6
Notes -1) During my trip to Jakubany in Aug. 2003, I was told that there were 4 cemeteries that were used at one time.
7
a) A cemetery in the woods, south of Jakubany that was within a couple blocks of the old iron ore furnace
8
on the east of the road, just west of the main center road and had no markers.
9
b) An old Jewish cemetery located in the central east foothills of Jakubany. I found about 11 stones
10
some of which were worn smooth and some had what looked like hebrew writings on them.
11
c) An older cemetery on the grounds of where the school is now, people were buried on top of each other
12
and there are no markers because they were removed by the German occupation in WW2.
13
d) The main cemetery in use is northeast of the church off the main road. It has a center path
14
and there are now 31 rows to the left of the center path and 32 rows on the right - this info is below.
15
2) In an effort to help you find the grave of a deceased relation, I will provide a reference number for each
16
grave. L or R will stand for Left or Right of the center path; the next 2 digits will be the row number from
17
the front, and the next 2 digits will be the # grave from the center path in that row. Hence L0402 is the 2nd
18
grave in the 4th row in the Left section of/from the center path. A 'B' or 'F' notation next to the plot number
19
indicates Back or Front grave on the same row as these were usually grave sites of small children or babies.
20
3) Many gravestones have husband and wife on them and others are a double plot with 2 stones, one for each
21
spouse. Some couple plots show birth info but no death info (designated by a line _____ below). This
22
could mean the person is still living or it wasn't added when they died - consult the Death Records file.
23
4) The first name given below will be the husband's surname if a family plot, or the woman's surname
24
if a single plot. The wife's maiden/rodina (family) name will be given if shown on the gravestone.
25
5) For the sake of space and name familiarity, the -ova suffix on female surnames will be dropped. Otherwise,
26
the name will be shown unchanged from the marker. The spelling of some surnames will be different than
27
those found in the church records. Diacritical marks on the letters will be left off. For example, in Macuga
28
& Bucko, the 'short vowel marking' is over the "c" which, written in pre-1969 church records, was Macsuga.
29
6) In a husband/wife plot, there is no need to show the married name of the wife if her maiden name is given. If
30
not given, I will just show a line "____" to indicate her married name. The husband's name will be shown first.
31
7) Rows in the left (of center) section after the center mark are not clearly aligned, but I have
32
attempted to put the gravestones out there in some kind of row order. Some rows do not
33
have gravestones next to the center path so the first gravestone may be indented in quite a bit.
34
8) The cemetery was transcribed for the most part on August 27, 2003 by me and rows 5-10 in the right section
35
were completed July 22, 2004.
36
9) Occasionally, there will be a question mark next to a date and this will usually be because either:
37
a) The number was not clear on the marker as part of it may have withered away, or
38
b) The mo of birth/death in the date is sometimes written using roman numerals (RN) or real numbers
39
and as such it is not always easy to recognize whether the mo. II is 11 for November or RN 2 for Feb.
40
10) I have noticed that the birth date is not always correct when compared to the church birth dates on
41
the baptism records. Sometimes it seems that the baptism date is used as the birth date.
42
11) The various markers were wooden or metal crosses and gravestones. The markings were engravings
43
in stone, on small metal plates, and 1 1/2 inch plastic letters that usually withered away after awhile.
44
12) Reference numbers that have "in" after them indicate that the first gravestone on that row is indented, that is,
45
not located immediately next to (left of) the center path.
46
13) The open space in the cemetery tends to be in the left section from row 13 to 29 and many stones are
47
'indented.' Many of these stones are not located next to each other as there is just land between them
48
and few defined plots. Hence the reference numbers of the gravestones in rows 14-29 below are subject
49
to change as time goes on and more people are buried in these rows between the stones marked below.
50
14) In August 2005, I walked thru the entire cemetery and wrote down about 200 changes to the previous file.
51
In July 2008, I walked through the cemetery mainly looking for new arrivals who had died in the last few years.
52
15) The table below is sorted by Ref # (row and plot). The table that follows (line 995) is sorted by family name.
53
16) During my 2010 visit to the cemetery, the church has used my Ref # system below and have created 2 large
54
posters in glass cases near the cemetery front gate displaying a name index by surname referencing where
55
the gravestone is located and a poster showing all the plots in the cemetery.
