Women's suffrage: international historical data
2
3
Women's suffrage is given a rating, a number between 0 and 2 (inclusive). 0 = absolutely no rights for women; 1= full right to vote but no right to candidacy; 2 = fully equal rights. The exact choice of value within these boundaries is somewhat subjective, but should if possible be fairly standard. The choice depends on what fraction of the country is affected, and how complete the rights are. Non democratic countries should be given a rating of 0. If possible, values should reflect the state of affairs in both a de facto and de jure sense.
4
The 'Historical data' sheet contains a record of changes in the suffrage rating. Each modern day coutry should have one or more entries in the historical record. Any historical events should be recorded once for each modern day country in which the event occurred. For example, events in the British Raj are recorded under both India and Pakistan. Events that are important in the history of suffrage, but did not create immediate changes can be recorded with a rating change value of 0.

Set the value in the red cell below to the year in history that concerns you. This value controls the data displayed in the 'State Suffrage Rating' sheet and the 'Map' chart.

Please list errors below...I'm sure there are plenty with varying degrees of potential to cause offence. I apologise in advance.

Eventually I would like to produce an animation showing the world map over the last 200 years. But first I'd like someone else to check and improve the data. Please use the area below to comment. You can also make your own copy of this document to edit (via the File menu).

T Cook21/04/2015Getting a "requested map does not exist error" on the 'map' tab (is this perhaps because, as Google informs me, this spreadsheet has recently been upgraded to the new Google Sheets?)

matthew@xereeto.co.ukThe map suggests that women do not have the right to candidacy in Iceland in 2016 - this is patently false; Iceland was the first country in the world to elect a female leader and is frequently lauded as one of the most gender equal countries.
