| Ready 4 Baby List | ||||||
| |||||||
| Item | Description | |||||
| For the Hospital - Baby Bag | A few newborn diapers | The hospital will provide you with about a days or two worth (8-12 diapers per day)
| Wipes | Get a small travel container - Huggies or Pampers - either is great
| Vaseline | A small travel tube
| Change of clothes | Pick out baby's going home outfit! Don't forget a little hat
| For the Hospital - Mommy Bag | Comfy clothes | You will likely be in a hospital gown for the first bit, but after it's nice to have comfy clothes to wear. Be sure they are easy for breast feeding. Even though it is depressing, bring maternity clothes or very stretchy regular size clothes as you will not fit into your normal clothes for at least a couple weeks (or more like a couple months!!)
| Nursing Bras | Comfy ones that you can wear through the night
| Maxi pads | The hospital will provide you with about a days worth but then you are on your own. Buy lots and be sure they are heavy duty
| Nursing Pads | Disposable ones are good for when your milk first comes in and you are leaking all the time - Lansinoh and Gerber are good brands
| Lansinoh Cream | For use on sore and cracked nipples - it is good to start using this on your nipples for a month before baby is born
| Underwear | Bring a few pairs (6-8 or more depending on how long your stay is in the hospital) of underwear that you don't care about
| Socks/ slippers | Again a pair you can part with
| For the Nursery | Change Table | Anything at the right height will do (a dresser as an example) - no need to get sucked in on buying expensive baby furniture. A dresser is great b/c it has lots of space to hold clothes and other accessories.
| Crib & Bedding | You may not use this in the beginning, but it's fun to have the nursery set up! Buy extra crib sheets as bedding sets tend to only have 1 in them. Kooshies has some soft ones in neutral colours. It's also good to buy a waterproof mattress pad to protect the mattress from accidents
| Rocker / Glider | Get one that is very comfortable and rocks easily - you will spend a lot of time in it!
| Nursing Pillow | Optional - but nice to have as you spend a lot of time nursing. There is a great brand called Boppy
| Monitor | Depending on how large your living space is, a monitor that has two receivers is good for using on different floors
| Bassinet | Can use a bassinet or a Moses basket is also a good option b/c you can carry it to different parts of the house and is good for taking with you for baby to sleep in at another house. Whatever option you choose, you will need to buy a fitted sheet for
| Diaper Genie and refills | Yet another ugly white contraption but it helps contain the stink!
| Laundry Hamper | Buy a good sized one as baby generates a lot of laundry!!
| For the Change Table | Newborn diapers | Huggies has a great starter set that comes with newborn wipes
| Change table pad | The curved pads are good to help prevent baby from rolling
| Change table pad cover | Buy at least 2 as accidents tend to happen when air hits the baby's bottom! Make sure they fit the pad you buy. I also bought a little quilted square that was wipeable (approx 12"x12") to keep on the change pad - it's far easier to wipe this off when there is a mess than change the whole change pad cover
| Wash Cloths | Keep thin washcloths at the change table to dry off baby's bum after using wipes in order to prevent diaper rash. Use thicker ones for wiping up spit-up and eventually using to wash their face when they start eating solid foods
| Box of Wipes | The boxes where you can buy refills are the most cost-effective
| Vaseline | Get the large tub - this is the only thing that needs to be next to baby's skin in the first months
| Diaper rash creams/ barrier creams | Penatene or Desitin are good for small rashes, Triple Paste is the best for heavy-duty rashes
| Baby Essentials | Burp Cloths | Can use cloth diapers, receiving blankets or you can buy actual burp clothes which are curved well to sit on your shoulder
| Soap | Use two-in-one shampoo/ body wash - Dove is good and smells great.
| Body Lotion | J&J Body Lotion is good. Apply after bath/ shower
| Brush & comb set | Use a brush in the bath with soap on it in baby's hair to prevent cradle cap
| "Medical" set | Comes in a package - thermometer, nail clippers, dropper, syringe, nasal bulb suction, etc.)
