole source of knowledge
STs doing all of the work - collaborative conversations, solving problems, researching info, arguing, backing up solutions, blogging back to Ts about essential concept/skill
When T does the work is a time shift - more prep up front to relinquish control later
Ts presenting problems instead of objectives - not just Core standards on the board - a different way to get the solution
T is responding to ST answers
Critical dialogue b/W Ts and STs, also STs to STs
STs working at own pace or on different topics/projects
STs taking responsibility - not looking to T for answers - STs know where they're headed or are trying to head in right direction
STs are trying to make up a plan on how to achieve objective
STs identifying info they need to solve the problem
Problem/project ID might emanate from either ST or T
Problems STs are trying to solve are messy - ill-defined, not proscribed up front
T may have a defined framework up front and knows where STs need to go
Close attention to what STs are engaged in - just b/c using tech does not mean it's deeper learning work - the tool does not define engagement
HS class is trying to help revive Main Street in local community - working with local Chamber, other communities that have done this - maybe an online Main Street - STs writing and conveying thoughts, reading nonfiction texts, solving real problems
Election is very timely - STs figuring out what they believe, their role in society - STs are taking debatable issues, how was this resolved in another country - how do taxes impact economic growth - how does this impact local community - how do you decide what you're interested in
A focus on the conceptual, not just the factual
Do STs have ability to make change, have ethics, business skills - core values, not just conceptual
Products: debate with other classes, presentations, videoconferencing across communities, TV commercial, brochure
STs decide what is the best way to demonstrate their learning - more choice in how
Maybe Friday folder contains reflections - where did ST start, end up, and what did they work on during the way
Having STs tackle relevant topics - e.g., should school year be extended - what would be the costs - interviews, cost-benefit analyses, presentations to the community and school board, policy briefs
Motivated STaff and students who love to learn, Administrative team that promotes these opportunitiesOur staff is evolvingnow is the time to change
