1/12/2011 Oakland2$1001+DarraghThe best aspects of the Darragh apartments is the responsiveness of the landlord and maintenance. Every request I've made has been dealt with within a day or two and emergencies are responded to within a half hour (even on the weekends and evenings). Darragh is new and well maintained with decent appliances. A washer and dryer in the apartment was a huge plus for me too. As for the cons, the design for all the apartments is terrible and there is a great deal of inefficient and wasted space in the apartments making them feel cramped. Walls are a little thin and neighbor arguments/aerobic exercise/loud singing can usually be heard.Darragh Street and Terrace Street1521311+http://www.ocl.pitt.edu/apartments/darragh.html5No

1/12/2011 Oakland1$0-$500Meyers Management These rooms are HUGE! Three people can fit into a 1 bedroom comfortably (which makes rent like <300 a person) though ideal for two people. The building next door (which is managed by the same company) is also very nice and has two bedrooms and smaller one bedrooms (the rent is slightly higher though). Ideal distance away from school -- 20-min walk, Pitt shuttle, or public bus routes. Plus, lots of restaurants right down the street on Craig! I lived here all through undergrad and loved it so much that I decided to stay on for med school! N Craig and Bayard 1521311+5Unknown

1/12/2011 Oakland1$801-$900DarraghRent is high but the convenience of being a block from the school is great. The apartments are new and clean. You have a dishwasher, a washer and a dryer in your unit, which is really great.
Walls are very thin so I can hear my dentist student neighbors when they are partying (which is sometimes the day before we have an exam). Some apartments have really bad views (I look at another wall and window).

1/12/2011 Oakland1$601-$700LobosAvoid lobos property. They do not fix anything that breaks for months. I have had no heat all winter and they keep saying they will come out to fix it and they never do. They also have electric heaters installed in their units which are super expensive and inefficient (compared to normal gas force air heat, with electric heat you don't even get a thermostat). I have never talked to anyone that has lived in a lobos property and had anything positive to say about it. Save yourself the time, money, and hassle and go somewhere else. 1/12/2011 ShadysideStudio$601-$700Mozart Management412-682-7000The landlord is a large management company, which has its pros and cons. Requests for services may take some time to complete, the lengthy and detailed rental contract was intimidating, and the initial rental application fees are unavoidable. However, they have a great website (very helpful for apartment hunting at-a-distance - that is, over the internet), are available to tenants by phone 24/7, and their rental office is open during business hours, 7 days a week. They have also approved larger-scale requests for me, such as refinishing my hardwood floors, which a smaller company or private landlord might have been hesistant to do. Regarding the apartment itself, I'm quite satisfied. It has exactly what I need for one person, nothing more, nothing less.5th Ave and Shady Ave1523211+http://www.mozartrents.com4Unknown

1/13/2011 Oakland1$701-$800Darragh412-624-9900Pluses: Living in Darragh is super convenient. <5 min walk to Scaife, Oakland hospitals (Presby/Monte/WPIC). Apts are small (style A is more like a studio), but all utilities are covered, including standard cable and internet. Best perk is personal washer and dryer in unit. Property Management generally pretty responsive to tenant needs.
Minuses: expensive parking ($85/month), small living space for the price.

1/13/2011 Oakland2$501-$600Darragh412-624-9900The convenience of location and a utilities-included rent are hard to beat. The apartments are only a few years old and still in good shape. Maintenance issues are very quickly taken care of - you can submit an online form and many times the issue is fixed the next day. I believe there's an online application to submit through the Off-Campus Living website, but most people that I know who live in Darragh were persistent in calling the office to ask about openings. 1/13/2011 Other2$0-$500Al MeyersMy fiance and I live in a 2 bedroom bilevel apartment that's approximately 1100 square feet on the Mexican War Streets (a Victorian house district on the Northside of Pittsburgh). Our rent is extremely cheap and this is an up and coming neighborhood with a mix of singles and families. We live a block away from the bar that was just rated as having Pittsburgh's best bartender (Monterey Pub) and have a park and several buses within a block at our disposal. The nice thing about living on the Northside and commuting to Oakland is that you're going against traffic aside from the Steelers games, so the commute is fast! We wanted to live near downtown without downtown prices and have more of a city feel than some of the more traditional neighborhoods (i.e. Shadyside, Squirrel Hill). Our landlord is extremely responsive and lives down the street. There are also a few other apartment buildings on our street with landlords as neighbors that are also great people. I'd highly recommend the Northside.Resaca and North Ave152124-105No

