2 | War in the Air Group A | Being shot down Undetected aircrafts Enemy troops could be spotted by airplanes in the sky Aircrafts were limited by fuel capacity Scouts Many countries had few aircrafts Kite balloons could be easily shot down Planes weren't very strong Pilots had insufficient training Airfields changed daily Strategies were nonexistent | Scouting Bombing Size and agility of planes Only Germany had an aircraft force, thus innovating the field of battle Artillery planes Gas-filled "kite" balloons Moranne-Saulnier (a bulletproof deflector on planes) The Fokker and the Albatross had technology where the guns would stop when the propeller was in front of them Germans developed the "circus system" (flying in formation) | Generals, at the beginning of the war, thought planes were redundant and at the end of the war they thought they were key in strategic plans Proved an aircraft's strengths In 1918 the British Royal Air Force was created because they believed in the planes British and French squadrons combined to attack the Germans after the Spring Offensive The new strategy was to defeat the enemy by destroying the country rather than through battle | Half of all of the British pilots suffered casualties 50,000 airmen were killed Since Britain had never had war on their own land, the public went into panic during the first air raids (the public experienced shell shock) Germans being bombed decreased morale as well as made the economy suffer due to the increased airplane production | A | It went from land and sea to sky. It created a new generation of weaponry and fear. Opened up a new sector of warfare (airforce) Cultural impact- increased interest in planes. THe introduction of airplanes have evolved to the use of military weapons such as drones in modern warfare. | Yes, and no. We have developed upon travel through land, sky and sea, and everything after evolved from that. However we are introducing drones, and new technology yearly into the military. The last front for warfare is Space, and attacking other countries through that, which could be through shortening the technology of the enemy country. | The plane. The bullet-proof deflectors. The tactics that were created and since improved upon and based upon in modern warfare. The technology that allowed planes to fly and shoot bullets at the same time. | After the British and the French attacked the Germans after the Spring offensive, it decreased Germany's morale. There was a race, similar to the race to the moon, to have an Air Force and have the best one, that continued to WWII. It changed perspective of war on land, and changed the battle field to the sky. Remnants of air warfare from WWI still exist now, like the Red Baron. Airplanes were not a game changer for WWI, but it changed the aftereffects of the war and the perspective of airplanes and use.
3 | War in the Air Group B | -There were one thousand on each side before the war broke out -Airplanes were just used for reconnaissance, not fighting -Any parts that came off were sucked into the propeller -Between all nations, 77% of all aircrafts made were destroyed -France was the first country to have a functioning airforce with liscensed fliers. -It used to be a crime to shoot at other planes when they were used for on reconnaissance | -New planes were developed (fighters, sea planes, and bombers) -Long-range bombing and use of Aircraft carriers pioneered -Long range communication -Fokker invented the timing chain, M.5 most feared aircraft | -Arial observation of the battlefield -Strategic bombing (bombing targets such as factories) -Planes gave support to the ground troops | -Revived the "chivalry" of fighting, pilots were seen as the "knights of the air" -British pilots had a 50% chance of casualties. Their life expectancy was 17.5 flying hours | B | Airplanes were used to scout enemy movement and attack enemy ground troops. It also opened up a new type of fighting, in the air. There was another option to trench warfare which helped move the war along | I believe that we may be able to advance the technology that we have to a point where we will minimalize human casualties on our side. It could be possible to reach space for warfare. | Mounting machine guns on the airplanes. Planes could shoot each other down and shoot at ground troops instead of just doing reconnaissance. Also, as speed improved and developed the planes were more and more effective, and this technological advancement was important in the war. | Instead of a stand off with trench warfare airplanes got things going. They could get rid of trenches, tactically bomb enemy factories, and move supplies faster than trains. The war could have lasted a lot longer if they did not make air forces.