| Rubbing Alcohol | To keep the cord area clean in the first weeks - apply after every diaper change
| Q-Tips | To apply rubbing alcohol to the cord area
| Tempra or Tylenol | Important to have around when baby gets first shots - a pre-emptive strike of Tempra/Tylenol before the shot works well!
| Pacifiers | Avent has newborn pacifiers. Use depending on your strategy on introducing pacifiers
| Bottles and Sterilizer | If you intend on either pumping or using formula, buy a bottle Starter set. Avent makes a great bottle sterilizer that can be used in the microwave - it also comes with a few bottles.
| Breast Pump | Avent is good - use so that Dad can feed baby too or so that Mom and Dad can go out!
| Clothing etc. | Sleepers | Buy 6 - 8 of the 0-3 month sleepers as this is mostly what baby wears in the beginning. Carter's is a great source if you live in or visit the U.S.
| Onesies | The little shirts that snap at the bottom - great for summer when it's hot, or for winter as baby wears these under everything to keep warm. Buy a package of 5 - again, Carter's is a great source
| Outfits | You will want a few outfits to put baby in when he/she is not in sleepers - don't buy too many as people tend to give clothing as gifts and baby will grow out of the 0-3 month size very quickly. Carter's, Old Navy or Gap Outlets are great sources
| Hats | Have 2-3 on hand, especially if you have a winter baby
| Socks | Buy a couple pairs as you need to keep baby's feet warm!
| Bibs | For either spit up or bottle feeding
| Outerwear | Depending on what time of year baby is born - if winter baby, a fleece snuggly is great b/c it keeps their hands and feet bundled
| Bath towel and wash cloth | The hooded bath towels are really cute and good for keeping baby warm after the bath
| Receiving blankets | Get 2-3 good thick ones (the Gap has nice ones) and a few (4-6) thinner ones (Kushies are nice - they come in two packs). Don't buy too many as people tend to give as gifts
| Stroller Blanket | Warmer, larger blanket (fleece or wool) that can be used in the stroller or over the car seat - only buy 1 as people also tend to give as gifts
| Other | Diaper Bag | No need to buy an actual diaper bag - any bag will do as long as it has some pockets. You can buy a change pad (Kooshies are good) that has a waterproof side that can be carried in any bag.
| Car Seat | Graco is a good infant bucket seat as it can be used in a car separate from the base (good for grandparents taking baby!)
| Stroller | We bought a larger stroller for walking from the house with and a smaller umbrella stroller that holds the car seat for use in the car or travelling
| Bouncy/ Vibrating chair | Some babies love the vibrating motion. Good to use when you're sitting down to dinner - if your lucky you'll be able to eat with both hands for at least 15 minutes!
| Bath Tub | This is optional - you can easily use either your own bath tub or even the kitchen sink. However, it's nice to have a tub at counter height in the beginning b/c baby is so small and slippery!
| Fisher Price Aquarium | Attachs to the side of the crib - magic in helping soothe baby and put them to sleep
| Sling | Good if you have a colicy baby or a small baby as you can't use the Baby Bjorn until they are 8 lbs
| Baby Bjorn | Great for soothing and for taking long walks
| Gymini | Playmat with arches where toys hang from - great for first 4-5 months until baby is sitting up. Also folds up well for easy storage
| Pack n' Play | For travelling or using as a play pen. Needs a separate fitted sheet - Kushies makes one
| Jolly Jumper | Great for keeping baby occupied - also good for small spaces as it takes up very little room - no rush to buy as they can't use it until they are 3 months (or can hold head up)
| Exersaucer | Jokingly called "the wheel of neglect" - great place for baby to play while you are doing other things - no rush to buy this as well b/c they can't use until 3 months
| High Chair | Don't need for awhile as baby won't use it until he/she starts eating solid foods at 5-6 months
| Mild laundry soap | Ivory Snow is a good option and Fleecy dryer sheets