1/13/2011 Squirrel Hill South2$501-$600Mozart ManagementBuilding is old and has weird walls and ugly paint that you're not allowed to paint over. Old radiator heaters are SUPER HOT during the winter (we sleep with our windows open and just a thin sheet!). If you don't have a corner unit, you get no cross breeze and it's pretty hot in the summer and you're pretty much running the A/C all day. But you don't pay for gas so other than rent, you're only paying for electricity. You can pay an extra $50 or so for a parking spot in the garage but we have no problems with street parking usually (except for snowmaggedon). 1/14/2011 Shadyside3$601-$700Kenmawr ApartmentsLiving at the Kenmawr is almost stress free, but the price is higher than the market. If you share a place with someone else, then expenses can be reduced. What you get for the money is worth it. The maintenance is very prompt with on-site people. Doormen handle package deliveries. That's great for online shopping when you don't have time to go to the malls. The big bonus is that the heat is part of the rent. So having the place at 80 in the middle of winter is part of the norm. Even if I turn off the heat, the apartment is still heated by the floors above and below. The building is eight stories tall with about 200 units. I live on the 6th floor and have nice city views. Be careful about choosing an apartment facing the west. I have been told that you will have beautiful sunsets, but pay for it during the summer. Underground parking is extra. Valet parking is included in that fee. Free parking is available on the streets, but not always close. The building is within easy walking distance to several bus lines. When going to campus, you need to select a line and wait for that one bus. But when returning home, you can pick any of the several buses and return quickly. Two large churches next door add to the scenery. The building is within walking distance to a Giant Eagle, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. The shops on Walnut are 10-minutes away by foot. Target is opening up also in the neighborhood. I have a family. And the building is family friendly with many other people having small kids. For single people, this does not mean that the building is noisy. The building attracts graduates and professionals including medical residents. So the building is quiet in general.Shady & Walnut1520611+http://www.kenmawrapartments.com/5Yes

1/18/2011 Point Breeze3$0-$500John Zitelli/Zitelli Properties412.242.0895John is fantastic. When moving in, both our fridge and dryer needed replacement and he did it super quickly, with a promptness that is rare of landlords. There was also a leak into our the downstairs neighbor's unit and John got in and out to fix it ASAP before my roommates even moved in so it disturbed the fewest number of people possible. He was very accimodating of my not being able to sign the lease in PGH until move-in day and very straightforward about what he wants from his tenants. He's a straight shooter and really emphasizes making your rental a home not just the place you live. I would live in ANY place that Zitelli Properties manages bc it's a smaller, family-owned and operated company and they really do a fantastic job managing their rentals. Complete satisfaction, and the rent is totally cheap to boot. The main drawback is that living in Point Breeze can be a bit isolating if you don't have a car to get around to social events and sometimes the bus can be unreliable. That said, I hear gripes about the bus everywhere (even Shadyside-overcrowding during rush hours) and if you have a car, Point Breeze is a fantastic neighborhood to live in. 2/19/2011 Shadyside1$701-$800CA PropertiesI love my apartment and will have lived in it for two years by the time I graduate, and I actually took over the lease of a 2009 grad who had lived in it during all four of his years at Pitt Med. It's incredibly spacious and a great price for the location, size, and it comes with a designated off-streak parking spot. A lot of bus lines stop right at my corner which is also incredibly convenient. CA Properties has been fantastic -- they are super quick to respond to issues that I've had (plumbing, heating, etc) which is nice because my building is sort of old and has had a couple quirks. 2/19/2011 OaklandStudio$601-$700Sterling Land Company412-682-5000The building I live in is called the Royal York and I'm really happy with the landlord, building, price, etc. It is clean, the staff are all very, very kind, and the building is within walking distance to the medical school/hospitals/Pitt's main campus. There is a shuttle to the medical school about a block away for rainy/snowy days. The building is older so be aware that you'll need a window AC if you want air conditioning, but otherwise most everything is newly renovated (kitchen, bathroom).Bigelow Blvd and N. 2/19/2011 Shadyside2$0-$500Gerry O'Hare412-372-5585These guys are a small, laid-back operation; several brothers run the company. They are reasonably responsive. They are handymen and take care of most issues themselves--which is mostly good, but sometimes you think, "Hmm, why don't they hire a professional to do that?"
The location is great.
Note that the price per person (above) does not include any utilities. My wife and I live here. Rent is $900/month; utilities are another ~$200. It has a parking space in the back, which is important in this neighborhood.

2/19/2011 Squirrel Hill South2$0-$500PrivateOur rent is $800 for 2 people in a spacious 2-bedroom with a garage a couple blocks from Schenley Park. Squirrel Hill is a great neighborhood with everything you could possibly want within walking distance (grocery store, banks, dry cleaners, post office, liquor store, coffee shops).

We found it through word of mouth, but there are lots of similar properties (ours is a duplex) I've seen on Craigslist, etc., that are owned by private individuals and rented out. I'm biased, but there's no reason to live in Oakland or Darragh and pay crazy prices with the cheap, awesome housing stock and great neighborhoods all over Pittsburgh unless you absolutely need to be next to the medical school 24/7.

