9/4/20133It's been a while since I've been back at the office. Soon I'll be quite busy with college applications as well as schlarships, but I want to make it my goal to come in at least three hours a week, if not more. Today, since I'd been gone for a bit, I didn't do too much. I got the chance to talk to some of the staff members and they made some reccomendations to what colleges they think might suit me. 16.5

9/18/20133The questbridge scholarship deadline is drawing near and I still have a lot to finish. My mentor reccomends that I don't put it off any longer. Anyways, today I made some calls because there is going to be a meeting for all Uncommon Good senior members (a check up on our applications and application essays). Also, I sent out a mass email regarding the subject as well as physical letters to go in the mail. 19.5

9/25/20133Today I was able to talk to Nancy Mintie (the founder of Uncommon Good ). We discussed how she got into altruistic work. Didn't do too much office work, just a couple of housekeeping things such as restocking. Also got to water the plants. I always look forward to that. 22.5

10/2/20133Today I went to Pomona college with my mentor to sort some things out. Uncommon Good has very good relations with the Claremont Colleges. A branch of Uncommon Good is dedicated to partnering Claremont college students with young impressionable members (mostly underprivileged Latino students from 4th grade to 8th grade) of the Uncommon Good program. Both parties benefit. The college students earn whatever hours they may need and/or extraciriccular points, and the Uncommon Good members gain a guide and a friend. 25.5

10/16/20132.5Fortunately, I was given the opportunity of working with the resident gardeners/farm workers (for Uncommon Good's farm program). We did several maintanance tasks on the grounds surrounding the office. I was grateful that my mentor allowed me to do this instead of officework because I am very tired mentally and physical labor provided a good release. 28

10/25/20135Today, Uncommon Good, in partnership with Claremont McKenna College, hosted a haloween party for the younger members of Uncommon Good. I helped set up, manage, and tear down. 37

10/26/20138Today Uncommon Good went on a College Tour to the University of Redlands. We were able to talk to resident students and ask questions freely. I might consider applying here. This is my mentor's alma mater. It has been a very busy week. I've done mentorship for four days straight now! Finally done with the Questbridge scholarship. I'm exhausted and can't wait to go to sleep. 45

11/6/20133After a longish break, I'm back to office work. One thing I like about the Uncommon Good office is that it provides a very relaxed environment. Over the summer, I did an internship with CEDG (Claremont Environmental Design Group) and although I did get to work with architectural blueprints, the environment was more focused and ridgid. I think this has to do with the office's actual layout as well as the people with which I was working with. Curiosly enough, CEDG is the firm that planned and oversaw the construction of the Uncommon Good office. 48

11/13/20133Today I got to talk to the newest staff member Rebecca Gifford. She recently became part of the Uncommon Good family when a spot opened up after a long time empolyee left for another job out of state. She comes from an altruistic background and has spent many years in the field. She shares many views with Nancy Mintie. In our conversation, I found her intensity the most interesting. She's been doing this type of work for years, yet she hasn't lost any interest. Years from now, I want to find myself in that same situation; having a career which I continue to be passionate about regardless of the passage of time. (Note to self: possible interviewee). 51

12/4/20133It's getting to be that time of year again! Christmas and New Years are on their way! Usual office stuff. Phone calls, emails, etc. Although I do hold a great admiration for those in the nonprofit sector, I really don't see myself doing office work for the rest of my life. I'd love to partake in altruistic work out in the field. 54

12/14/20134.5Although the winter holidays are still a few weeks away, I've decided to come back next year. This is my last day volunteering with Uncommon Good this year. Today, Uncommon Good hosted a traditional Mexican "posada"(a nativity recreation) at Claremont's Presbyterian Church. I was there to set up and tear down, and regrettably, I was also in the play. 58.5

Since most of these students are young and "irresponsible," several different ways of communication are used when a meeting is coming up), sent letters, and sent emails.71.5Independent Compontent 2

3/15/20144.5It was a pretty busy day. Made calls (as usual) but more than usual because recently more students joined the program. Afterwards, I helped the guys from the farm program uderstand some instrucions left by one of the office employees (the farm program guys speak very little english). Then, I cross referenced the contact info of a bunch of new students (new to the program) and input it all into a spreadsheet.
