What is LTI?

Learning Tools Interoperability

LTI stands for Learning Tools Interoperability

Its a standard developed by IMS Global Learning Consortium
Method of integrating tools from third-party vendors into different Learning management systems

The key to understanding LTI tools is recognizing how it differs from plugins.

While they both aim to have similar user goals, in that they add or extend features and functionality in moodle, their implementations are different.
A plugin installation requires the plugin source code to be placed in a specific directory in moodle, meaning all activity and data are saved and preserved within that moodle instance…
And for an institution like ours that self hosts our instance of moodle, this means we need to not just maintain the Moodle code but the plugin code as well
But an LTI tool on the other hand, lives on its own external site hosted and maintained by the tool provider and passes information back and forth to moodle (whether it be a resource or grades)