The appliances and floors are all recently replaced and in good shape. The Mozart responsiveness to maintenance issues has been phenomenal for me - I call up in the morning with an issue and by the time I return home at night it has been fixed and there is a note on my table explaining what they did. There is also off-street parking available both in a lot and in garages for an extra fee. The only down sides are the street noise (I would avoid an apartment that faces the street) and that the buses to Oakland run less often than in Squirrel Hill or Shadyside. They also don't allow subletting your apartment.Penn Avenue & North Braddock Avenue1520811+http://mozartrents.com4No

2/19/2011 Oakland1$701-$800Meyers Management412-682-5886The apartment building is called Melwood Manor and it's located at 250 Melwood Ave. 20 min walk to get to med school and Pitt bus picks up around corner. 1 bedroom apartments have nice size family room and bed room. Kitchen is small, no dishwasher so get use to washing your own dishes. Street has many other student apartment buildings so pretty safe environment. No central air so need some type of window or portable AC for summer time. No problems with management yet, fix things in a timely manner, maintenance guys are easy to get along with. Close to CVS, Subway, pizza places, barber shop, and other stuff so there's lot of things close by. Has off street parking garage for a fee. Been there 3 years and don't really have any negatives besides needing an AC unit and that the kitchen is kinda small with no dishwasher. Hope this review helps. He owns the buildings in a small complex on Meade Street that my fiance and I have lived for nearly two years now. John gave us no hassle for pets, not even a deposit. He has responded to all of our requests/problems promptly, including putting on a whole new section of roof when we had a water leak, replacing our dishwasher, and allowing us to paint our apartment without any stipulation for painting it back. We found him through craigslist and then just had him show us more apartments that he had available. We got a two bedroom, two-story (2nd and third floors) of a 3-story building for $850 + gas/electric. There is also street and lot parking. I would recommend Costello Properties.Meade St & N Linden Ave152084-10NA4Yes

2/20/2011 Oakland1$0-$500Saad IbrahimThis landlord has been tricking students for years into giving him a non-refundable "downpayment" before they sign the actual lease. I have successfully sued this individual to get my downpayment back which he withheld from me after denying me a room to live in (which he had previously promised me). However, this process took an entire semester, the stress of which I could have done without.

Other students have had misfortunes with him too. Check out more ratings at http://www.landorslum.com/landlords/ibrahim-saad-m

2/21/2011 Shadyside1$801-$900Meyers ManagementOverall excellent management company. They have been really quick at repairing any problems, building manager (Mike) is a really nice guy, management is always respectful, and they are letting me sign my lease 2 months after the lease renewal deadline because I am still unsure as to whether or not I will move out (I want to move to a bigger place). If I am to move, I will definitely try to stay within Meyers. The only problem I've had so far is with my carpet. It's pretty old and I asked for it to be replaced when I first moved in but they refused and said that it was still in acceptable condition. The single best thing about Meyers is the flexibility of the management. I lived in a Union Real Estate building my first year at Pitt and they were a real pain in the ass when it came to moving in and out. All I needed was an extra day to move out but they wouldn't have any of it--I had to do EXACTLY what was written in the unrealistic contract, no exceptions. Speaking of contracts, the Meyers contract is just as strict and unforgivable (they are not responsible for anything that happens), but the management people have so far been pretty flexible with offering reasonable exceptions.Ellsworth & Negley1523211+4No

3/2/2011 Shadyside1$601-$700Trends Capital412 444 6677Don't make the mistake of renting from this company. Everything I was told when I applied for the apartment was a complete lie down to what utility bills I was responsible for. I had insufficient heat all winter (never really above 60 degrees) - when I complained they told me I was lying. Only when the health department intervened did anything happen. Their solution at that point was to cover my windows with plastic. I've had a flooded/leaking bathroom since the first months of my lease and my dishwasher has never worked. 3/2/2011 Shadyside2$0-$500Arbors Management724-733-1565Apartment is in a great location in Shadyside, right on the 500 bus line to Oakland. Parking lot if you have a car, but not all units in building come with a parking spot (if that's the case, there's streetside parking all around the building, though you may need a cheap parking permit for some spots). Building (The Highwood) contains mostly condos that are owned by occupants, but there are also a few apartments for rent. It is a historic building built in the '20s which comes with it's quirks (poor electrical wiring, creaky wooden floors, finicky plumbing) but has the advantage of steam heat that you don't pay for during the winter. No A/C for the summer but window units will keep units reasonably cool. Storage areas in the basement. Communal laundry room in basement, but availability is rarely a problem. Secure building in a safe part of town. Arbors Management can be slow to respond to complaints about repairs or other apartment issues, but they do get taken care of without much fuss eventually.S.
