BASIC INFORMATIONS

Guy Fawkes or Bonfire Night

The gunpowder plot was a plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament during the State Opening on 5th November 1605, killing King James I and lots of other people.

The leader of the group who wanted to kill the King was a man called Robert Catesby. Robert didn't like that King James I was a Protestant.

The plan failed because King James saw a letter warning Lord Monteagle (a friend of one of the plotters) to ‘stay away from Parliament’ on the 5th November.

Guy Fawkes was arrested in the cellar of the House of Lords, guarding barrels of gunpowder,.

The 5th November is now known as Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night in England. People celebrate this as the day King James I and his ministers survived the plot.

After 1859 although it was no longer a law people still celebrated by lighting bonfires and setting off fireworks.

On November 5th every year the failed Gunpowder Plot is still celebrated with bonfires, effigies of Guy Fawkes and fireworks across England.

Guy Fawkes did not like King James I. They had different religions and King James wanted everyone to worship God in the same way as him. If they didn’t, they had to pay lots of money or even go to prison.

In Great Britain, Bonfire Night is associated with the tradition of celebrating the failure of Guy Fawkes' actions on 5 November 1605.

A Catholic man called Robert Catesby made a plot to kill the King and asked other men to help him.

One of the men was called Guy Fawkes.

November 5th is GUY FAWKES DAY in Britain.

On this day, in 1605, Guy Fawkes tried to kill King James i by putting a bomb underthe Houses of Parliament. However,the secret plan failed and he and his friends were caught and killed. The british remember this event with fireworks and bonfires on which the figure of a man is burned. The guy is made out of straw ,old clothes and newspapers.
